UPDATE

Purchased two sheets of white plastic board called azak to fabricate the two cabinets in the mid section of the boat that will house all the stereo, fuse panel, and wiring. The stuff is really easy to work with, but kind of pricey. 2 4x8 sheets cost 300 smackers.

We are also going to fabricate the new cuddy door and top with this as well.

Hope to have all that fab work done in the next couple days.

Here are some Pics.

Thinking about painting the cabinets to match whatever color I choose to do on the exterior, or get them wrapped for durability. Not sure yet.

Looking very nice so far. The pics are great. I already save a couple for reference since my Baja is pretty much a force hull.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Anybody know where there is an aluminum swim platform laying around that needs refinished?

bowsman 09-05-2012 08:48 PM

Your boat is turning out really well. I have the exact same boat. Cant wait to see what you do with the cabin door and windscreen. I want to get rid of my black framed window and go with a white windscreen. Unfortunately I have bottom paint on mine so I will have to deal with that mess eventually.
Keep the updates and pictures coming.

sorry spoke to soon his was teak and it looks like it is gone already

c_deezy 09-05-2012 10:29 PM

I know everybody likes the aluminum ones, but I have a fiberglass one off my 240 that I couldn't re-use. It was actually pretty nice for hanging out/standing on the back of the boat. It's currently red but could be painted/gelled white easily enough. I would give it to you for gas money to drive it over. Let me know if your interested.

I have one of the aluminum ones also, it's 95% stripped. Had a tube that needed repaired, that's already done just needs finished. Make me a decent offer and I might be willing to part with that also.

I sent you an email with some pictures I took tonight. They are a little dusty from sitting around.

The aluminum one is a factory Baja one.

Update

Fiberglassed the hull to the deck today, use 4 inch strips of 1708 and staggered the joints between layers. Thing feels rock solid! Really glad I did it. Also getting little things buttoned up on the engine and tranny before putting it back in the boat next week hopefully. Would like to hear her purr by October 1st.

Next step is to get the cabinets installed and start rerigging while prepping for paint.

Not sure what I want to do with paint yet. 3 options.

1. Base/clear -more expensive and don't have any experience laying down clear
2. Single stage with painted graphics- easier to paint and cheaper than base clear, but have little paint lines from taping off different colors
3. Single stage with vinyl graphics

Opinions?

Did you end up buying this swim platform? You asked about it first so you get first dibs but let me know what you decided.

Also you might want to check out a product at home depot for redoing some pieces in the interior. Its way cheaper than the stuff you are using but it is only used for an overlayment. It is bendable though. One of my boats previous owners used it to cover all the natural looking wood in the boat. It turned out pretty decent.
I'll email you some pictures. (cant figure out how to post on here)
Its called Glasliner

Yep I picked up the platform today, I see there is another one in the swap shop, might inquire about that one. I think it was listed under aluminum swim platform?

mgoblue06 09-09-2012 06:26 PM

Got the cabinets started going back in today as well as cutting the piece of cuddy floor and laid a layer of 1708 on each side of that. Planning on glassing that into place tomorrow night.

I think for the first step to the windscreen I am going to reassemble the frame for the windshield and make some templates off of that then start fitting to the boat later in the week. I can see the light at te end of the tunnel of fiberglassing! The windscreen is the last of it.

I emailed about that one and it looked kinda custom built. All round tube and the brackets that mount to the transom were all at the bottom of the lets. Nothing at the top. So for the price I would rather not have to hack it up.
Hopefully somebody else out there has a lead on a swim platform. Anybody.......

watch out mounting those cabinets permanently. When you go to do that headliner, it will be alot easier with them out of the way. And if they arent there, its one less cut that you have to get exact. That headliner was a SOB when I did mine, but definitely worth the effort.

Formula applies Imron without clear so you have a hard edge on all the graphics. Doesn't really seem to be a big deal for them. If you have experience with single stage, I'd go that route. Painted graphics too over vinyl.

That would be a question for Glassdave to answer in the paint section.
