Baja 252,272's speed vs hp

hey guys i thought id see what you guys are running with what setups and since my boat is all stock 272 with 502mpi with too much prop just makes sense to add power than change props :lolhit:

so post your gps speed with either setup or HP number and prop

thanks matt

I just sold my 01 272 Boss w/496HO. I ran a 22P Bravo 1 and was seeing 66-67 max and took a while to get there. I Had a 23P Mirage + but never ran it on the boat before i sold boat. Was hoping that would get me closer to 70.

STLriverrat 10-31-2012 03:16 PM

I've only been able to see 61 mph GPS, in my 270. It has a great running 502, think I need to experiment more with some props. Got some big plans for it this winter, really want to see 75-80mph

Hook'em 10-31-2012 03:30 PM

Did you say it makes more sense to add power than change props? Must have a fat wallet bro.......

Mine is basically stock, just a few tweaks and add ons. Gil's, ECM reflash, add timing, shelled K&N, spinning Mirage + 23 with Bblades Baja reciepe (labbed).

She'll run 68 MPH anytime, a tick or two better in prime conditions.

What wheel are you spinning now at what speed/RPM?

no fat wallet just making a joke hence the lol still good to know what guys are running with what setups for future plans

as for mine not sure just bought her and was cold to be doing top end trim runs but shes turning a bravo 4 blade
26p the previous guy claimed 4800@62-63mph(gps) but he also included the stock mirage 23p so we will see in the spring

dudz123 10-31-2012 04:51 PM

heres my plan this year no mods since just purchased the boat so no $$$ just a K&N filter, try both props in the spring and go from there

next winter might do cam,ecu tune, springs, porting of throttle body, intake and heads than the 4 blade 26p should be good

theres a guy locally running a 502mpi with K&N, cam, tune with that prop and says he loves it

keep the setups coming guys

Please let us know how the higher X works out. I have mostly heard that even though the 272 has such a low X, it needs to be that way to carry the bow.

my 375 hp Mag motor pushes her to 61 with a full tank of gas on gps, right at 4800rpm.

Have you been in other 272's Zeke? I'd say you're the one with questionable numbers. If you have/had 450 HP and can't get that tub over 63 MPH somethings wrong with your setup.

And I guess that "sporty drive" must be slowing you down too? How is it the 25OL has "only" 85 HP more than you claim yet is running 12 MPH faster than you? My 502 is in the 450+ HP range and will run right at 70 in perfect conditions. 66 MPH, GPS, ANYTIME.

Ebay Ed 11-20-2012 05:04 PM

my 272 with a stock 310 mpi 454 running 23 pitch mirage plus was right at 54 gps most days

DRP 11-20-2012 07:05 PM

I'm surprised arcticfriends (smitty) hasn't chimed in yet...he has tried just about every combo and has all the results. He posted it somewhere on here before.

I don't think that jab was aimed at you, it was a carryover from a previous discussion about speeds, I fully believe the speeds you are claiming are honest gps speeds, you have massaged everything nice without pouring tons of money in and fine tuned a prop and are now seeing 66 everyday and 70 I assume running on fumes, perfect air etc. For the past 10 years when this question pops up though there is always a couple guys pop up with claims there bone stock 272 or 25 o/l runs 70-72mph with completely stock mag 502 or 496 power , un tweaked, 23 pitch mirage plus etc . Then some poor bastard can't understand why his 62 mph Baja that he has re-propped and did small tweaks on that now runs 65 or 66 is 7 mph slower than someone elses bone stock Baja , because sometimes the truth seems to get stretched or someone needs to buy a gps and quit believing there dreameter. I have paced at least 20 BONE stock 272's and 25 OL with my 272 and on my own GPS in everyday conditions I have yet to see one running anywhere in the 70's without some extra hp and mid 60's seems to be the norm, funny thing is I talk to these guys on the beach and they always claim they run high 60's, low 70's. My 2000 272 ran 62 mph stock with 502 mag, loaded down, 3/4 tank of gas, 4 passengers,, on fumes, no passengers with best prop and no tweaks to motor what so ever it ran mid 60's (I did NOT own a GPS back then though).
Hp vs speed:
1100 hp-my 272 runs 100 mph with 32 labbed at 6000 rpm's with 1.50 gear
1050 hp pulley-runs 96 mph touching rev limiter at 6200 with 30 pitch labbed and tweaked by Cutting edge
old motor-ran:
950 hp-ran 92 mph empty/89 mph with full tank of gas and 4 passengers
with blower belt off (I dynoed it to run either way)
74-76 mph with 650 hp under absolutely perfect conditions 26 labbed at 5400, very finicky though to load and temp changes, will slow down to 70-72 on real hot day running with heavy load
With un-dynoed 502 with 8 psi of boost ran 75-78 or so, with first 540 that only made 690 blown hp on the dyno it ran 78-79 mph or so years ago but later ran 84-85 with more timing and boost (not dynoed at that point though)
My posted hp numbers were all actual dyno numbers BUT with the more generous j607 correction factor and no acccesories so you could probably take 50-75 hp off those numbers if you were comparing to merc racings modern sae rating on there blue motors.
Smitty
One other factor, is most my speeds have been in freshwater at 700-1100 feet above sea level so I am sure you salt water/sea level guys might be a titch fatser with equal hp.

