searching for 292 Islander

Wife threw me a curve ball in my search for a catdeck that might keep me in the Baja family...

Looking for a 292 Islander with single 496 Mag HO and B3 drive to check out. Yes, I know they're pigs but I like the small cuddy for my 2yr old to get out of the sun and the ride at the Ozarks would be better than the catdecks I've been lusting for.

Price... should be about $50-55k or less with trailer. Anything over $60k and I'll just buy a Magic/Conquest catdeck with a 525/XR setup like we've been looking at.

Look into something like this instead. Much better for the LOTO. A 292 with a single 496 won't be cheap on gas, since you'll have to push it hard all the time just to get moving. It won't have a good resale either comes time to sell. The 33 is a very popular boat, rides great, is very safe and because of the twins you can always get home. It will keep its value much better than a single 292.

I'll bet you anything in a million years that you will be happier with a 33 over time and you'll end up tired of the 292 and selling it before you know it.

Sorry, not trying to put a stick in the wheel, I'm just saying there are other options.

I totally agree. Unfortunately, my wife doesn't. She wants a big open bow or deck boat so we can take all of our friends/kids with us. Another limiting factor is that my truck is rated to 8,100lbs. We've talked about upgrading our tow vehicle but its a 2007 and paid for so I'm hesitant.

Edit: its worth mentioning that we are trailer boaters. One weekend a month I'm at LOTO and the others we are at Shelbyville or Carlyle lakes.

I was going to mention that additional 30-60g's on a tow vehicle on FB.
I know how much your trying to compromise with your wife, I would just take your time and keep watching for winter deals.
Your major factor has always been performance, you will be kicking yourself in the azz over time with that boat.

What about an Envision? They made big bow riders & seem to be popular at loto

I would seriously look into upgrading tha truck. There are so many nice boats out there you could choose from. Get a 1 ton diesel dually and be done with it. Then you can pretty much buy anything below 42' or so. It really sounds like you guys want two very different things. If you did indeed upgrade your truck, a fun bowrider would be this one.

http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o41944-en.html

Also, a 292 with a ˝ton is not exactly the best, I know it's rated for it, but still. The 292 loaded on the trailer will be about 7500lbs. Think about the safety of you and the family.

All in all, if you guys don't upgrade the truck, then go with the 525XR deck cat or something like this. It's actually a bit lighter than the 292.http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o42049-en.html
The 292 is as you said, a pig and you WILL take an unnessesary money loss on it over time.

That one I posted on BBO is a steal at 39k and I'm sure owner is willing to bargain.

No offense to anyone who has one but I'm not a fan of Envision styling.

A lot of food for thought in your post. I'll bring it up to her to consider.

I appreciate the offer but it's the layout (cuddie, sink, fridge, etc), 24* deadrise, and size that made me agree to the 292 Islander. She loves the 277 Islander but I'd rather have the catdeck.

One year ago, I was checking out 30-36' Spectre cats for the next boat. After this season, I've realized our need for a lot more cockpit space and agreed with my wife we need to be able to take our friends AND their kids along. Right now is pretty much "crunch time" for us to find a boat before spring. She also wants to be able to pull a tube and I really don't ever want to but she'll get her way on that once again. Two weekends from now if I can't find someone to check this out for me or find a recommended surveyor, I'm driving down to check this out in person. Honestly, its what I consider our perfect compromise and I'll be VERY happy with it.

The more I think about it, it seems like a new wife would be simpler and make things easier :lolhit:

I'm calling Kelly's and Hawkeye tomorrow about both. Wondering what kind and how much for the trailer they said they have that's available...

Plowtownmissile 11-13-2011 09:03 PM

This summer we were trying to work out a 3-way trade (me, RedBud, and the boats owner) on this boat when he was asking $130k for it. My wife told me to make a maximum offer of $80k, my Outlaw, and they pay shipping. Got counter offered $90k and my Outlaw.

Hawkeye is only an hour away from my place. If you decide to look at it let me know. I'll roll with ya.

I was speaking with a friend last night who has a 292 496HO w/ the B3. He was considering downsizing so if you’re still interested in this boat shoot me an email [email protected] .

Sounds good. Waiting for Kelly's and Hawkeye to call back with word from the 292 Islanders owners if they're willing to work a deal with my boat as partial trade. I'll keep you updated.

BTW, we're kid-free that weekend :drink:

Very nice! Congrats. You tow it with the Tundra yet?

Plowtownmissile 12-08-2011 04:26 PM

Not yet. It got out of the glass shop today for the gelcoat touch ups and it came out great. I'll be pulling the Outlaw down and the Islander back Wednesday morning. A little nervous but I should be ok.

BajaDan 12-09-2011 09:40 AM

Beautiful boat! I really like the split sunpad with the walk way down the middle. Let us know how your family likes the offset bow compartment. I looked hard at a 242 with that arrangement before we bought the 252. It will either be great or be awkward.

Congratulations!

Dan

It manhandled the boat. The pull home was smooth enough I was ready to fall asleep lol

Thanks Dan. Actually the wife didn't want a 288 Sunny MCOB due to everyone having to walk through the cabin to get to the front so I know she's happy about the offset walkway already.
