MSD ignition system
9MM plug wires
Eagle connection rods (good to 500hp says the ad)

replace water pump w/ crossover tube
stock with underwater exhaust makes 190hp.

others ill do-

and for some looks-
valve covers chrome
pulleys

any one have any ideas? What would you think i should do? any of those mods not worth while? anyone know where to find a Supercharger?

Allan4 12-19-2002 07:09 PM

Are you sure you want to put all that $$ into this motor?? Man, you are talking about some serious coin. I'm not a 6 cyl guy, but I would think you may be able to get upper 200hp. That is a pure guess. From looking at the parts without any specs, I am just going off probable ratios. If you told me that run down without any particular specs for a 502, I would say about 500-525hp, or a little better than 1:1 ci/hp ratio. But without any exact numbers or having ever even owned a 6 banger (take that back, my old CJ-7 had a 258 ci straight 6), that would be my stab. I doubt any more than 300hp, and your tq may be really ****ty, I don't know.

Think long and hard about this. Why not just look for a 350mag and go from there??

hotbeek 12-19-2002 07:34 PM

I'm with Allan4,

Find a 350 mag(260Hp). What's this hooked up to .......an Alpha drive ? The 350 would be worth the upgrades. The 350 could easily be massaged into the low 300's for HP. You could probably safely run 330-350 HP through your Alpha.

The 377 Scorpion would be a sizeable upgrade. These put out close to 365 HP.

I know the 4.3's seem to have pretty decent power but , I think you'll be much better off with a small-8. Resale would be better with a stock motor whether it be V-6 or V-8. I'd much rather pay the extra cash for a V-8.

Good Luck

Hyper Baja,
Look at Jegs, they have crate engines for just over $3000 complete carb to oil pan (350 cid 330 hp). I think this would be easier for you to sell later on if you decide to upgrade. Good luck with your project

HyperBaja 12-19-2002 08:06 PM

the ZZ4 Gm motor. I have looked at the cost to put that in....

Motor
Exhaust s pipe, tips
Headers
Fuel system
mounts
flywheel
plus all the other goodies you find you have to do.

Yes it does have an alpha.

WETTE VETTE 12-19-2002 08:07 PM

Hyper, I have the boat for you...

My dad is seriously considering selling his 1988 Baja 196 Sunsport. It was bought new by him in 88 and has been meticulously maintained. It has a 500 HP 350 in it and an Alpha SS drive with a Spinelli custom prop and a 150 HP nitrous kit and MSD electronics to control the timing when on the gas. Now for the good stuff. Naturally aspirated it runs 80 to 82 MPH on radar. On the squeeze we have gotten 86 MPH!!! Its a bow rider and the motor is under the hood. He is asking $12,000 or best offer. If you want a sweet, fast big block killer sell your boat and grab this one for a great price. :D Did I mention it also has polished CMI E-top exhaust? You won't be happy with a hopped up V-6. My opinion only!

But I dont have 12k.

WETTE VETTE 12-21-2002 10:09 AM

Well you have a boat and from what I have read you are willing to spend say $3000 to $5000 dollars on HP parts. Sell the boat and put the hop up money towards the new boat and there you go!!:) Have you gotten a price from anyone on HP exhaust for the 4.3? My guess is it will be more expensive than units for Chevy Big Blocks. Kind of a supply and demand thing. The fact is not many people are hopping up the 4.3 and there aren't tons of options for parts out there. Maybe my dad's boat isn't the right one for you, but I really think something like that will be your most economical route. I highly recommend the Baja 196 Sport/Sunsport and the 210 Sport/Sunsport and the 19'7" Checkmate Senator. I have personally been involved with these hulls from stock to highly modified (my 210 does 98 MPH!). All three run very respectable with 350 Mags and if you find a 210 Sport or the Senator with a 7.4 they will run mid to high 60's on radar. At best your hopped up v-6 may hit 55 to 60 IF you do it right, and being a pioneer on a tight budget will make that very difficult. Hey if you look around you can find these boats I mentioned from $8000 to $15,000 in perfect condition. Red Stripe has a very nice 196 Sport he was selling. I saw it and it is a good looking boat and is still stock!! Don't take this wrong, its only my opinion!!
Good luck
Craig

Rear seat back comes out and the ram air is exposed! We also made the center of the windshield "quick release" which helps direct air to the ram air!

The red military type switch is the arming switch for the nitrous. Then the micro switch in front of that can be easily pushed by the drivers' pinky. We have a micro switch on the carb to assure WOT, a fuel pressure switch, and a timing retard that works with the full MSD ignition.

