Thinking of selling my 280. Talk me in or out of it.

Got a 1989 280 sport. The boat is nice. It's clean. Has about 400 hrs on the hull. 40 hrs on the power. It has 2 Ron Sporl built 516's tuned currently at about 550hp. The boat has seen 80.7 mph with some labbed 27 mirage plus props but I run stock 27's as the cruise is better.

It runs 74-75 no matter the load. 78 ish with the stock 27's. Good radio in it, nice trailer. Runs everytime as it should.

I would love something bigger, a tick faster. But I own this. I know this is wide open vague but I'm looking for opinions. Thanks

I think you'd be much better off keeping the power and selling with some lower $$$ stock power.

What dose the check book say? You want something that is a all day 80+ mph boat. ("a tick faster" ) and bigger. Speed = more $$$$$$

There is a 33 OL on Pop yachts with warmed up 500's, and boxes. Should be close to a 80 mph boat. But Salt water boat also. $50k. For Baja and bigger, not sure if you will get there with black engines. 30OL with 496 HO's, labbed props run 78 on light load.

There is also a few MTI's out there with 1350's for 600k-800k they should be a little faster then you have now.

Its all about the budget. There are a ton of fountains F/S now also if you can take the cabin and left hand sticks

Many folks lament about selling their Baja. ;)

Normally I'd say find the boat that you want with stock power, put that into your current boat and your bigger power into the new bigger boat, but now you've got a slower boat. Now you need new motors or buy superchargers and set them up. Sounds like a huge pita just because you're a little bored.

Edit: Don't forget to budget another $20k for the solid outdrive needed on a bigger boat.

Everytime we have moved up to a larger, better, faster boat I second guess my decision ....until we hit the waves and put sticks to the dash.

How much can you realistically sell your Sport for? How much is the boat that you want cost?

wwolfe 10-19-2016 12:46 PM

i agree with above...how much of a loss do you want to take on the paid for boat with nice power? Then how much is it going to cost out of pocket to upgrade to get same speed and larger? I personally would keep your boat. respectable speed and more importantly paid for!!

So what did you buy? ;)
