Need some advice...Can't seem to sell my boat
Good Afternoon:
I have listed my boat a couple different times trying to sell it and didn't have any luck. Now I have purchased another boat and really want to sell my old one but can't get anyone to bite on it. I was wondering what you guys thought...Am I overpriced? I look forward to the replies. I have included a link to my boat trader ad. Greg http://www.boattrader.com/listing/19...Shooter-369125 |
Its a 20 year old boat and way overpriced IMO. All that new stuff doesnt matter to the new owner. If it really is a nice, clean boat then price it at your bottom dollar and have that price discussion AFTER someone comes to see it. (thats what I did)

In my mind you are overpriced, I sold my (at the time) 13yr old 272 with a 502 with around 200 hrs on it for 23k.
Sorry to be honest but, if I was a buyer looking at your pictures: - I see a dirty transom (scum line and exhaust soot), - wrinkled/wavy backrest to the sundeck (leads me to believe it was incorrectly replaced, - miss colored blue vinyl replacement on the bench seat, - the wires (covered by the black plastic wire cover) running into the bench seat storage area is what I would call a “shade tree” fix - I would question if the top was left on, for the dash shots, because it was hiding something Again sorry if I offended you with my observations. I bought an 05 Sunsation Dominator. Bought it where I thought it should be priced compared to what has actually sold. I would think all the work I had put into my Baja would help with the price. I priced it based on what other boats were listed for. Of course there is some wiggle room on the price

No offense taken. I'm looking for input. I just want it gone where do you think it should be priced at? Or anybody else? Greg |

I just sold a 1997 24 Baja Outlaw with 454 and it was very clean for $17500. I felt like I should have gotten more but I sold it fast. I would guess you are slightly over price.
|
I hear ya, sold my 99, 25 outlaw with 380 hrs, clean for $23500. The money you put in it just put it back the way it was supposed to be doesn't add to the value. Its now Clean and Running.... have you received any offers?? Usually, you will get just above the low ballers.
Its all about what the market will pay.. |
Yep your to high. Late 90's early 2000's 272 and 25's are going in the low to mid 20's. The 13k mark would be a good place to start. You might be better off parting it out.
|
And me personally the carb engine would hold me back, unless it was cheap to get into.

1997 is the cut off for most lenders, so the year excludes most the buyers that need to borrow. I use NADA and comps to price a boat. To most buyers stereo equipment adds nothing to the value of the boat. It looks very clean, spell check the classified and add description to it. Your description sounds more like a story than a classified to me.
I'd do some thing more like this: 1993 Baja 272 Shooter, Mercury 454 Mag (360hp, 20 hours on new power), Bravo I drive, Mirage 23 pitch prop, rear swim ladder, Lenco trim tabs, thru hull exhaust, electric engine hatch ram, halon, (3) Interstate batteries on Perko switch, cockpit carpet, drop out bolster, Garmin 192 color, upgraded Livorsi gauges, etc then add at the end Heritage tandem axle trailer with surge brakes included. I try to work from the back of the boat and go over all the options and equipment on the boat. I'm not an expert by any means..... but I have stayed in a Holiday Inn! :stooges: |

For comparison I paid 22,000 For this 1996 272 in May of this year , its three years newer , brand new performance (all forged internals and internally balanced with crane 1.7 iconal valves and headers etc.) with 14,000 in the engine alone that runs an honest 70+ on GPS. And this was in may when prices are high , typicaly prices drop a couple grand this time of year . i feel i got a fair deal (didn't steal it) but its a pretty clean boat . So 2500 more than your 93

Guess it depends on where you live. I'm in southern Ontario and discussed consigning our 2001 272 with a 502. Trailer included and he said we would be right in the middle of the ball park at $ 32,500 Canadian $. Go figure.
|
Been the consigning/broker route! they are looking to sell at the highest price possible and make 10% while making you think they can sell it that high to get you to sign. ! Once they have you signed up, they will take all offers less their cut! Us $ would be just under 31k. Depending on supply and demand..

Fix your ad, as I buyer I don't care what you paid for this and that. How many hours on the boat? It wasn't crystal clear. Saltwater or fresh? The ad that was suggested is spot on, yours is too lengthy and tiresome. Get that boat spotless, Its end of season so don't expect to get a high price and serious buyers are scarce. Start at $14k and take the first reasonable offer.

