342 / 33 OL. Factor subs
Any one mounted nicer subs in the factor locations? Is so any good results?
|
Yes, I had to make a MDF wood trim ring and wrap it in white vinyl to space the sub out far enough because it hit the floor lip. Also trimmed the bottom of the Sub grill so it did not hit the floor.
They sound nice, not booming but nice. I have a large amp on them but also have Eight 6 1/2" speakers also run with plenty of power. Overall the stereo is very loud clean and clear, and can be heard at 80mph (Turn it down for speed runs to hear whats going on) or while swimming. Going to try to seal off the back seat this spring and will update on how it sounds. http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/...rsion/0243.jpg |
i love those bolster rear seats!
|
4 - 12's (U shaped seating makes it easy)
12 - 6.5's And it makes no difference because all I hear is wind. |
Yes that not the area I was talking about. Maybe the 33OL does not have the same panels like I thought.
On my 342, I have one on each side. You can see it here at the bottom. http://hsvracing.com/phpBB2/files/img_1056_123.jpg |
also Offshore excursion.
did those Kicker mids fit in the factory holes for the 6.5? |

More holes on the sides & under the rear bench you can probably fit 10's.
IF you go up to 7.5's and want to go back to 6.5's they sell a ring you can screw in and refit the smaller speaker. I have them in the back of mine. |
Keith, please restate what you posted. My boat has a 10 sub on each side. in the lower location.
the pic i posted you can see the 6.5 mid, the 1" tweeter, and the 10 inch sub at the bottom. i have this on both sides. so my question was if anyone has mounted a better sub then the clarion 10, there and how did it do? |

Just put more. More 10's, more 6.5's I know a lot of people will disagree but I would rather have 4 marginal speakers (brand/price) than 2 really good ones. I wash my interior with a hose & soap. Nothing bothers me more than dirt in the cracks and crevices... This usually means I get 2 seasons out of speakers. If one or two break or stop working, you dont even notice. Ironically, I am too ADHD to sit at a sand bar for more than 30 minutes. I am not the guy to play the stereo and sit on the boat anchored all day. I would rather be out running it and breaking $hit... I do however like "NoWake" zones. It gives me a chance to check my drive temp, drive oil and see what is on the iPod. If there werent no wake zones I probably wouldnt have a stereo. |
I dont lay it all day, or am tryign to be the baddest tied up, the wakboard boats, with 8000watts will win that battle. But I do know the clario subs suck, and my app is turn way donw on those too, so some better subs will let me turn everything up a little. so when I am in the mood alone cleaning the boat, or something I can jam out a little mroe.
I can here it at WOT now, so its not bad, just like a to use the sub amp a little more. |
I guess i have never seen the back seat set up like that it looks like it is not comfortable with more than two.
|
Yes the Kicker fit in the factory holes. I also cut 4 more holes (ahhhhh!)
|
If that is a sealed off area you can do alot better than the Clarion. If it is an open area, the Alpine and JL will do a bit better than the Clarions.
If it isn't a sealed area can it be sealed? If you get a good set of 10" in a 1 cu.ft. enclosure you can make some bass. If not, I would not spend the money to upgrade, it wont be that big of an upgrade. |
its not sealed. it opens to the side of the hull, and from there it goes back to a wall, with s samll opening at the top where the throttle/shift cables, and wires enter the bildge. going forward it opens up to the side storage compartment. so its a free air kind of job, but some area back there to bounce some noice around too.

I think age and not that good in the first place is hurting them the most. I think a decent free air sub would make a difference. we will see.

Yes a new free air sub will make a good difference.
Personally I like to run a few middle to high end speaker with near maxed out RMS Watts for the best sound compared to running lots of speakers that are underpowered. I love my Kickers and this is the first time ever using the brand. Obviously Focal sound great. I also like the sound of the Alpine. JL have a great rep but I personally am not impressed. Kicker also makes a marine sub aleady in a box you might be able to fit in the side panel. Going to try those in my cruiser this summer. |
Run all speakers at 125% of RMS and all subs at 150% RMS for best sound. The least I would do is match RMS. Running less than RMS is not good for the speaker or the amp, unless you are very disciplined at not running the system into distortion .
Personally the best sounding speakers for the money I have heard lately is the Alpines. As soon as I roast my last set of spares that I bough for my boat I will be switching to the Alpines. JL are way over priced in my O for the sound they give. |
