Should I or not, its free......88 Baja 280 sport.
Hi everyone. I was looking for opinions on this boat that I have a chance to pick up for free. It will be a project boat for I know that but im just woundering if this boat would be worth it or not. Keep in mind that I am up here in Vermont and so choices for free boats are not as good as down south or out west. The boat im looking at is a, I think, 88 Baja 280 sport with NO RUNNING GEAR AT ALL, motors, outdrives ect but the hull, floors and cabin appear to be in really great shape. This wont be a finished boat by next year but within the years to come as we are buying a house right now and the closing is at the end of the month. Just looking for something worth fixing and eventually able to put in the water. Here are some pics of the boat, its free but I can get the trailer for $1200 with it which I would do if this is something worth fixing up. Please let me know what you think either way, either the good, bad or the ugly. Thanks.

Free is always good.
It really all depends on how much work and money you want to put into a boat that old needing a lot of parts and work. If it is solid you could have a nice boat in the end. Bear in mind it will not be fast as they are heavy and slow. Resale down the road will not be good at all.

Pass. You'd put way more into it than it is worth (or would be worth.) Unless you are doing a deck off refurb, you might get it all together then find a gremlin that requires a complete deck-off rehab.
My advice: figure up what you would spend to rebuild this and go buy an existing, running boat.

No upside to taking that boat on. It's ready to be crushed and the trailer should be right behind it.

Well by going from what I have seen for what these boats are going for, I have seen anywhere from 10k all the way up to, believe it or not, the high 20's to even one for $32k, which I thought was WAYYYYYYYY out their. I still have my 87, 30ft mach1 that still has some good parts that are still good on it that I can use as far as controls and small crap, the omc crap is all still good to sell for parts, outdrives, gimble ect, motor parts, to use to sell for extra cash to put into this one. I will be looking for a 502ci to put into this for power with bravo outdrives. I have a buddy up here with a scrapyard of boats to dig through for really CHEAP, if not next to nothing.
