Baja Islander help! Fuel Injection or Carb?

Hey guys, let me start off by saying Hi, and love the site. Been looking for a while, but decided I need to go ahead and register.
So I bought a 97 Islander 208. Has the stock 7.4 with Bravo one. It has the Holley Projection D system on it. I am having some problems with it. 1. It surges while cruising about 3K, but gets better at WOT.
2. After returning to Neutral it idles high, and then tries to stahl.
This system is only tuned by a module that has jet changes, and idle setting. I am not new to injection as I run a FAST XFi kit on our drag car. This stuff seems to be out dated. Do you guys think if I just switch intakes and put a carb on it, that I would lose any power? Also has anyone run the EFI electric pump with a return style regulator to get PSI down around 4-6 for the carb? reason is the stock pump is gone.
I am really tired of the system, but if I could get it tuned I didn't know if it was worth it. Oh and sorry for the book.
Thanks

Michael

JMO...but carbed is way easier to maintain, diagnose and work on. I run a holley red fuel pump to an edelbrock 750cfm. I could probably go to an 850cfm but the price was so cheap new I couldn't refuse it. These pumps are factory set for 5psi. I also run psi gauge to confirm this.
I presume you've checked all the filters and holley jets w/your current setup?

Hey man thanks, Yea all the injectors and filters look good. I was thinking the same thing about the carb as well. Yea the red pump would be a good choice. Didn't even consider that. What is a good intake to match up to the 750. I have the 454 with Round ports. I was thinking Edelbrock Air gap with 750 double pumper.
Thanks again!

i have some of the parts for a factory 7.4 mpi set up that would bolt on lower intake upper intake i think i have the injectors also maybe even some of the wiring harness i hate carbs for me the injection is easier to work on but i did have issues with my boat last year with the injection my fuel pressure regulator was bad and gave me fits most of the summer just becuase i was sure my problem was timing LOL

Holley pro-jection is the worst crap that was EVER sold, it doesn't look at speed/density, air flow, map, maf -NOTHING, so it runs blind off whatever you tell it to do, might as well be a carb. I turned a set of exhaust valves on a small block into conversation pieces years ago with one. Install a carb and sell that crap to a enemy, Smitty

Well this is what I was thinking. Because it is tuned by a box and it says in the manual you are tuning by ear. Well not in those words but it says to achieve smoothest idle and higest speed. That doesn't work for me. I tried to download the tuning software and then I find out the D system can't even be tuned from it. Oh well guess it will be carb time then.
Thanks for the offer Ed, but I think I will just go the old fashioned route this time.
What Cam would you guys think would be good with this? I plan on doing the intake, and carb the same time.
