Headers, reprogram the ecu, msd ignition

Boss 69 07-01-2002 09:41 PM

What do you think of the vortech pac.

liquid asset 07-01-2002 10:02 PM

You already have the flame arrestor, call ben at Arizonia speed and marine, He'll do your ECU for 300 if your real nice;) and they told me the fuel optimizer was not needed and you can pick up the msd for around 250-300 at CP performance and I picked up used stailess CMI headers for 900 on this board

Luv-N-It 07-02-2002 07:01 AM

Hey Liquid,
What kind of gains did you see in performance? RPM, MPH, and did you notice more fuel cosumption?

Boss 69 07-02-2002 07:23 AM

thanks for your help. any exp. with pro charger?

Dock Holiday 07-02-2002 08:41 AM

I had the same setup and got the same speed out of a 2000 model. They are a very nice boat.

In my opinion the best money spent if you really want serious speed in in a blower. Whipple and ProCharger both have some good setups.

I have seen good results with both. But be prepared to spend close to $10,000 to get everything you need including hydraulic steering, new prop, installation, etc.

The 272 is a very good rough water boat. Frive it like you stole it.

MillerLite88 07-02-2002 09:11 AM

On my 272 502 efi, I added Stainless Marine exhaust, Land or Sea stern jack, Stage III Procharger and picked up 14-15 mph. Oh, and I've put 125 trouble free hours on it since the installation.

dirtlawyer 07-02-2002 10:46 AM

no cheap answer here.... gotta spend some $$ to go faster....

I have a 272 Shooter - went the route of a N/A motor vs blower - for re-sale purposes only. S/C boats around here are a bit difficult to get rid of.....

With modications to the heads and cylinders (.030 over) a new cam, headers, hi-comp pistons, inconnel valves, new springs, etc., etc., I picked up nearly 10 mph. Also converted from EFI to carb motor due to problems with the EFI system leaning out at the high end of the torque curve.....

Remember that with the addition of HP you need to be careful with the drive (assuming stock Bravo) - eventually you'll want to change out the gears or go with an IMCO set up.....

oh, and don't forget the hydraulic steering......

ain't perf boating fun!

Luv-N-It 07-02-2002 11:10 AM

Dirtlawyer,
How much did you spend $? Would be interesting to see your $ compared to the pro-charger pathway.

Raise the X dimension. Wardey

hirschy77 07-02-2002 04:01 PM

supercharger

I had B&M 250 blower installed, painted blue, new carb, etc. on my 500hp carb for 5500$. Picked up 10mph with mild 6lb boost.I'm most happy with mid range ecceleration. Unbelievable!!!

Boss 69 07-03-2002 08:03 AM

Thanks every body,( Miller lite.) I thought with the land and sea
you should alone pick up10% Isn't that their claim to fame? I just would asoume with the work you did you get more than 14-15mph. What do you think you pick up with the pro charger alone
and if you don,t mind me asking what do you estimate the cost was. Thanks again every one for you help.

MillerLite88 07-03-2002 09:02 AM

Boss, before the Procharger I added the exhaust and stern jack at the same time and with those two additions, I picked up 4 mph(64mph to 68mph). I wasn't close to their "10%" but I it was on there and I had already paid to have my trim cylinders extended, so I left it on. The Procharger alone took me from 68mph to 82mph and that is running 6lbs of boost. The cost of the Procharger plus the install was around $5800.

dirtlawyer 07-03-2002 10:56 AM

Luv-n-it -

Be prepared to spend around 10K - I personally woyuld not s/c the motor without upgrading the internals.... you can definitely bolt on a whipple, procharger etc. for about 5 - 6K, but you need to beef up the rest of the motor as well. For me, n/a was the only way to go. still reach mid-high 70's without any problems...

Shooter 07-03-2002 01:26 PM

Yeah, 272's are pretty much pigs of the water. I luv my Shooter, great looks, party capable, and you can sleep on it. Very nice boat overall. I put a 454Maggie with a Blower on it with other goodies and it puts out around 535hp on the dyno. Even with that all I can "really" say is that it does ~70mph when loaded like we drive 'em. Yes I have seen 74, buit it's cold and I'm light. I like the "rough water" comment. I guess it's all relative, I boat in the NY/NJ area nad have seee some pretty big stuff - and the boat handled it, but there's no way I'd say this is a rough-water boat. But I certainly rule on the local waterways. Kinda like a big go-cart with the 4blade and all the torge. I can stomp on the stick and take off... BTW - can you say Luke Chinewalker?

Take care

Boss 69 07-04-2002 07:26 AM

Miller, Thanks for your help. I let you know what I decide to do.
Probly save the money and off the boat for anotheir. stay intouch.

Boss 69 07-04-2002 07:29 AM

shooter, Were you @ the ny poker run. I saw a shooter their. my
body in florida has a shooter with 725hp. merlin block, rips drives off the back like cake and runs mid 80.

