Thanks XT... Yep, notice that and of all the OL's it is the only one that IMO seems loose in the ass as well no matter how many I've driven.
WwW it was 2002 when they raised them on the twins and went to 4 blades. |
Thanks for the info guys!

i have another question. my buddy is looking at possibly trading for a 290 this weekend which has brought up some questions. the 290 has a 21 degree dead rise and 9 foot beam, was that a boat made from a clean slate or another hull mold revamped? it doesnt seem to share its geometry with the rest of the bajas.

Xt,
Great history...keep it alive! On the 91' (?) 260 hull you had was it stock motor, what wheel ya run? Im testing a few and having issues (in prop section) with slip. Do you think the Mirage prop is not as good as the mirage plus even if it has added cupping? You try the rev 4 on it? |
XT-I have a '93 260 that I bought in '98. It has held up very well. What was the thinking when they decided to put a 21* deadrise bottom on them instead of the 24* on most of the other boats? Also, do you have any brochures on 260s? Thanks.

Only because the 97' 29 Outlaw was the first one designed from a clean sheet and even though it was a big hit at Chicago's IMTEC boat show many of the Baja dealers stated they would rather have the new Outlaws look more like modern versions of the 32 and 24 Outlaw. I think there were renderings done of the 97' 36 Outlaw that looked like a larger 29! We designed more models in 97' & 98' than in any other period of Baja's history.
As far as the twist that you mention I think it is because only on the 302/29 the chine beam on them is narrower at mid boat than at the transom. Any other Baja model they run parallel until mid boat. Have you ever noticed on your 29 if you put it in a hard turn about 30-40 it feels like it flops over on its side harder than it should and if you do this at higher speeds it is possible for it to flop over then stand back level before leaning over again. |

You have to remember the this boat was to replace the good selling Baja 235 Force in 1990 that had a 20 degree bottom, therefore the shallow 21 degree. The 270 was the 24 degree model of the time. I think it was the 21 or 23 Mirage. The Plus always helped on a Baja hull and I would not be afraid to try a 21 Rev. on that hull, but never had the chance. X-dim is too deep for a Bravo1. IMO

Hi XT.! You just Hi-light my 'little scarry moment' of the season..!. I have a 1999 29ol single engine 454 genIV 490hp dyno. I was racing a friend 1990 38scarab with stock 454 we have about same top speed (+-60mph). While going there was a big cruiser in front of us, I angle to jump his wave and slow speed down to 50mph. The river is not wide so right after jumping the wave I turn hard left and in the same time back off a little throttle for not' scarring the passagers'. Well it doest work like plan..!!! The boat bank left real hard, so much that there was barely a inch of hull clear at the rear seats before water get in,,, and the nose tip was flat even with the water...!!!! What the **** happening!!!:cartman: I 'II back on throttle idmediatlly and turn right. It come straight with ease,,, but girls behind where welling for there life..!!! I sure we where close to a 80degre angle... Know I understand the reason why we have lean so much.... Thanks for this great info... I like to ask you something else. I have remove the hook's in front of the tabs and that have give me a 2-3mph (wot60mph) and faster acceleration. Do you know if a 8ìnch jack stern will give me a little more speed?? I like the single engine. I can cruise at 20mph with friends with cruiser's and open bow. I can also go 'fast' with speedboats and taking waves. And the fuel comsumption is great with +- 2.5mpg. Now If I could gain a little more speed and closing to 65mph it will be great!!!

Few of them at LOTO.

A few weeks ago I was comparing our 26 Outlaw to a 277 Islander. Just eyeballing it, looked like they were the same below the rub rail (delta pad, number/placement/size of strakes, etc.) .
Same hull? |

Thanks XT! The brochures are great. It's cool to see the color schemes of the boats back then. My '93 is toned down a bit from some of those. For a 20 year old boat I still get a lot of compliments. The huge cockpit and the easy engine access are the best features and why I just can't seem to part with it.

Great thread. Brings back a lot of memories. I was a kid during the late 80's, early 90's but was obsessed with boats. Spent hours staring at brochures and boat mags. My parents had friends with a 280ES and another had the '91 320 brochure boat. In '93 my dad bought a '91 model 270 that was originally sold at the Miami boat show. Over the next couple of years several 240's, 24 Outlaws, and a 272's, and one 290 showed up in our area. Even as a kid I schooled many people on the difference between the models. I was the only one that could remember all the differences in deadrise, beam, whether the length included the swim platform. Keep the history lessons coming XT.

Here's a question. How many of the "bigger" boats, say 24' and up, were built with Yamaha power? I remember tagging along on a test drive in a 24 Outlaw with a Yamaha 454 in Ft Walton, probably in '91.

Correct!
Is that a weight/balance issue (Islander possibly heavier in the bow), an aerodynamic issue.....or both? |

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8296/8...4e29d57c_z.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8441/8...283dcefe_z.jpg A other try... It has work... Those pictures are from this summer boating season. It me and my girl on those pics. I bought the boat in missourie last year. Redone the Stripping, inspire from 2007 model. The back gray flag are original and paint in the gellcoat. The idea was to match it with the new stripping to have a 'original' look... I'm happy with the result. The Vynil of the copit has been redone also. Notice how the back stand high compare to a twin. This is one fast way to difference single and twin. I know 2 guys with 29ol twin. Evidently they are faster, one by not that much,, the other with 502's is a other story.. but I'm finaly the one going faster on the water,, my fuel comsumption is easy to deal with... :).. But we realize we'll lke to have more space for extend week-end etc,, so I plan to move up with size in a near futur, maybe a 38 fountain or a Velocity 390 will be our next boat. I'm bringing the Baja 29 to Florida this winter... I can't wait to navigate in the clear turquoise water!! And going to the Copa cabana club in Fort Lauderdale eating shrimps..!! Alway beem there by car so far, should be a great experience... If any of you are in the area this winter and recognise my boat feel free to come talk to us!! :) |

Then that brings up this question; both boats have the same 425hp engine, drive and even prop. The Outlaw is about 2mph faster.

I have seen this issue on many Baja closed bow/open bow models that were the same hull, power, x-dim, and so on. I remember seeing almost 4 mph one year between a 212 Islander and a Hammer! It IS a combination of the added weight forward, a full glass windshield, the wind drag on the bow and even the wind through the walkway hitting the rear bench. Sometimes you can put the bow cover on and pick up a little speed.
XT Without that huge bimini we have there would probably be even a bigger speed differential with the 277. Nice bowrider though. |
Hey guys,
you all seem to be a Baja almanac/encyclopedia, especially XT. Hope you have time for a question. I fish on the LA gulf coast all the time in 24' bay boats but now I'm looking for a boat for the family that still meets my speed needs and am focusing on finding a decent 292 Islander. I've seen several on the market including a 2001 and a 2002 both with 496. There's also another one listed in Austin with 6.2 twins. I've never owned a twin engine before but like the concept. Do you have any advice, warnings, pros/cons about the 292 Islander or single vs. twin? thanks for any help in advice! hopefully a future baja owner, JR |

XT Speaking of Hammers, just curious, what is it's hull shared with? 212 Islander & H2X? |
