antifreeze and winterizing
A friend of mine recently told me I should be using marine grade antifreeze (so called PINK antifreeze) in my block to winterize. I have had boats for years and always used regular automotive anifreeze to winterize. Has anyone heard of this?? Have I been doing it wrong for years??
|
You should not use any antifreeze this winter in your Baja, that way your engine will crack, and you can get rid of your so called speed boat and buy a nice Sea Ray. Speed Kills!! slow down enjoy life.
Bill 2000 22ZX Donzi 454 Mag 74.1 GPS "all original lets see Baja do that" |
What a Jack___,that coming from the guy who tells me he is seconds from loosing control of his (stepped hull) boat @ 72mph. Stick to jetskis!!!! And dreaming of owning a home someday!!!
|
First of all you have the speed WRONG, if you were listening you would have know that we went 74.1 on GPS-Bob! Second of all our house is being built as we speak and it will be worth way more than your house and we are only in our mid 20's. Did you ever get your gauge bezels or wouldn't Lori let you spend your money on them? I don't appreciate your comments to someone who has only been nice to you even though you talk to him as if he is a piece of ****. We all know that your boat is slow so you can stop being jealous of our boat. I think for Christmas I will buy Bill his supercharger. If anyone has anything to say about this posting my name is Patience. I don't understand why you are so rude to Bill when he has given you parts for your boat and tried to help you in anyway that he could. Maybe you should try being nice to him all the time and not only when no one else is around. My question to you is, why won't you take a GPS for a ride on your boat? Are you still afraid of the truth? Please direct all correspondance to Patience.

damn, SORRY did'nt mean to get you at the bad time of the month. Nothing worse than a upset women!!!
|
Not that it isn't any business of yours but it isn't my time of the month. I just don't like the way you are treating Bill. He has done so much for you and yet you treat him badly. He actually thinks that you two are friends, but friends don't treat each other the way you treat him. Don't apoligize to me but to him. Bill was just joking with you about the post and you came back with a malicious remark. Maybe you should think about how you talk to him. Patience
P.S. Check out Donzi registry for all the **** Bill is getting there. They don't believe him when he told them the speed he achieved. |
It sounds to me that there is more going on here than we know. Can someone shed some light we these guys are in a pissing match:confused: :(

Can anyone shed some light on the winterizing and antifreeze questian? What is everyone else using?
My apologies to everyone on OSO, who read that other stuff. |
Dude, here is my thought. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I have always used auto antifreeze and never have had problems. I start up at the house and de-winterize there every year. I am constantly using water, trying to break down the antifreeze, as it drains down the driveway, diluting the antifreeze as it drains into the sewer too. I know I'm not the most enviromentally safe person, but I try.
I believe the pink stuff is the "correct" stuff, because it is politically "correct" and it is the right thing to do. Especially if you de-winterize at the docks or at lakes. The pink stuff will not damage the ecosystem (plant and animal life). Therefore, that is why I de-winterize at my house. Auto-antifreeze is very harsh on the ecosystem. I believe it needs to be recycled/disposed of in a properly manner. Again, I know I'm not handling my situation "correctly" but that is what I do. Now, I have shed some light...:) By the way, you don't want to get caught de-winterizing at the docks/lakes with auto-antifreeze. BIG FINES!!!!! PATROL WILL KNOW BY THE TYPE OF DISCHARGE TOO! Not that I have been fined, just what I have been told by area marina's! |
Luv-N-It is correct.
People have been using auto antifreeze for decades. "Marine Antifreeze" is fairly new to the market, relatively speaking. Both will do the job just fine, the only difference is the toxicity. Auto Radiator antifreeze is poisonous, while Marine antifreeze is environmentally friendly. |
Thanks alot, I too winterize and dewinterize at my house. Sorry to say, I will have to do this in the next month. (Wish, I could talk the wife into moving to Florida.)
I was being told the auto antifreeze was bad for the motor, which did not make any sense to me. Just wanted to make sure I was not missing something, somewhere thats why I put the questian out there. |
If there's something in your manual that states one way or the other, follow those reccomendations. Like for instance, in my 496 with the closed cooling, the manual specifically states not to use Automotive in the closed loop because the lubricants are not the same.
However, for winterizing purposes only, on a regular(non-closed cooled) motor, either should work fine. People have been using the Auto stuff forever. |
I winterize with auto antifreeze. I also recover by draining the blocks in the spring. I recover about 80% and use it again.
I spoke with a marine mechanic I respect, he says that the new stuff turns slushy but does not freeze or expand. He suggested I use it. I've also dry block stored my boats buy draining the blocks, manifolds, risers and oil coolers. Not for the faint of heart, but if you can get at all these items it works just fine. Make sure water comes out of each one or you have a clog, again not for the faint of heart. My dad worked at a marina for 30 years and said that's the way it used to be done. Very cheap too!!!! Here is a tutorial: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/com...tm&store_num=4 |
Please do not use auto anti-freeze and let it run down the drain. Boats pollute enough without us having to help them along.

I agree, try not to toss out too much of the green stuff, if you can help it, it's pretty wicked stuff. By the way, you will need about 5 gallons of whatever you choose to winterize.
About the whole Donzi issue up top, is it 77.3 GPS as stated at the bottom, or is it 74.1 GPS? As far as Donzi vs. Baja, we could all go back and forth for hours, but personally speaking I ran dead even with a new 26 in my 24 OUtlaw. I had 4 guys, he had two, we ran thru some very snotty bigtime Sunday afternoon boat traffic waves on the Ohio River (were talking cruiser waves, not bass boats.....and lots of them, really rough). Anyway, they are cool baots, no doubt, but you came to the wrong place to start talking **** about your Donzi. Because although I like all the boats, I ran 70+ with this guy for about a mile, dead even. I was pretty pleased considering how rough it was and how he was bigger and heavier. My .02. LAter |
Allen.....was that you at New Richmond getting fuel Sun.
afternoon ? |
Allan,
What's up? A few of us are going to Cumberland (Conley Bottom) Oct 11 for the weekend if you guys are interested. My buddy Rick (yellow 240) liked my 302 so much he went out and bought one. As for the step vs. non step. I went from a 29' Fountain to a Baja 302. The step hull glides better on top of the water in smooth water. The nonstep is much better in rough stuff. For me I prefer giving up the top speed for quality of the ride. Not to mention I have a four-month old daughter. To each his own. I personally think Donzi builds a nice boat, but there isn't any room in them until you get to the 33'. If I were looking for a stepped hull boat in that price range, I would go back to a Fountain! Just my.02 Tim |
Birddog, nah, that wasn't me, I made the mistake of going to the Bengal's game instead of heading out on the water. That's what season tickets will do to you......THEY SUCK SO BAD!!!!!   I may try to head out this weekend, weather and river depth considering:rolleyes: :D
Timbo.....HOWDY Baja Brother....HAHAHAAAA. Thanks for the invite, but I am staying in towm for the rest of the year. Glad to hear you are enjoying the new ride. Sure is sweet looking. We can build you a few 509's if ya like.....HeHeHe.....See ya out on the river perhaps, you too Birddog.....Later guys....A4 |
