The 405 is a great looking machine. Anybody know how it compares amenities-wise to a 38 Special? For some reason, I think it has fewer amenities.... and I find the rear facing seat to be a strange use of cabin space.

Take a look at the Baja 405. Not sure if it is in your budget or not. Tons of room and nice layout. No speedster unless you find one with 525's in it.

I think it's a good looking boat as well, but it does have fewer amenities than a 38 Special. No separate v-birth, the galley is more compact and at least I haven't seen any of them equipped with a cook top, so that option is missing. Some of the early ones were recalled due to the cabinetry coming loose / off with high speeds in choppy water. Engine room access and serviceability seems to be better compared to a 38 Special. It also has the swim platform shower, which is a nice option. They come with an arch, which adds looks and helps with shade, but if one needs to pass low bridges, it will be a pain. There's one for sale here, which should be in very nice condition as far as I was told. I know the 405 was also available with the same Yanmar diesels as our 38 Special is powered with, so for someone looking for great fuel economy, you can't beat either of these if powered with Yanmars. The 405 I mentioned, has 496 HO's for power.

What's he asking for the 405? I've seen them from about 110k to about 150k. Anybody know the MSRP of 38 Specials, and 405s new? Just curious.....

The 405 I mentioned is a brokerage boat and I just happened to hear about it while working on another boat purchase. The asking is $125K, but I'm sure it's not written in concrete... 140 hrs and stored inside... I'm a licensed broker here in FL, so I can certainly help you with the purchase if you're interested, but at the same time I'm not a paying member of OSO (yet), so I'd rather not push my welcome by making my posts advertising. As far as the MSRP prices go, I'm sure they were heavily depending on the options installed and probably don't mean much anymore in today's markets. The 405 was way newer, so I'm sure the MSRP was also higher compared to the 38 Specials.Still, I think they are very nice boats if not bought for the highest top speeds or to substitute a regular cruiser. As a hybrid between the two, you can't go wrong with either of these.
