272 baja BR how much hp to go 85 mph

I just bought a 1995 Baja 272 bow rider with a hp 500 ,few upgrades like cmi headers, 741 crane cam when the motor was refreshed a couple years ago , spins a 25 plus at 5100 at around 70 mph , handles good, just wondering how much power I need to make this boat go in the 85 mph range .... hp 500 with p1sc procharger or a 548 cid at 700hp... or more and how much more?

IMO, 750-800hp full hydro steering, Imco 1:36 drive, a Priest and bottle of Holy water..............WHY, that hull wont like those speeds, O ya and a crash helmit

You need to talk to OSO member Articfriends he will set you straight and help you. He had a 272 that did 100MPH

billybpaul 06-24-2016 12:42 PM

33outlawsst thanks for putting in your reply IMO.. lol... get your ego checked lately?

Smitty had 1000+ HP in his 99 mph 272 and he'll be the first to tell you IT AINT SAFE. The GENERAL rule is 15+/- HP per ONE MPH. The other problem you'll run into is trying to keep a drive alive with that kinda power. Most here will tell you, "if you want a faster boat, buy one" because the game gets crazy expensive.

Not sure what you meant about 33's ego but hes had the same boat and (not speaking for him) I believe his point was 272's aren't speed demons and really develop bad manners at speeds over 80. Good Luck.

thanks hook`em ,I`m really just looking for constructive comments , I`m sure I`m not the first guy that`s looking to get more speed out of a Baja .... as for a faster boat I already have one , 07 290 velocity 632/846 hp

Talk to Smitty as Keith recommended. He's full of good stuff and knows the 272 in every trim.

F-2 Speedy 06-24-2016 02:05 PM

Good luck BillyP, just remember........um never mind...................btw I dont have an ego...cheers

Haha, how did his post come off as egotistical? Hmmm.....

If anything you should thank him for possibly saving your families life with his suggestions.

Its not all HP..... Need to get the hook removed and hull blueprinted also.

Hyd Steering 100% true. We put over 700 hours on our 272 and several upgrades. Great boat, again, just not engineered to run that fast.

The open bow will hurt you as well.

Tom272Baja 07-09-2016 09:58 PM

I run mine at 85 all the time...........

On my trailer behind my expedition..

Lol

I had a 94 272 shooter. I put a 500 Efi and a M3sc pro charger on it. It would run 85 all day long.

articfriends 07-17-2016 10:34 PM

When my 272 had a estimated 750 to 800 hp it ran mid 80s, when it had 950 hp (on dyno w no accessories and J607 CF) it ran 92ish running light and 89ish loaded down. A customer had a open bow 272 w what was supposed to be bi cu inch na motor at 750 hp and i clocked him along side st 82 gps. I never blueprinted my hull but did rerig boat for stellings box (slowed boat down and porpoised), also tried imco -2 shorty, boat couldnt get past mid 90s with full kill setup that normally ran 99.5mph plus tried to swap ends. At 85 with ful hyd twin ram steering and big tabs boat was pretty solid feeling for its size. If you got into criss cross chop you had to try to hit it square or back off, fwiw

Are you guys with the big power running stock Bravos or did you have to step it up? I've got a Vortech Race unit but reluctant to put it on with the stock Bravo. I know it's a grey area and every boat reacts differently, so I'm just curious how the stock unit has fared under this hull with power to it.

puzzleboy 07-29-2016 01:34 AM

A stock Bravo will not survive 850 hp.

10,000$ upgraded Max Machine worx drive is what I ran, back in 02/03 there werent scx's available, bmaxes had issues, at 1100 hp I broke it about every 20-30 hours with 32 pitch, with 30 pitch at 1050 hp drive went about 40-60 hours between failures, I also tore mine down every 30 hours or so and changed parts that were on verge of failure before catastrophic stuff happened. At 850 hp expect to be in stock xr every 50 hours or so , fwiw
I sheared off a number of max worx billet shafts too but again, had over 1000 hp and 1000 ft lbs of tq
IF you decide to go big power budget for upgraded drive, twin ram full hyd steering, better engine coupler, bigger oil cooler etc

Ill tell you this too, when I first installed blower on 502 and was making about 600-650 hp I had the stock 2000 drive with weak floored gears, with 26 pitch prop I hole shot-ted boat all the time, beat on it unmercifully, never broke the drive for over 100 hours (boat ran 75/76 like this). I upped boost, went to 28 pitch and added lightning headers, boat ran 78-80 ish, broke drive first time out with that set up

Not really. You have a big, heavy single boat that you are thinking about putting big power behind.

Sounds about right, lol. Thanks for the input.

Trying to keep it under 650hp as that seems to be when $hit gets real. From what I can tell the process is to add power, blow up existing drive, and just keep upgrading the drive until it quits blowing up. I was thinking of trying a B1X and go from there.

It currently has a 3"x18" oil cooler w/#12 lines, the HP coupler, forged internals, and still sorting out the fuel system though.