Also if you ever plan to make more HP the FI system is can be more costly to upgrade to support the new HP. just my .02! As for the OP, the price is to high, if no one is even coming to see it that tells you its way too high. also as others have said change the wording in the ad. also like others have said, the boat is only worth "X" dollars, it doesnt matter if you dumped $100k into its still only worth "X" dollars to the general public. Also isnt the shooter only a 20 degree deadrise boat??? if so that can also be hurting your sale, people on big lakes dont care for 20 degree boats IMO. good luck! |

Funny you say that, to me i find a carb as a bonus, especially when these mid 90's boats were not designed with with ethanol in mind so who knows how long till the ethanol starts messing with the rubber o-rings and seals and other components in a FI system causing issues. Also with a FI system theres more things that can go wrong IMO and leave you stranded. a carb is pretty basic, as long as the fuel pump doesnt die chances are its gonna at least get you home

Eddie's ad is a good listing and I sold a 1995 272 on a trailer with a 502MagEFI with 400hrs in 2006 for 24k the boat was immaculate inside and out. Also had a serious stereo. People don't care about upgrades they look at it as something they don't have to do rather than cash value. Only thing they see is a 20yr old boat that runs on a trailer. Market will not bare 20k for a 20yr old boat
272 Shooter is a 24 degree deadrise it's basically a 272 earlier version. Best of luck in sale.. NADA on your boat on a trailer with your options is $13800.00 why nobody is looking at it. |

Unfortunately this time of year most people are not thinking about buying a boat just to have it sit for 6 months, they are thinking about the Holidays and Winter vacations to somewhere warm.
I understand you put a lot of money into it and you'd like to get it back, but this is another unfortunate issue because the NADA already assumes everything is in proper operational order. Kind of like roof for your house, it is supposed to be there and in good condition regardless if just spend $20K on it, the price of your home will not jump $20K. Now if the roof is falling apart then value of the home will go down. Hopefully this make sense? The best thing you can to do simply follow the NADA guild line, because everyone who is shopping will MOST DEFINITELY be using it. Good luck and I hope it goes well. |
As mentioned, streamline the ad a bit. Looks like a nice package overall. State the hull hours, and new engine hours. State the drive, even if you think everyone assumes it's a B1. Is the new engine still a 454 Mag? State that.
Get some decent photos on there that accentuate what's good about the boat (some broadside shots, good interior shots, cuddy, etc.) Clean the boat. I'd list it at $14,500 or so and go from there. Probably be hard to get 20; the market sucks for sellers (but is great for buyers). Just for the heck of it, I just went through the Baja classifieds section also. I'd say 80% of the boats on there are overpriced, and several have been on there for 6 months plus. Why don't you list on there also? You'd probably have the most attractively priced newer gen 27' on there, which should get it noticed. |
Not to hijack the thread, but im in the same boat! No pun intended. Live in Tx and no luck selling my 05 30 Outlaw. Just listed it on Craigslist Chicago given the big performance boat market there. Afterall, thats where I bought it. Open to any thoughts as well. Pop yachts is also brokering it on boattrader and other sites. Thanks.

ya, had heard of those issues, but I guess I am lucky. 300 engine hours of pure fun in the sun and no issues like those that some obviously had. Come on sale! :)
|
Thanks for all the feedback!! I will get her all cleaned up and list,it again in the spring. I listed it the week I bought my second boat and was anxious about getting the old one sold. No lien on the Baja so I just winterized it and will work on the ad and list again.

Greg, good luck and hopefully when the birds start to sing again someone will buy it.
|
For what's it worth, sold my last boat in the month of Nov, bought my current boat in the month of Feb (in Chicago of all places), so holding on to that glimmer of hope as it relates to off season boat buy/sell transactions... :)

I have had great luck using eBay. You can post a ton of pics, links to running videos, write a book about it, etc. I sold my 342 in August. I had it listed on CL, OSO, powerboatlistings.com and eBay. 99% of the calls came from eBay. I would ask potential buyers where they saw it. That would let me know which ads were worth renewing.
|
I sold my Clean 1999 252 Boss , 454 Mag, with nice trailer for 26k.
