thoughts/opinions on 292 Islander

got a 272I and need more boat, dont want to give up the passenger room by going to a closed bow, among other issues with the cuddies.

I drove a 292I once and liked it but I just think that a 2 feet upgrade is taking baby steps. Any other options, Im aware of the Envision and the many choices in the 28 ft mid cabin range. I want a 30-33 ft mid cabin but that is not a common item.

Envision makes a big bowrider,,, real popular in LOTO.

Look at something else besides Baja.

That 292 Islander has got to be the biggest DOG ever built.

I bet resale on it really sucks.

what dont you like about it, please expand if you could

"something else" brings in the likes of searay, cobalt, regal etc. All fine boats, probably better quality than Baja, but doubtfull they will handedly outrun the islander.

Bill- i have a good friend that has an 292 Islander. to be blunt, he hates it. it does not handle the LOTO water as good as a 272. for some reason, the bow feels really light. at cruising speed, it floats the bow......even with tab. his wife will no longer ride in it if the water is rough. the performance part of it, is disappointing as well. he is looking to sell it or trade it for a 33' Outlaw.

wow,

did not expect an opinion like that. My 272 is pushed around quite a bit in the slop. One thing I notice about the 27 baja is the roll. I notice it a lot while driving but also while watching other ones run. (I spend a lot of time on the deck with binoculars and a cigar!!) It is almost a dead giveaway when I spot one comming down the lake before they are close enough to tell the size.

When I tested the 292I is was at the Tan-tar-a boat show so the water was smooth. I drove the Envision 32 and it rode well but the water was not at the "summer weekend" level. It is getting pretty bad in my camp, and saturday afternoon runs have been rare this year:mad: I always like to say that a lot has to do with your expectation for ride smoothness, but that doesnt get me very far.

I want to dredge this topic up as I am looking at an Islander 292 with twin 350's. It is a 2001 with 100 hours in great shape asking $67,000. Any input (good, bad) is greatly appreciated!

Those are nice boats I had a friend with one.

PH - you dredged this one up from the depths of the archives. I always liked the 292 also. Infact, I was trying to deal on one before I bought my 30. I think I would have been very happy with this boat also. They were BIG. 9ft beam. You could put a 272 (or a 277 for that matter) inside the cockpit.

PH, your post count is going to pass me up soon, thats why I am replying to this.
There were a few (twin) engine 292's built that would run, but the 496 blocks were heavy. The best 292 Islanders had twin 6.2's or 350 Mags.
