Chine Walk??
I have a 98 baja outlaw 24', has a 510ci about 550hp. Ive had it at 73 on gps, i get a real bad side to side movement, "chine walk" . i can trim my tabs down slightly to fix the problem but loose about 4-5 mph. Anyone else have this problem with their boat or have any suggestions on what i could do to fix the problem. I have added more power this year and will be shooting for 80mph. thanks J

Hydraulic Steering and a five blade prop helps like a Maximus prop or a 22degree Hering prop

Full hydraulic steering makes a difference. And when you get into the upper 80's it goes back on rails. But 90's in that hull you really can't feel the water under the boat anymore and you start wondering if your crazy for driving that hull at those speeds. I needed 32p 4 blade to get there...
|
I have found if you have to trim a lot to get the bow up it makes the hull very loose on top end. You need a 32p 4 with 550HP??? What Rpm and what prop do you have now.
|
imco -2 lower..and hydro steering..My 88 24 footer has the outdrive raised 3.5 inches..and its straight as an arrow over 70..
|
Sinve we are talking big power any prop suggestions on where to start with my new outlaw setup? New motor is a 548ci with 650hp. Not sure what prop I should start out with in the spring to get the boat in the water and running
|
The boat has a port to starboard whobble, i have some pictures and theres only about 3 feet of hull left in the water, which is great but id like to have to whobble and with the added power this year coming up, getting kind of nervous....i have a 24-4 bravo 1 on the boat now and turns no problem 5200rpm
|
id love to shorten the drive but im not going to spend big money on something that isnt going to help my situation... this boat also does not have a stepped hull...
|
Mine tended to walk from the mid 70s-80 but smoothed out running a 4 blade 30 labbed, but runs alot smother now with a 5 blade 32 maximus. 705 hp heres pics of the setup.

I know it's impossible but with my old carb'd 496 I ran a 24p b1 1.32 ratio 5200 to 5300 and would see 75 and sometimes 76 on GPS. This was also confirmed by my buddy running next to me in his scarab doing 75 on his gps. Now calculate that slip... With your extra hp. I'd try a 28p b1. I'd stay away from a five blade. It will slow you down 4-5 mph it will help you plane but with yours it planes almost instantly. 5 blade is nice on a newer boat with really high x but not on an old 80's stock x standard bravo boat.

Had a warmed over 525SC putting out 650 HP in my 97 24 OL. It ran upper 70's. Could be a handful if you trimmed it out trying to get every last MPH out of it.
The boat has its limitations. You trim it up to get that extra couple mph out of it, you're going to run into chine walk - especially with a little cross wake. Just give up the extra couple mph and run the boat safer and not so lose. |

Geobell, I know it sounds crazy and rediculous but I've tried this at least ten times and it always comes up the same. And yes drive is 1.50 ratio. I cannot believe myself from the calculator. If I got rid off the factory steering set up would it make a big difference if I did external steering?

I said GPS, meaning not my tach. My tach says 78, which is wrong. My gps says 73mph, I've run Next to other boats a dozen times and always comes back the same....I've called the prop guy from mercury racing and talked with him for hours and he says I should touch a thing the boat is perfect.

Your prop may not be a 24"pitch did you buy it new? Yes external steering will help but full HYD is way better. You will still get chine walk if you get into some cross wake no way around that you have to learn to drive it. How much trim are you having to give it. |

Besides the prop saying 24pitch, I don't know what it could be, it came with the boat when I bought it. It looks like it has been machined in certain spots.

You should try borrow a prop from a friend or have yours check for accuracy. Something is just not right. 3% slip a fast Cat does not even get that. |

What was being said is that your RPM's might be off/not at the right RPM. |
I can check the tach and see what's going on... I'm using maybe using right before my limiter is set on my trim up. Not sure angle or degree? Pretty far trimmed out.

Need to put you drive down Parallel with the bottom of hull. Then mark your trim tab gauge so you know where neutral trim is at on the drive. Then you will know how much trim number you are using pass neutral position. I have found if you go much pass 2-3 numbers on wide open your going to get crazy loose...you can trim higher for lower speed if needed just trim down at higher speed this will help settle her down. If your maxing out your trim that tells me your prop is not carrying the bow or you have a hook in your hull. Here where it will get tricky you can have bow lift added to a prop but I have found this not to work very well on Bravo1 props with V bottoms usually a waste of money. This is why I suggest trying a 5 blade Maximus prop or a 22degree (Bravo style) Hering prop. Don’t listen to people that have not try these prop they have no idea how well they work…usually because of the price. |
What is your drive ratio?

That's a cool looking/sounding pass there Bob. :ernaehrung004:
Looks like you've got her dialed to me. |
I guess in the newer boats there is a good size hook to the bottom of the boat. Were gonna check mine. It is a 98 25 Outlaw.
we just did a 600HP motor for it and testing it we went 68MPH, but on 7 Cyl, had a blown out head gasket on Cyl #6. so were fixing that now. We raised the drive/engine almost 3-4 inches, and with a 4 blade Bravo 1 26P it wants ot lift the stern, and it wont trim the nose of the boat up, but were gonna tune it first before we send the prop in for work. I think we were at 5000 RPM or so, at 68 but not positive. Drive is 1.5 with low water pickup on it. If it goes 75 ill be happy lol.;) |

I have a a 24 outlaw, with 430 horsepower..turning a stock 26 pitch bravo 1 prop to 5000 rpm, and Im running 70 gps..with half fuel and just me in the boat..It would probably run 72 with lower fuel.. The x demsion is raised 3.5 inches. The boat carries the nose so high its unreal. The boat when running wide open and trimmed it runs on like the last 2 inches of the boat, it doesnt chine walk at all.. It might walk past 70 mph, I dont know..but i know at 70 its straight as an arrow..
