Default Plugs

Little sweat, bloody knuckles, and a lending hand the starboard side has new plugs. For being 18 years old and 460 hours of use I’d say they fared pretty well. You can tell they were the original plugs seeing they have black paint on them

Whaaaa?! 18 years on the same plugs?! Holy smokes! Are they that hard to get out of the 496? I thought I changed mine once, maybe not though.

And what is the gap spec? Looks huge

I change my plugs every 2 years. Maybe I'm wasting my money??

496 Sparks are not cheap.I remember something at 100$.496 need Iridium sparks and 400 hours is not much runtime for sparks.
At my 600SCI i change every season when controll the headers.A set is under 20$ !

You can tell they are original too as they are Denso. Merc later switched to AC Delco. The NGK's are the way to go. The starboard side plugs on a 496 are easy to get to. The port side is a bit tougher due to oil lines.

Haven’t hitting a chance to install it yet hopefully this week. I did get to run the boat this weekend with a labbed 4 blade Bravo 1 24p and it liked that prop. I can tell that I need to swap out the standard length for a shorty tho.
Took a few pictures after I got her cleaned up:

Looking real good!! I did my plugs , wires and cap/rotor yesterday on my 252 w/ 454 mpi. 320 hrs everything all original as well. Wasn't the worst job on that boat , but wasn't fun either. Sporting some new scrapes and cuts LOL.
Raw water pump and new belt is today's task.

When I had my 37 AT with 496HOs, I got spark plug changes down to 2 hours for 14 plugs.

Then it took another 2 hours to get to the 8th plug on each motor. What a *****. The aft starboard plug is the worst one.
