33 outlaw. 526+ hours

If well taken care of.... What is life of 502's before a rebuild. And would you rebuild the top ends, leave the bottoms alone or? Is 526+ too many for a 2001?

Thanks.... D

I think it depends on the scan to see how hard it was run. 502 are good black motors.

Most of the issues I have seen/read are related to manifolds leaking and getting water intrusion. Hell, my 454 mag on the 25 looked good but guy who bought it had issues and I only had 400... Manifolds shot!

So if scans were good and you just did new manifolds/exhaust... I would think you could get 8-900 + hrs !!

Oh and where you been man!!!??? Lol, we love our 33!

Thanks man. Lol... I've been lurking, dealing with a few things but all good and back on track now. Everything about this 33 is perfect but the hours scare us a lil.

I had over 750 hours on the 502 in my 1993 Formula 271 when I sold it. Still ran very strong. All depends on your maintenance and how hard you run it. My feeling is if it ain't broke don't fix it.

There are almost 1200 hours on my 454 mag mpi;s in my old 2000 29 Outlaw. Never been opened. I think they are pretty much the same motor. Changed oil every 30 hours.

Black motors are very solid. but I had to rebuild the top end on mine right around 500 hrs. Had uneven compression, so figured it was time. I ended up having a blow head gasket due to running lean from 5 of injectors being clogged :(

If you can access the spark plugs (center ones will be tight) I would just say keep a eye on compression (good maintenance the guys talk about), and since the injectors are easy to get to on the black motors,, lable them, remove them, and send them out for cleaning this off season. Clogged injector can turn into a $3000 top end rebuild or more on each engine. I think OSO member BUD??? or something like that will clean & flow 8 then ship them back to you for $180? Sending the injectors out for cleaning and flow service is good maintenance anyways ;)

I hear ya.. as mentioned on a couple threads, they would require some normal maintenance around those hours.. Depends on the Deal you can get if for... I bought mine at a steal b/c of the nice pretty green and pink colors which scared a bunch of people off. They accepted my first offer sub $40k. with only 12 hours on new motors. They had everything new except the intakes! I figured I could wrap or change colors later, which I did!

So my colors would be your hours. compression test, change manifolds if not done (stocks are cheap) and and maybe have injectors flow tested and rebuild and I would think, you should be fine.

I have 450 hours on my 502 mag mpi. I had to go through the top end this winter because when we did a compression test there was two low cylinders. Had a blown head gasket. I had the heads refreshed, cleaned and flow tested the injectors, all new fel-pro gaskets, and then normal maintenance items. In all it cost me $1500 bucks to do everything. If the boat is perfect and the survey comes back good I would get it. To refresh the top end on the motors, you aren't looking at much if you do it yourself.

I would do a compression test and a leak down, it will make you feel better knowing you at least checked. run it the rest of the summer and throw gaskets at it this winter if you need them! my best friend has a 32 black thunder with 1200 on 454 mags, never opened up!

as for the boat, I looked at least a dozen 33 outlaws this spring and if the boat is as clean as you say I would snatch it up! a clean 33 is hard to find, and if its as clean as you say my guess is the owner took as good of care of the motors as the rest of the boat!

Good Luck!

BUP is in the DFW area if my memory serves me right, if not then in the HOU area now.