The business end. Notice the brackets on the left hand side. That is for a detachable swim platform. My dad really likes the clean look of a transom with no platform so he made quick release brackets out of stainless. The shotgun mufflers are 50% submerged. No noise tickets on this boat! Hope I didn't bore you to much with this stuff!!

HyperBaja 12-21-2002 12:53 PM

Nice boat.
remember guys, the boat is my dads, he wont let me sell it. It has taken 2 years to convince him to let me do anything to the engine and thats only if I get it professionaly done.

pwam1 12-21-2002 05:16 PM

It's kind of difficult to do what you want when you can't make the decisions. If it was me, before I would spend all that time and money to redo the 6-banger I would buy a 350 and slip in there. Or as said before, convince your dad that a 210 would be a really fun ride (it is!) and look around for one with a 350 or a 454. either one would be a fun boat that will outrun most boats on the lake, and if you look around aren't that expensive.
My opinion only!

Allan4 12-21-2002 07:36 PM

That's a nice clean little boat. I can't beleive that thing does 86!!! Hyper, you are getting some good advice here. Good luck in your decision, I would do what ever creates the least ammount of headaches from all angles.....$$/dad/dependability/etc. Have fun.

HyperBaja 12-21-2002 11:32 PM

Well, I got a job now, so Ive been thinking about buying a new boat, maybe a Donzi 16 or 18 classic with the 350 already installed.

HyperBaja 12-22-2002 04:35 PM

What about this
http://www.1800runsnew.com/gm04.htm

Then exhaust, water crossover pipe, prop, drive shower, and I think that will hold me over from may till june, then what would I do to it first?

How quick do you think I could go on 325HP with a 1.84 or a 1.5 Alpha??

WETTE VETTE 12-22-2002 05:22 PM

325 HP should put you in the 60's with your hull. I just got a Hot Boat Magazine and the Land & Sea Stern Jack is on sale for like $1450 for the Alpha. That would be a really cool way for you to get some performance out of your boat and you can leave the motor stock for re-sale and reliability purposes. Just another possibilty. The V8 engine replacement just seems like a very large undertaking that will be very costly. Keep us posted on how you are coming with your project!!

Allan4 12-22-2002 07:59 PM

What about an 18 donzi with a BBC?? Is that factory??

HyperBaja 12-22-2002 08:18 PM

nope. biggest you could ever get from the factory in a donzi 18 was a Scorpion w/ bravo, a 23k upgrade.

HyperBaja 12-22-2002 08:19 PM

What do you think I will need for the 350swap?

Mounts
Fuel Pump
carb
flame arrestor
exhaust
headers

Allan4 12-23-2002 08:08 PM

...Oil cooler, Powersteering fluid cooler, Ignition system(distributor, box, wires, plugs), throttle linkage, remote oil filter, coupler, a hose from the oil drain plug for oil changes, probably oughtta go with some extra gauges, like water pres, oil temp and fuel pres. 4" exhaust hosing, and a bunch of time to rig this dude. Can't think of anything else, but I know there is more. Not sure how much is inlcuded with the motor package purchase you are looking at. Don't be intimidated, it's fun stuff. Goodluck.:)

HyperBaja 12-23-2002 08:11 PM

sounds to expensive on a high school budget.

I think I will rob a liquor store :D

Allan4 12-23-2002 08:28 PM

Tell me about it, I rigged mine last year. You will get nickled and dimes to death. It's all worth it in the end.......:D

Rob one that sells lotto tickets.....:D

HyperBaja 12-24-2002 02:09 PM

I saw a 210 sport for sale in NY for 3,995, 350" 260hp, trailer and stand, cover, alpha 1, 1/4 swim platform, what do you think?

Tommy, with family in NY we need to visit soon.

SMALL BLOCK FOR SALE

Hey Hyperbaja,

Before you spend a lot of money on a 6 banger let me give you a great deal on a 388 stroker motor already set up. All you have to do is put the water pump, alternator and plumbing on it and drop it in. It even had the oil cooler and the racing headers.

The motor is a ZZ4 block with dart 202 heads, eagle forged crank and eagle rods, J&E pistons, roller cam and rockers, victor jr intake, 2 carbs, an 850 AED for racing and a 750 for cruising. It has lightning headers on it as well. The headers alone were almost $2K.

The motor has been dynoed at 470 hp and 500 ft lbs torque. It has 4 hours on it total. I was going to put it in my boat but traded it for a 25 outlaw instead.

If your interested my e-mail is [email protected].
