29 outlaw single question

I came across a 29 outlaw with a single 500hp in it. My question is how do they perform with a single? Are they a drive killer? What kind of cruising speed and top speed? Is it too much to pull with a newer f150?

I can’t specifically speak to the 29’ Outlaw, but my 272 Islander is about the max that I’m comfortable towing with my 2013 Silverado with the tow package and air bags, and that boat is 4’ shorter than the 29’ OL. If you’re looking for a speed demon then you’re looking at the wrong boat. If you’re looking for a family cruiser then you’re in the right place.

Several single 29's at LOTO. Big Thunder sold quite a few of them. Probably will ride more level than a twin BBC boat. A guy at my condo complex has one and I don't think he has had any drive issues, but he has 454 or 502mpi. I think he runs about 56 mph. I would think top speed with a 500hp would be around 60mph.

You'd have to be much more specific about towing. If I remember right in general an F150 can tow between ~7k and ~12k lbs depending on options. I've towed my 232 with a number of different vehicles, some significantly more capable on paper than others.

I think a 29 Outlaw w/ twins would be a much better decision.

Thinking of coming back to the dark side Tom !!!???

Possibly, but really only looking at big singles. That way when I blow up a bravo I can afford to put an imco on it.

My f150 is a crew cab,6’-6” bed, 4x4, and has the 5.0 V8.

What’s the tow rating?

It largely depends on where you’re going. A few blocks to the marina? The wife’s Tacoma May do the job. Long distance with a mountain pass? Not a lot of fun.

Its going to be close to 8k on a steel trailer. I would not want to do it with 1/2 ton and 5.0. It'll be shifting like crazy and probably destroy the tranny.

I had a 1999- 29' outlaw with twin 7.4 MPIs, when I got the boat I had a GMC 1/2ton extend a cab 4x4 with the 5.3. I towed the boat once with it and it was not safe at all and pushed the truck around. I ended up replacing the truck with a 3/4 -2500HD diesel GMC -4x4 Crew cab and it towed it with ease. If you put some good quality light truck -10ply tires on the 1/2 ton Ford it will make a huge difference on how the truck will handle with the boat behind it.

Thanks for all the replies. I think based on the info you guys provided I need to wait and get back to a heavy duty truck before boat shopping.

Speed is easy, its' prop walk and prop roll, and balance with a single, set up the motor to run a 30P Bravo 1 or 28P Maximus, that's probably more speed than you will probably, what engine is in it.

DOCANDTHEGOOSE 11-26-2020 02:09 AM

30P Bravo1 or 28P Maximus is the XR lower gear ceiling for power.

502 MPI can go to 555 MPI at 9.8/1 compression, how fast do you want to go.

My 252 Islander is 6,470 pounds with trailer according to my local scales. I tow it with a 2010 F-150 with the 5.4 engine,. 3:55 final drive. On flat roads I really don't even hardly notice the boat back there and I get around 13 mpg. Hilly country it makes its presence known, often times shifting down to 3rd gear and staying there whilst climbing a hill...and the mileage drops to about 8 mpg.

I wouldn't want to pull any larger load on the roads I trailer my boat, without going to a 3/4 or 1 ton truck.

I had an F350 with the diesel engine. Not dually but was 4 X 4. I pulled a 28 Pantera with twins and a steel myco trailer with ease. Need the 4X4 with low range to pull the boat out of the ramp though. I also had a Baja 24 outlaw with a single 502 which had a top speed of around 68 MPH. Had a Bravo one drive. But after a few years it started to develop too many cracks. Thats why I went to a Pantera. Sold that to get out of boating.

I have a 29 Outlaw with a single 502. I pull it with my 2012 F150 super crew. It pulls and stops great. I have the 3.5 ecoboost with the trailering package. My trailer is a tandem eagle steel. My trip to the ramp is an hour and 15 minutes each way. I hope this helps.
