Production Time
 

I ordered a 33 Outlaw w/ SST package and Level II graphics from the custom shop on 3/1/03. I was told that it would be delivered on 5/28/03. The salesperson also told me that I would be contacted by the custom shop re: the paint. To date, no one has called. I never ordered a new boat so this is all new to me. Should they have called me by know as boat is due w/in 4 weeks. I figured that I'd ask here 1st before calling the salesperson. Thanks in advance.

My sales person needed to ask the Baja sales rep. anytime I wanted to know something. The rep. ended up calling me, he was a nice guy who had all the answers, and he even got me a photo if her in production.

My boat took 10 weeks from the time I ordered to the time I took delivery but mine did not go thru the custom shop.

Also - when you talk to the salesperson, ask him for the hull ID#. The hull ID# will tell you if the hull was laid in March or April. If you ordered on 01 March and the hull wasn't laid until April, I would think delivery will be delayed. If he tells you he can't get the hull ID# he's lying - or it means that they haven't even started your boat.

how can you tell from the hull number when they started building it?

Seach the Internet for more specifics info on hull ID#s but there is a letter as part of the hull ID# that represents the month the hull was laid - A=Jan, B=Feb, C=March, etc.

The month designator will always be followed by year. For example, if your hull was laid in March you will see "C03" somewhere in you hull ID#

"D03" would indicate April.

Also - the same info is also useful for folks who are interested in buying a new boat from dealer inventory. The prospective buyer can look at the hull ID# and tell how many months the boat has been sitting on the dealer's lot being neglected.

I dont want to dampen your spirits, but my 342 took 47 days longer to get than what the dealer told me it was going to take.

FYI

Started dealing on my 36 in December 2001. Finalized the deal late February/Early March 2002.

The boat was delivered to me on June 16th 2002.

We went to the factory on May 6th to take a tour and see where the boat was in production and it had just moved into the first stage of assembly and the engines and drives were being rigged.

From what I have seen, the smaller boats in the lineup are shipped in as little as four weeks and the larger boats can take 12 weeks.

Once the order is placed, Baja orders all the items they do not make in house for just in time delivery, such as the engines & drives, stove, refridge, sink, McLeod bolsters, steering, batteries, blowers, shifters, hatches, lights, horn, radio, speakers, etc, etc.
It really is a job to make a boat come together.

It seems like it takes for ever, but it will be worth the wait.

I really have no idea how the custom shop comes into play. I would guess that can add several weeks to the overall process also.
