Whats a Baja 272 sunpad weigh?
WIll be removing my 2000 Baja 272 sunpad/engine cover soon to do some upholstery work. Can 2 men lift the sunpad? Wondering what that thing weighs........
|
Probably better off with 3 of you can get more help. A guy on each side and one in the back. I lifted the sun pad off my 25 outlaw a couple times. Not that, heavy more cumbersome
|
Two can do it, three is better. Do not tilt the sun pad all the way back when taking the nuts off the studs that hold it to the hinges, the hinges will dig into the gelcoat.
|
Thanks guys. Im going to be redoing the wood around the bottom of the sunpad.

Yes. Mine is like that in several places.

UPDATE.....Sunpad was easily removed by myself. Backed my truck up to the stern of the boat. Raised sundeck nearly vertical. Removed all nuts but one on each hinge side and left remaining nut loose. Disconnected actuator from Sunpad. Lowered sunpad backwards toward top of truck and leaned it against a box on the swimdeck. Hinges did not contact gelcoat that way. Removed final 2 nuts from hinge/sunpad, worked studs from hinges, moved box from swimdeck, and lowered sunpad onto the bedcover of my truck. I'd estimate it weighs 100lbs. I had it off in 10 minutes. Will be re-doing wood around perimeter of sunpad over the winter. Injectors coming off next and being sent off for flow testing. Engine being pulled, installing new rear engine mounts, cleaning and repainting bilge, and installing new coupler while I'm there.

Removed bad wood today on my sunpad. Most bolts holding it were rusted on the T nuts. I will use bolt cutters on the remaining bolts. Planning on using plastic based wood product to replace original wood.

What is the bottom picture of?
How much wood is actually part of the sunpad? Just like a perimeter coaming or on the whole thing? Thanks |
Bottom pic is inside (top) of the sunpad with foam removed. The whole sunpad base is fiberglass. Just the outer perimeter has wood attached.

I've put off doing this project in hopes that someone else would first, lol! Looking at the wood pieces...approximately how thick are they? Obviously custom routed/fit to match the profile of the sundeck. You say you are thinking of using a "plastic based wood product" for replacement? What sort of product? Would something like this work:

Personally I would use King Starboard for replacing the wood around the hatch. In my Active Thunder there is no wood used anywhere and the bolster seats, combing panels, engine hatch cover all are King Starboard underneath the upholstery.
https://www.boatoutfitters.com/mater...king-starboard I like the Starboard idea, then drill and glass the t-nuts in place. if you don’t want to fight taking all the staples out of the hidem strip you can order new from Albrights in Corinth Miss. |

The old wood strips are 1/2 inch thick. The PVC board you linked would work but needs cut down in thickness to 1/2 inch. Starboard would work too. Just use the old wood for a template and transfer the shapes onto the new product and cut out with a bandsaw or jigsaw. Router the outside edge to get rid of the sharp corner and the holes for T nuts can be located by the existing holes in the fiberglass bottom of the sunpad.

I see your boat has Sunrise Beach as the home port. If you live close to there I would swing by Waves and Wheels to ask Noah if they have a few strips of starboard in the length you need. I would bet they have some scrap pieces in the length you need, since they use it quite often on projects. It would be way cheaper than buying a full sheet.

The hinges attach to the sunpad by going thru the fiberglass and new plastic strip. The strips are held by T nuts and bolts.....all rusted together in my case and replaced with stainless. I did not remove all the vinyl but just pulled it back enough to expose the area I needed to work on. I could donthe same job next time in about 2 hours if all materials were ready to install.
|
Awesome! I am glad to see the final results. I'll be doing this job myself come Fall, more than likely.

Jammer...I am confused as to how the heck you got your vinyl off to do the repair? Post #8 seems to clearly show a bare nekkid sunpad separated from top to bottom...? Yet post #19 indicates you didn't have to remove the vinyl?
Mine is on like a sock...I can get no movement fore or aft to try to get it off the fiberglass 'bottom' so I can get to the screws/bolts holding the rotten wood on. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6b8ca031d7.jpg |
Some more pictures of what I am up against...the wood is pretty much completely gone! The port side IS gone by the hinge connection, and the starboard and aft sections aren't much better...

The forward end is in great shape...no repairs needed there...
