Turn key nothing happens

I got the 302 out this spring. Went to crank the engines, and turned the keys and try to start and nothing. Try again and after about 3 or 4 times of trying the key, it finally starts to crank and starts. Just started and both engines are doing it. There is no clicking noises like a starter or relay. Any ideas?

Check your kill switch?

My kill switches still allow the motors to crank, just not fire.

Now easy TeamBaja, it will start, I just have to finger bang the key just right to get it going.

Dont worry, Eds tough and can take the abuse. I wouldnt post something like that outside of the Baja section, everyone else is too sensitive! Just ask Jason Smith! :drink:

Check for corrosion on the ground of the block. Could be some corrosion in the switches as well.

X1 also how old are the batteries? were they on a charger all winter? make sure they are holding a charge.

Fordtough150 05-02-2012 10:42 PM

I agree with checking the batteries first. Keep it simple to start out.

c_deezy 05-02-2012 10:46 PM

Nobody has mentioned the actual key switch. When you turn the key to 'on' do the gauges flicker/reset to zero like they are receiving power? Sounds like the problem lies at the actual key switch, not on down the line if it eventually starts.

dhnjosh 05-03-2012 06:30 AM

Batterys are brand new, and was thinking maybe the key switch. Figured though the odds of both going bad at the same time, probably not but a possibility. Figured it would most likely be a ground, or neutral switch, or kill switch.

Similar symptoms for me last year. Mine was the slave solenoid on top of the engine.

raytart 05-03-2012 06:54 PM

Similar problem on my Nordic Heat with merc 525. Checked the basics at the ramp, neutral safety, battery etc. Left the ramp and headed home. Got home and started to check things out. Turned out to be a loose fuse in the fuse holder for the ignition.

Yea my kill switch now 11 years old has started to give and it is at the point where it toggles contact and no contact.
