25" Pitch
Has anyone used a 25" Pitch prop on there 24' outlaw with a 454 mag. I was wondering what is your top speed and rpm.
Thanks |
In its stock condition, I would think that is too much prop in my opinion....Now if you cut the diameter down slightly and lab finish it, it would be a good match.
What are your rpms now with which prop. If I had to guess I would say a 23" pitch would be perfect for your boat and would net about 4700-4800 rpms. The 454 Mag max wot rpm range is 4600-5000rpms, BTW. |
My rpm is 5100.

I am running a mirage 25p with just over 500hp on my 24 outlaw. I am seeing 4600rpm and about 70.5mph with 3 people and about 75 gallons of fuel.

Thanks OG,
That's why I'm thinking that a 454 Mag would have a hard time with a 25 prop. Also, are you turning a 1.36 gearset...That's what I'm estimating with your speeds and rpms. |

OG, have you thought about spinning it harder? You are probably leaving some TQ on the table......
Mine walked around a lot with a 25. Best prop I found was a 23 Rev4. Best handle and best top end, believe it or not. Try a 4 blade and get the ass end out of the water a little, they seem to like the extra lift, and it sure helps the handle, espcially in the rough. Good luck...:) |
When the engine was done we threw the 25p on it and have not messed with it due to lack of time. Tyler Crockett (The Engine Builder) set the rev limiter at 5300 or 5400 in the msd box.
My number one project now is getting it propped right. It is a 1.5 gear. I agree that some torque is getting lost. Any input would be helpful. I have a good relationship with Throttle-Up Props in Sarasota (They sponsor our F2 Team). I gave her the numbers and am going to fax Julie the dyno sheet. OG:cool: |
The more I look at the current prop, It looks like it has been tweaked, it was one that was laying around at the shop and no one knows any history on it. Tyler also gave me a 27p but it was so out of balance that It wasn't worth trying (I didn't think it would work regardless:rolleyes: )
OG:cool: |
Thanks for the info OG, but with a 1.5 gearset, how are you managing 70.5mph at 4600rpms with a 25P...That would calculate to about 2.9% slip...
Your numbers make more sense if it were a 27P prop at about 10% slip(more reasonable)...I think it's a 27. |
Daze - I think the current prop "25p" probably has been worked. Also the speeds are off of the speedo which is probably off by a few. I would really like to gain the extra 700 or 800 rpms and some more top end.

Gotcha!!
A little bit of this and a little of that...adds up in the end. ;) Thanks!! |
We tested props on the 24 Outlaw last night. We are running with a 454. Right now we have a 23p-3 blade-high rpms, too high for me.
Let me see if I can remember all of the details of our testing. First we tested a 24p-4blade-came out of the water very nice-handles real well-58.4mph-low rpm 4800 Second we tested a 25p-4blade-took FOREVER to get out of the water-55.2mph-5000rpm Last was a 26p-4blade-lab finished-took a while to get out of the water-handles good but not as good as the 24-59.8mph-5000rpm. I could be wrong on these. This was the first time I have ever tested props. Mike Gorden was the one running the show. I am sure he has the right details. GAWD I need to start writing this stuff down to remember. We like the 24 because of the way it came out of the water and the way it handled and the low rpm BUT it is just NOT fast enough for my blood. I am sure Mike will have more props for us to test soon. |
Hi everyone, I running a 23p Mirage Plus lab finished by CHP. Runs 5100 rpms at about 61 mph although it has a lot of slipage at lower speeds unless I put the trim down.

Hi RHICKOFF,
Using your numbers, 23P prop, engine turning 5100 at 61mph, that yields 17.5% slip....That seems incredibly high... Two things, either your tachometer is off and you're not turning 5100 or you're turning a smaller prop. Any ideas?? Typically, turning a 23 pitch prop at 5100rpms should net upper 60's... |
Nick,
I have three props. The Mirage Plus (labbed) 23p at 5100 rpm and 61 mph. A Bravo I 23p at around 5100 rpm and 59 mph. And a Bravo I 21p at 5200 rpm and 57 mph. All are accurate to GPS. Any other idea's? Rick |
Hey OG, try a 22 or 24 Bravo 4 blade or a 21 or 23 Merc Rev 4. Both are 4 blades, see how you like them.
I was fastest with a 4 blade, It just improved the stern lift so much that is picked up speed and the attitdue improved trememdously. I wound up going with a labbed 23rev4. A good lifting 4 blade is my suggestion to anyone running 500+ hp in a 24.... Good luck:) |
Allan,
refresh my memory:crazy: :D How much HP are you running:confused: OG:cool: |
She's close...

We ran it up to 55.2 at around 5300RPM's and we turned around so we didn't wast time with that prop. The third prop was a 26p Spinnelli 4-blad that I recently traded from another board member that has been lab finished, but not sure by whom. It is also a smaller diameter than the 26p Bravo prop. My question would be, has anyone compared a 22p Hydromotive Q-IV to a 24p Bravo 4-blade? Does the 24 Outlaw like the stern lift of the Hydromotives? By the way, Thanks to Ron & Carrie for letting me play with props and burn their gas. Thanks guys, I love a good boat ride. :p |
