Baja 272
Hello all! I'm not going to make this a ***** session, but I'm having a rough time.
I've been looking for a 272 for a while now. Some people have helped me on a different site with suggestions, but now I need some help. For those that do not know, here is what happened.... 1st boat I looked at was a 1994 in Bay City. Great looking boat and priced right. I paid for the inspection and they found it needed some things, the worst being having the heads torn off for low compression in 3 cylinders. I still wanted the boat but was a little put off because the ad read "Fresh 454" and it wasn't. It was a used motor with 500 hours and low compression. I wondered what else was wrong, so I passed. 2nd boat was a 1998 272 found on powerboat swap shop. The guy answered my ad and things were going well....he then told me he was recovering from a heart attack and wont have the boat ready to be seen for 2-3 months. I understand the heart attack, but don't answer the ad and then tell me I have to wait for 2-3 months to even look at it. 3rd boat was a 1995 272 and we agreed on a price, we were supposed to meet this Saturday and now he pulled it out of storage and he didn't winterize it correctly and it's pouring water from the block. He told me freeze plugs were blown and lord knows the damage that has been done. This was just told to me last night. I have the bank check in hand from Friday, the day after we agreed and we were set to go. I even offered to help pay for repairs and he declined. I personally think he decided not to sell, but doesn't want to tell me....but I could be wrong. That being said.... I'm looking for a 272. Must have a windshield (no screen please). I would love to have the color purple somewhere in the interior and/or exterior. EFI would be preferred. Switchable exhaust is a must. Other options would be great too, but those are the basics. I have up to $20K to spend max...including taxes, but all of the above have been under $18,500, so the cheaper the better. I know they are out there, every one of these boats I've looked at have been under that price. Thanks for reading. SpAzZ |

SpAzZ - Are you looking for cuddy or open bow or either? Purple should be somewhat easy given the years the 272 was made. I wouldn't limit myself to switchable exhaust since it can be added later. If the boat already has silent choice (or similar type; split through transom/hub) it is really easy to convert to switchable.
I'll keep an eye out as I look for a 30OL. |
I would eliminate the captains call and go with switchable mufflers anyways. Slight can reversion issues, internal flappers sticking open, the Y tube cracking or loosening are all issues with normal wear and tear. I'm not saying to avoid it, but don't pass a good boat just for that reason.

I looked into the one in WI. Not a fan of all the gauge pods and holes in the dash for the screws.
I just saw the other one, so thank you for that.

I'm looking for cuddy only. I figured I could add the captains call later, but since I was going to buy a new to me boat I should try to get it setup the way I wanted now rather than later. Thanks for keeping an eye out.

Did you see this one?
Looks nice and 525efi as a bonus! http://www.grandsportcenter.com/pop-...5-boss-525-efi |
Yes...but I'm capped at 20K max to spend.

On a side note...I came across a 1995 Powerquest 270 right in my price range. I understand that this is the Baja section, but in reality what are your thoughts?
|
Powerquest are great boats, 270 pq or baja 272 can't go wrong with either
|
I had a 1997 272 bought brand new. Cant say enough good things about that hull. put over 700 hours on that boat.
I would try and stick with 97 or newer if possible. That is when the interior and dash was updated FYI. |
|
Is this your boat? I saw the ad before but also saw the 25K or make offer. I thought getting it in my price range would be an insult.

Not my boat, but maybe you guys could meet in the middle, I had a 2000 272 502 mag and loved it, if you wont move a couple grand to get the right boat it may be tough. good luck
|
I wish I could meet in the middle, but according to the wife it's 20K unless my boat sells first. So I'm kinda stuck.

A boat that's been stored for 6 years is going to need some serious maintenance. I don't recognize the boat.
Its about 1.5 hours south of me in a smallish town according to the 3 county license plate on the trailer. |

Maybe starter, alternator, shift/steering cables? I know it's not good for boats to sit that long, but if the price is right I would think it might be a pretty good deal? |

Serious maintenance? If it was stored (inside) and winterized properly would it really be considered "serious" maintenance? Not doubting you but just curious.

I really didn't think of that. I called them yesterday, they seem real nice and sent updated pics after they cleaned it up. They were supposed to call me today after getting it running....haven't heard from them yet, so that might be a bad sign.

Work that against the deal, if the OP has mechanic skills it could be ok, it all depends on how it was stored, or it could be a turd :poopoo:
|
They are taking it to their local boat mechanic...as with everything I've tried to buy it is staring to go south. It cranks and won't start. Fresh filters, fluids, plugs, etc. Sounds like a fuel pump to me, but I'm not there.
I did find this today and sent an email because they were closed. Got an email back from Todd and he will be calling me on Monday. Anyone know this boat? It says it's on consignment. http://lewisboat.com/Power-Boats-Inb...c-a5f00168be10
