Procharged 272 w 502 mpi info
Returned my 2000 272 to somewhat stock.last year and sold it, freshened original 502 mpi, hand ported/touched up a set of 088 heads, reused my highly modified 502mpi intake, put in a 500efi cam. With extensive tuning was able to make 560hp on my dyno with 2 1/4 dyno headers, prob more like 530 once installed in boat with gil manifolds. Boat (272) ran 62ish for the short time it was stock back in 2000, 63/64 on fumes. Ran 69-70 ish with fresh, slightly modied 502 on fumes na w 24 labbed, 68 loaded down with non labbed 24. New owner who is a friend and customer of mine came back this year and wanted a procharger. We just installed a m-3sc w 4.5" upper pulley, makes 6 to 6.5lbs boost at 5700. Tuned boat on water for him, seeing 79 gps now at 5700 with labbed 26 pitch merc 4 blade, full tank of gas, 3 passengers, might tweak tune a tiny bit more and see 80 gps . Thought I'd throw this up here for the guys who wonder what numbers a 272 runs procharged. Owners already talking about bigger injectors and a 4.25 pulley. 46 lb injectors are about maxed out at this power level. Left big oil cooler, lines, big fuel pump, regulator, longer trim tabs, hyd steering on boat so its well suited to these mods, Smitty
Felt good to drive this boat again supercharged! |
Did you ever do any work on the hull bottom or 'is it stock.
I have the interior out of mine and I'm thinking of slapping in the 540 for a little fun |
Thanks for the info, Smitty. I pretty much take your word as gospel around here;).
Any reason you chose a pro charger over something like a 240 roots blower? My guess would be that you don't need the lower end torque of a roots on a light hulll? |
I got a good deal on a used m3sc for customer, boat still had innercooler overboard hose and fitting plus i still had a custom.aw504 innercooler bracket and other pieces laying around so it was a easy install plus its still fuel injected so it doesnt have all the driveability issues a carbed boat has. Also gets 3+mpg cruising at 4000 which he would probably lose w a carbed roots blower

What does he run for outdrive and steering? 79 is pretty healthy.

What are you upgrading the drive to?
|
I had max worx drive on boat when I owned it but I also had over a thousand horsepower. Back years ago when I had a lot less horsepower in it I ran the stop 2000 drive for a couple years at about the horse power level it's at now or slightly less made it didn't break until I turned up the Boost and tried to run a 28 pitch then I sure the floor out of the early style gears. I will probably just upgrade the drive for him with late style thick floor gears and see what happens but if he breaks it first to destroy something else I will just have him buy a new XR Drive

That's great info and a huge help in understanding what I can get away with. I've been debating on putting a 240 roots blower to take 500 to 650ish, but wondering if I'd have to reinvent the boat to do so.

Smitty, what tank pick up/fuel line did you use to feed your beast?
|
Back in 02 or 03 or so i re-rigged a ton of stuff on boat, pulled gas tank cover, most gas tank screws had missed the stringers and were screwed to nothing, seat base bolts were a joke, rebolted them in right, took a mile of wire from the 40 foot long harness that was strung back and forth acrossed the transom and pulled pick up tube and modified it. I dont remember exactly how(was 13 or 14 years ago) but seems like i silver brazed a bigger tube on it and got rid of a check ball and adapted a -10 an fitting to it. I also had a guy glass in a x brace on gas tank cover because it bounced so bad when you walked on it. At same time i put in bigger l angles on motor mounts, billet dana mounts and sealed the drain holes that were drilled thru stringers in bilge that were NOT glassed.

That didnt take long, chad was running next to me on st claire river boosting boat acrossed cruiser and ship wakes and took floor out of drive gear. He's sorta new to boating, i asked him how he was throttling in the rough stuff and he really WASN'T. Sticking my last stock drive gear in till he can upgrade drive rest of the way or buy one, his only goal at moment is to have boat back for next wknd without spending big $$ as he doesn't plan on running much more this year.