Shooter 07-05-2002 09:20 PM

Yes, that was me, I run it every year. Get the stuffing pounded out of me each time...

Boss 69 07-09-2002 07:46 AM

Ya I have to agree, I got pounded pretty good to, but had fun.
Where do you boat down their I would like to come down more offten.

Shooter 07-09-2002 08:56 AM

I'm in Oceanport which is at exit 105 on the Parkway (what exit are ya). I live on the Shrewsbury and have a 100' dock with a lift. There is a boat launch right across the street from me in Long Branch which is big enough to launch big boats (up to 42' I've seen). If you want to put in and keep it tied to my dock for the weekend, gimme a yell.

We have access to the Shrewsbury and the Navisink, which is a cool cruise. Tons of dock and dine on the Nav and in the highlands. NY Harbor is 25 miles north which we hit pretty often. Sometimes we head up to New Brunswisck up the Raritan river and occansionally do the Staten Island loop. INteresting cruise, not the most scenic though. Ocean going is great too, but you have to round Sandy Hook. Lots of choices depending on the waether/wind.

Boss 69 07-09-2002 06:14 PM

GREAT IDEA, Will stay intouch I live in allentown, pa it took me
about 1hr./10min. to get to ny poker run. But I always thrive to
explore new water. Send me a private message and will exchange info to get intouch. Thanks

Shooter 07-09-2002 09:17 PM

Will do, I'll do the same for any OSO'r. Local hotels in the area are cheap. Beach is only 1/2 mile away too.

Way I look at it, people ragging on Jersey is a good way to keep the riff-raff out of the shore...

obnoxus 07-16-2002 08:49 AM

272's seem to have a conservative X dimension,,, has anyone put a shortened lower on,,,,what were your results?

Shooter 07-16-2002 11:14 AM

The way they love to chine walk, I'd be leery.

Boss 69 07-18-2002 08:23 AM

I agree!!

MillerLite88 07-18-2002 08:57 AM

Maybe I got lucky, but I have never experienced any chinewalking on my 272.

Team V 07-18-2002 11:40 AM

Anybody have any tricks to keep the windshield screws tight? And how can I get a screwdriver on the ones on the inside between the dash and windshield?

obnoxus 07-18-2002 01:36 PM

Little bit of blue loctite works on mine. Now the part you dont want to hear.... to get at those,,, pull the black rubber gasket from around the windshield and remove the screws holding the windshield to the boat !!! The good news id now you can fix the weather stripping that I am sure is working its way out from under the windshield !!!

obnoxus 07-18-2002 01:37 PM

Millerlite,

I dont either, but I had my hull blueprinted to. Boat runs about 71 MPH

Boss 69 07-19-2002 08:44 PM

obnoxus, What else did you do to your boat and if you don't mind
me asking what kind of power are you running?
Thanks

obnoxus 07-19-2002 11:16 PM

502 MPI, Gil headers, labbed 23 mirage plus, and blueprinted hull. I do get a little porpose above 60 mph but a touch of tab calms it down,,, I sure would like to try a shortened drive and see what if anything it does. I have looked at other boats tied up next to mine and my drive looked way lower in the water. Of course I dont know running attitude.

Boss 69 07-20-2002 08:54 AM

I to have 502mag. labed prop and a vortech air. cant get the lug
over 66

obnoxus 07-20-2002 09:23 AM

My boat has always run better then most, cant explain why. I bought the boat new with the 7.4 330 php and with headers, and the prop done it ran 64. I had the bottom done and brought it up to 67, swapped out to a stock 502 and put me where I am now,,, It will run 74 MPH, but not the way I use the boat ( no fuel, no equipment etc ) so its not even worth talking about. I just say 71 because I can always prove that anyday. Which prop are you running?

Luv-N-It 07-22-2002 07:30 AM

Obnoxus,
What exactly is a "blueprinted hull"? Could you or anyone else explain this???

obnoxus 07-22-2002 09:24 AM

Most boats have a " hook " at the transom, In other words the hull is flat, then about 3" from the back of the boat the hull curves down to create a trim tab effect more or less which also robs speed. Blueprinting also sharpens the point where the transom meets the hull to help the water come off the bottom of the boat.

the best way to see in you need it or not is take a straight edge from the transom forward 4-6 feet and see if you can see daylight between the hull and straightedge.

I am assuming you have a 272 and you will gain form having it done to this hull, but if you dont have a 272 ask around, I have heard stories of very adverse handling problem after blueprinting certain hulls. Manufacterers will sometime build in a hook to fix a problem in the boats handling. GOOD LUCK !!!!!

Luv-N-It 07-22-2002 10:54 AM

I appreciate your info. I do have a 272. Trying to learn all the "performance marine" stuff now. New to this type of stuff. Therefore, I am trying to take everything in right now.

Hopefully, in a few years I will do some upgrades or move up in a boat. Don't know which one I'll do, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Thanks, Mike.
