BAJA or The House

My buddy wants to know if he did the right thing paying double for his BAJA than what he paid for his house. What do you think?

Sounds like a wise investment. In about 2 years, he'll be able to sell the house for twice what he paid for the boat.

You only live once, what ever makes you happy.

Depends on age and family as well. These days I work so much at work and the home I really don't have much time left for the Baja.

If your young and no kids...go for it.

My opinion is this... who cares what people think. If you have the cabbage without stressing yourself...who cares. You only have one life to live, so live it to its fullest! I have seen some people save, save, and save all their life. Then, when it comes time to spend their money to "enjoy life" something happens to them phsically, get cancer, or they die of a heart attack or something like that. The point is-enjoy life now. You may never get the opportunity to do it later! My opinion is not of the majority, but I like it and it makes sense to me.

If your friend is enjoying his boat with his wfie, kids, family or by himself then great for him! When I bought my first boat with my family, it was the greatest thing I've done for us! Heck I've got the wife screaming for a 36' Outlaw now! Thing about it is, I'm the one saying, "I think we need to wait longer":D

By the way, glad to see you back on the board:)

Oh yea, let me add one more thing with this edit...someday I'll proabaly be in the position where my boat will be worth more than my house and I can't wait for this time! At least I'll be on the water, enjoying a cold beverage, instead on sitting on my ass at my house doing nothing!

how about paying slightly more for the boat,
and now being worth 1/2 as much as the house ?
you can justify anything in your own mind !
i can't wait to do it again !

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this.

Example:

My house is paid for in full. It is all the house we need and want at this time. So we elected to buy a boat which will give us a second home tax deduction and allow us to enjoy our favorite past time in a way we could not with a big home mortage.

We could have kept our smaller boat and built a bigger home.

We could have sold the smaller boat and built a hugh home.

We could have kept the smaller boat and current home and put the extra money in the bank.

You cannot have anyone else make these decisions for you. For us, the larger boat was the way to go. We have everything else, and especially have our health and time to enjoy the boat before we get to old.

I agree with DOC
We tried to get a way from boating for a couple of years. ( Tried Harley)Still fun but not boating.
but we have way too much fun on the boat, A bigger house ment bigger headaches.

As once quoted by a good friend..."this ain't no practice run...". Be wise but try not to live your life so you look back having left some "on the field". Everyone has their comfort zone though. Bottom line, have fun, no matter what you find yourself doing. Just don't blow it all. Piece of mind.....put $2k in a ROTH IRA each year, that will help solidify your retirement, because boats are usually a bad investment......;)

Be good, A4

I second what Luv-N-It says. I know too many people that died before they got a chance to enjoy themselfs.
