Motor plans....once more

Now that the trusty little 1500 hour 4.3 is burning a bit of oil on start up, I have decided that it is time to either get a new motor, or rebuild this one. I was thinking of a new 4.3 Vortec, 225 hp over my 175, but thats around 2200$ plus shipping. So I figure we can go up to michigan, and rebuild it with my step-grandpa. I was sure to tell my dad that you cannot re-use heads or pistons from the original motor, and that when rebuilding it is a lot wiser to bump up the compression ratio to 9.5:1. So I will be on the prowl for some .030 over 350sbc pistons at the 9.5:1 cr, NEW Vortec heads and intake, 4V carb, not sure on what size? new drive impellor, maybe a crossover tube, new valve covers, thru-hull :D

Does anyone have a good hp estimate?

What does it cost to overbore .030" a V6 4.3? (350-2 cylinders)

What size carb? 262.2cid, 5000max

Any other little things that might add a few ponies?

And does anyone know of any of these for sale cheap?

What size prop on a 1.84? Now it is 175hp, 14x19 stainless to 5k.

Thanks,
Tommy

Hey Hyper

Why not just put in a 350? I bet it wouldn't cost much if anything more than building a V6.

Hey Tommy

Don't forget to tell your dad that you need a new "air filter cover" you know the kind that has all the belts and makes that whirrrring sound.

I think it's a great idea to rebuild an engine at your age. My first car I bought, I had to do a major overhaul.......bearings, rings, etc. I know he was real proud sitting in the house with my uncle while I was under the car installing bearings. You will learn a lot about what makes the engine work if you have had one completely apart. You will learn things that you will never forget. I can remember like it was yesterday, and that was 31 years ago.

If it is only smoking at start up, it is most likely the valve guide seals. They can be replaced without pulling the head. Keep in mind you can buy a LOT of oil for $2200.

The GM 350 is around 2800, then I need new exhaust, that will be a good 3500$, plus the fact the boat dosent handle as good and gets worse gas mileage (Didnt that last comment sound a bit queer?)

Buying new I could get those parts for under 1,600$, can keep same exhaust, same mounts, same flywheel, etc.

I figure that will be cheaper, a bit more of a sleeper, V6 will have good gas mileage, etc.
