Any ideas?

No clue, but I would consider a small block 350 conversion first. I would think a 350 would give you the most bang for the buck and be easier to sell down the road. Was a small block available from Baja on this boat when it was new?

yes it was, same flywheel and motor mounts. i know someone with the 350 and i have the same top end as they do and i seem to have better handling. the 350 seems to be too much weight in the boat.

While you have the it apart I would have a machine shop balance the rotating assembly. The 4.3's I rode in all seemed to have a vibration at higher rpms. On a stock engine they will live for a while but in a modified higher rpm engine things could get ugly fast. As far as hp #'s, I would run the desired set up on a desk top dyno and see what kind of hp it will produce. From what people say the desk top can be very accurate. Usually 15 hp gain will result in a 1 mph gain.
