General Boating Advice
 

I am looking at getting into the Baja boat world with a purchase of a Baja 275 with a 496 HO. Before I dive in head first I would like to get some information about what to expect as far as maintenance and repairs. I understand the basics of winterization, and changing motor and drive oil. From my limited research it also seems sea water pumps are a big problem, and the impeller should be replaced every 2 years. Another one that I see a lot is gimbal bearing wearing out. To all of those who know ton more than me, my question is what are the failures I can expect, and what other maintenance or important things do I need to know before jumping in. Thank you.

I am not an expert by any strectch of the imagination. I'll just speak from my experiences.
1. Impeller - I would just normally replace this every two years - every year if you are doing a bunch of boating in water with lots of sand/silt- it isn't a fun exercise but if I can do it - anyone can.
2. The routine oil, filters etc -- MUST do as the owners manual prescribes - for most I would guess that is once a year
3. If this is a new boat to you I would STRONGLY suggest that you have a marina go thru the outdrive, check engine alignment and bring all the fluids up to date. While they have the outdrive off it maybe a good idea to change the bellows and inspect the gimbal bearings. I know this isn't cheap - nothing on a boat is - but it is worth every penny!
4. If you trailer your boat - make sure you check the breaks, bunks and tires (don't ask me how I know that)
5. How are the condition of the life preservers, fire extinguisher, batteries, horn etc. You can't skimp on the safety stuff.
