33 Outlaw Performance Upgrade Questions
Have a 06 33 Outlaw with twin 496 mag's. Looking to see what i can do to get some ore speed out of her. What do you all recommend? Would props be a viable consideration and if so where to go?
|
What speed are you seeing now? How fast do you want to go? How much money are you willing to spend? How happy with the boat are you?
|
If your chasing a few MPH ,,,, headers are a good wake up for the 496,,,,,,if you want 5-10 or more you are better off selling the 496's and buying bigger power.,,,,,,,more then that,,,,, honestly,,,,,,buy a different hull,,,,, next will be drive issues and you don't want to go down that road !!!!

Thanks for the feedback. I have been contemplating on going to a different boat, wanted to see what my options were. Been looking at some Cigarettes off and on :)

I love the 33 Outlaws. They are great boats and run good. Mine is on rails at 100mph and we have really enjoyed owning her, sad that shes for sale.
http://www.powerboatlistings.com/view/30204 Its normally smarter to buy a different boat that already goes faster then to modify yours. It would be best if your goal is to go faster especially in a larger boat to not have bravo drives unless you can budget more money for Arneson or Imco SCX drive upgrades. Look for a boat that already is rigged with NXT, #6, or Arneson drives. Gotta love those Cigarettes though! |
The 33 hulls are the fastest Baja's correct? I'm assuming you'd have to switch brands to get a faster hull. Is anything faster than Fountain in the 33' range?

The 33 and the 35 will provide the best useable performance...the 29 and 30 can be made to run but they run out of chassis For Max speed potential in this size range, I'd go with a 33 AVS Scarab |

Others that perform well in that "size", but still they will feel smaller than what you have. 35 Nordic 32 Sunsation SSR or dominator 344 hustler 35 Twin step Fountain Upgrade to one of these boats without feeling smaller and without breaking the bank 388 Hustler with 500efis and run in the 80's 38 Fountain 2002+ twin step semi stag and run 90+ with 525s If you are worried about a return on your investment leave those 496s alone. Either sell them and upgrade to blue power, or keep them off to the side and return to stock when it comes time to sell. If you wish to stay with Baja, you already own the right hull |
Active Thunder 32's are about the same size and that hull with some decent power will fly! There is one out of florida with I believe 800 a side that does north of 115.
|
Change exhaust on the 496's. CMI not necessarily the best performer. Do your research on exhaust. Get the bottom blueprinted. Find the right prop combination. Get a reflash for the 496's also. I have a 36, and would love to go faster, but I am not willing to give up the huge cockpit and cabin with a ton of storage for what it is. If you want to change brands, get one with a step bottom. And lose alot of the space you have now. Ah trade offs...

I miss the speed of my old boat but I absolutely love the room. You will hate a sonic or active thunder in thats because of tight cockpit. MIne runs 80 on the dreamometer:) That impresses the rookies :)

^^^^^^^^^^ That's why I carry on board, a complete sea pump assy !!! Port motor no problem, Stb motor, not so much. There is no doubt about lack of engine room space on all of the Outlaws. On my 36, in order to pull the motors, I have to remove the outside headers and one inside header. Changing plugs, 2.5 per motor. But in the end, the lack of motor room space hardly compares to the time spent using the huge cockpit with lots of friends on board :)
My ideal boat would be a 40 Outlaw with Whippled motors and Arnesons. Tons of room and a good top end. Yes it is not a Cig or an Active Thunder, but the price is relative... |

How wide is the floor on your 33 Outlaw at it's widest point? Let's make sure we all use the same yardstick here. There is give and take. There isn't enough money on this planet to get me to change impellers on a 33 Outlaw sans pulling a motor. While the cockpit is huge on the 33 Outlaw, the engine room and cabin are smaller than other boats. There is only so much real estate in 33' feet of OAL.
The super large dance floor can also be awkward for passengers during poker runs and rough water. Sure there is enough day room for 10 people on the boat, but I find boating is best when it's just me and my wife making a mess of my interior :) haha |
I found a guy on the lake that did my impellers for 200 bucks and he supplied the parts :party-smiley-048: did them in my slip, then hot wired the motors for testing, paid him two weeks later when I was there, I try to support the little guys trying to make a living that do outstanding work for a fair price,

My daughter asked why I had all the scratches on my stomach from laying on the engines. Other than that wasn't too bad!! |

Impellers actually were not horrible but not gravey either. All boats do have thier pros and cons but the 33 outlaws are pretty amazing boats especially for the money. Everything about the boats is great or above average PLUS the cockpits are a bonus! |

Look behind the dressed up McLeod interior and monster gauges. Their wiring is horrendous. They use screws in many places that should be through botled. Interior panels and back seats held in with plastic body clips, worst headliner design known to man. To me they spent a lot of time and money on flash, and skipped engineering 101. But, not bad boats overall and great for relative newbies. Safe, and stable. Great lines. The 2,3,4 or even 5 cooler thing kills me. Haven't you guys heard of soft coolers? Are you handing out free drinks to the entire bay all day? |

If my shed was already built and was ready to move upto the 33, your boat would already be in Minnesota ;) |

www.aocoolers.com are the best on the market. Most of the others will bleed dye and leak. AO has lifetime warranty. I have at least 6 of them, probably more.
I don't allow hard coolers on my boat. |
Sometimes I wonder if we only run the Boyne Thunder Poker run to get a free soft cooler................:ernaehrung004:

Hello I'm new to the forum but I would like to tell all Boaters who have had a McLeod Designed interior. That recently we here at HRT have purchased the Mcleod Design Group, we are currently available for any updates to your interiors or new interiors sorry for the delay. Many banks and legal issues had to be solved before going forward I hope we can help all our offshore Powerboat friends in bringing the high quality of Mcleod interiors back under the new Name of HRT. We have retained all of the interior components and personal to continue making great high class interiors, thank you and sorry for the delay. For updates to interiors contact me, here on the forum or please feel free to call.

I've got a friend with a 37AT. I would seriously consider that as my next boat because of the steps and room. ......But would I trade my current 33 and $100grand for it??? Hell no!. The 33 is not the fastest but it has to be the best damn boat for the money hands down.
