Anyone replace their carpet??
 

It's about that time to put some new carpet in my boat. I took it to a carpet place and they quoted 400-500 bucks to pull the old out and lay the new in. I was thinking of just laying some lined carpet over the exsisting. Kind've a cheap fix. What do you guys think?

I'm planning on replacing mine as well (actually replacing the replacement). Our carpet is fairly thin and faded. I'd love to get the carpet I saw in another 33. I really like the Baja logo (its stiched in silver).

I'm thinking I'll need to go to the factory? Probably mucho bucks:eek:

Nah, see thats exactly what the carpet I'm looking into putting in looks like. See how the mats are lined? thats how the carpet would be. Kinda like a snap in but no snaps...That logo does look sweet though!

You can buy Marine grade carpet and have the edges bound if you want to loose lay it. Binding is what you see on the edges of the mats. The carpet you have now is probably glued down in the cuddy that's why they want so much to take it up. Baja wanted $450.00 ( in 1997) for the cockpit carpet in my 252. I did it myself for less than a $100.00. It snaps-in. I don't think laying over the old will work to well

A good upholstery shop can scan a logo or pattern by computer, and have the image sewn into the carpet. The last time I had it done it was about $115 for the pattern and $15 for each stitching. That was for smaller images than the Baja logo shown above, but I wouldn't think it would be too much different

what do you prefer, basic fiberglass floor for easy cleanup or the carpet for comfort?

Both,,, bare fibergalss when we wear shoes in the colder days,,, carpet during bare feet summers !!!!!!!!!!

Tank, our 24 outlaws have resin coated ply-wood floors that have carpet glued down. I don't think I would recomend installing a snap in carpet after removing the old carpet. You could replace it with new carpet that is glued in. I would also like to get a snap-in type carpet (without the snaps) for my 24 outlaw that lays on top of the current carpet I have. I would like to do this to keep the current carpet in good shape and to make cleaning easier. I think it would be easier cleaning a drop-in carpet out of the boat as opposed to cleaning the carpet that is glued down in the boat. A friend of mine called baja to get the name of the company that makes the drop-in carpets for their new bajas. We called the company (forgot the name) and they said just give us a pattern and they can make it. I have not made the pattern yet, but was planning on it. I have taken all the measurements and just need to cut it out of a drop cloth or something similar. I will ask my friend for the name of the company and try to get back to you.

My old boat was a 252 Islander with no carpet in it. I put new carpet in this past spring. I had Big Thunder Marine at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri make the carpet for me. The lady that make the carpet at Big Thunder does an excellent job, you do not see the old floor at all when the new carpet is in, it has a rubber backing and it is a marine grade carpet. She also inlayed the Baja Logo into the carpet, it looks just like the one in the photo listed above. She prides herself on the carpet. I took my boat to her by water on a Saterday afternoon and stood on the dock and drank beer while she cut a template out of newspaper to match my floor exactly. The price was $600 and she charged an extra $100 for the Baja logo for a grand total of $700. The carpet was ready two weeks later. She likes to custom fit the carpet, however she said she can just go off the specs of the boat interior if you did not want to bring the boat to her. I'm sure she would ship the carpet anywhere. The carpet is UV protected and highly waterproof. It is a lay in carpet and she put a couple of snaps in it to hold it in place. I recently bought a 29 Outlaw and I am thinking of having her put some new carpet in it this spring. I really like the Baja logo. She can put it in any color you want. I like the logo also but I've seen them start to "unravel" after heavy foot traffic.

I keep my logo covered with an indoor/outdoor runner so it doesn't unravel. Kind of silly though when you think about it. I have a carpet to protect the floor then more carpet to protect the carpet. I'm so anal I shouldn't even bother owning a boat.

At any rate - regardless of what kind of carpet you have, a snap or two is a good idea to keep the carpet from levitating from the wind.

This is something along the lines of what I was originally thinking of. Putting the hard rubber undercoating stuff under the new carpet so it wont slide around ontop of the old carpet and then be able to remove the new carpet for good cleaning and what not. I would be interested in the name of the company and how much you're looking at for it.

Tank, my friend is going to look for the name of the company tonight. If he cannot find the information, I believe we got the information by calling Baja and asking them who made their drop-in carpets.

I never use my snap-in carpeting anymore since I had a problem with a mildew smell after the carpet got soaked. I was very careful to thoroughly dry it, but after a couple of days back in the boat -- PEEEUUUEWWW!!!! Took a bunch of mildew killer and some serious carpet cleaning to get rid of the stench. Smelled like an old mobile home.

Any ideas how I can avoid this in the future? I thought this carpet was mildew resistant... :confused:

Baja does not sell carpet for older boats. Dont know what they mean by older boats, 13 years isnt old!!

I replaced all the carpet in my 24 Outlaw 4 years ago after having to remove the fuel tank to fix it. It was a royal pain in the a$$ getting the old stuff out. After some blood, sweat, and a lot of swearing, I got the "floor" in good enough condition to put the new in. Got it from Boat US. Used 3 cans of the spray adhesive (get it at most hobby stores for about $15 a can) that I "borrowed" from work (shhhhh......don't tell on me;) ) I even replaced the stuff on the flat areas of the engine compartment. That has not faired well over the years.....guess I didn't get all the grease up as well as I thought I did. I've had to repace that part of it already as it simply came up. While I was at it, I made the center section removable in case I ever had trouble with the tank again. Which I did 2 years ago. Glad I went that route, didn't have to tear up the carpet again, just took all the screws out that hold the center section down and took the tank out. Much easier than the first time.
