Interior Capacity Decal
 

I have a 1995 Baja Outlaw 24, my boat does not have the capacity decal inside the cockpit. Is there a way to get one? I was asked by the marine officers where the decal was last year. I would appreciate any feedback...maybe I don't need one.

Good question I don't have one either. However I have never had it questioned since I never have more that 5 people the boat.

The 272 has a yacht certification palque that takes its place. Haven't been in a 24 OL, do you have the plaque?

It was only my girlfriend and I when I was asked. I haven't seen a plaque like you described.

My understanding is that not all boats are required to have them. I was told that manufacturers that produce less than X number per year weren't required to have them but that some manufacturers still put stickers in to placate the WP but they didn't actually mean anything. Not sure if that's accurate or if it would apply to you but a thought. A call to a Baja rep or someone that was a Baja rep should clear that up.

A side note, I know for a fact that not all boats have them so that obviously means they're not required for all boats...

Thanks for the replies, I figured with all the changes at BAJA finding information on a 1995 would be difficult but, that may be an option to try.

I would contact the US Coast Guard they would be best suited to tell you if it's required by law or not and where to get one if it is.

According to 33 C.F.R. PART 183—BOATS AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT, Subpart B—Display of Capacity Information, § 183.21 Applicability (Last Revised as of July 1, 2000), you do NOT need one.

Mine doesn't have one either and was concerned. That's good hard facts. Good to know. My last boat had decal that stated it would haul 8, but you couldn't fit but five!

Yep, you can't argue with the CFR's.

A Lot of manufacturers will provide a capacity plate on boats much larger, but it is not required on anything over 20'.

NMMA certification requires builders to provide a plate up to 26' feet, but that's an industry rule, not a FED regulation.

That being the case you actually don't want one. It's much easier to tell them it's not required and point to the code than be over what it states and then argue it doesn't matter. I found it funny that my wake board boat had a sticker in it that specified it's max weight in the boat was less than it would hold in factory ballast :) I never took the sticker out because it also said we were good to like 14 people so it wasn't a liability except for the odd time but if it has said max 8 people it would have been gone day one.

I read up lastnight and came away with; no boats over 20' require that capacity notice and boats over 26' have the yacht certification plaque. SO looks like the 24OL falls right in the crack.

My 29 Outlaw had one. I took it out. It was ugly.
