baja sport 280

Hey oso Baja guys

Just picked up a 89 sport 280 w twin 454s. Motors were hydolocked and I am building twin 476 hp gen 4 BBC dyno tuned by dean Nickerson. What kind of speed should I expect to see with this one? Had a 220 sport and couldn't pass up on this deal. Ppl are claiming with stock 330s they were seeing 62-65 on GPS. Has 280 k planes and t thru hull pick ups. They don't look like they are going to help much with getting good top speed. (Water pickups)

Any info would be great!

-Bought a 280 brand new (also had a new 210 & 220) Mine had 330's/Bravo's. It ran very well but needed the K-Planes level with the hull to keep porpoise in check if the ater was flat. When rough you could lift them all the way.

When new, speedo would read 71mph, years later when gps got popular it read 63. We called it the hand held heatbreaker...

We really liked our 280, had many other boats during the time we owned it, kept it 12 yrs up here at the lake we finally moved to.

I ran my numbers through a velocity calculator, with my boat running 63 on 660 hp, your power should net @ 76 mph.

Good luck,

Kurt

I was gonna say mid 70's. Mine with mags runs almost 70, 65 any day of the week with any load.

I was thinking at least 70. I will have to give an update and some pictures when I get her wet.

Any other info would be greatly appreciated. :)

If it has the same back seat bulk head as mine did, you will hate doing impellers on it. I cut the bulk head out.

I learned shortly after to just remove the entire rear seat assembly for any real engine maintenance. It must have had 200 bolts holding the entire mess together when new! We got it down to 6 bolts and just let the seat backs lay there. After a bit of redesign, the entire rear seat cuold be pulled in 5 mins.

I already tackled the rear seat I sound that the person before me remove the bolts to make it easier. I had a Baja sport 220 prior to this and loved every minute of it. I have both motors out in the transom and stringers are solid. There was also the recent survey done, but is there something else that I should really look into in regards to showing the integrity of this boat? Does anyone have the same boat with underwater pickups the brass ones?? Thanks for the feedback!

I am not illiterate, I just hate autocorrect. Haha

There was a bulkhead that was glassed in on the 280. Made it a real pain to change impellers. When I built my back seat subwoofer enclosure I cut that bulkhead out. Getting to the bottom of the motors now is easy.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I got a 280 this summer and am hoping to get it running soon. What props are you all running and what prop do you think the OP should run??