zeke 11-21-2012 12:58 PM

Comparing my #'s to articfriends, with my 400ft higher elevation i would say my #'s are pretty accurate and comparable to his. And my dreamo meter always showed 5-6 mph faster than my gps.
Last CE 26 i ran i was 73.9 at 5900 which is too high rpm i need to be at 5500.
But with that prop full of fuel, 2 big coolers 6 adults i can still pull 71 on gps at 5800.
My prop will be sent back to CE to get my rpm back down over winter

bajabob 11-21-2012 02:12 PM

smitty well said!!!! and zeke nice speed . it is nice to hear guys like you tell how to get speed out of your boat. i hat when some guy tell you to put somthing on your boat that will make it faster and it goes slower. funny think is when guy tell everybody he goes 90mph and you run him and beat him and i only go 82 gps winter comes then we find more ways to make more ponys to go fast

dudz123 11-21-2012 07:36 PM

good info guys its nice to know what real hp is needed to go x speed and to see what the 272,252,25ol are running

obnoxus 11-21-2012 07:48 PM

97 272 502 MPI with headers and cam bump,,,,,,23 Miragre Plus labbed,,,,,,blue printed bottom.

Just wondering was this on a river I know my boat runs 3mph faster down with the current than against it also your motor might have been redone by previous owner and made more than 330 not calling you a liar just most 272 with 454,502 seem to run 63-65 so you gotta see how it sounds hard to believe

Back4More 11-21-2012 11:34 PM

I had a 96 272 , 502MPI with EMI Thunder Exhaust and got 66 out of it.

+1 it might be water logged?? 250hp should net more than 10 HP!!

obnoxus 11-22-2012 07:47 PM

we bought it new,,,,,,,the wife reminded me they called ours a " freak of nature "

Grand Sport said now way we could turn a 23 Mirage Plus with a 330 HP,,,,,,but it did right to the rev limiter

not a river,,,,,,but we ran the ship canal off lake michigan

Yup,,,,,id also straight edge the hull to make sure you dont have an accessive hook,,,,,,I have a pic of mine running next to a buddies and there was a huge difference in the running attitude.

Who knows maybe Baja dropped a mag in it by accident either way a freak of nature for sure hope mine is too lol

Was playing with the lowrance GPS in my boat and had a saved max speed from the previous owner at 64.9 and it has a 26p 4 blade bravo 1
But he gave me the stock mirage 23p too
Hope she runs the 64.9 even lightly loaded ill be happy

Ebay Ed 11-22-2012 10:33 PM

i ran a 23p mirage plus on my 454 mpi 310 hp with no problem it jumped right up on plane and would run i think about 4700 rpm and i think the rev limiter on that engine was 4800 i know it was within 100 rpm of the limiter

C.I.M. 11-23-2012 10:24 PM

I had a 94 272 Shooter
54 gps carbed 454 mag 310 or 330 hp and beat up mirage 23p (what I started with when I purchased the boat)
71 gps, 500efi, raised X 1.5", blueprinted bottom, labbed 27 mirage
84 gps, 500efi w procharger 7psi, added nosecone to drive, 32 lab bravo 1 @4900 (prop was too big, but never had much time to try others)
