HYD. STEERING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:D :D Yup....I kinda made mention of it on my last post. You need to have some sort of Hydro steering on that rig, if you don't already. These 24's take alot of abuse in the gimbal and if you are running 650+ hp without steering 2 things are happening.

1. Your drive is probably flapping around like Birdog at an all male revue strip club:D, which also means you will have a hard time "driving" it out of any chine walking that may occur (as a matter of fact, that flopping drive will make the boat dance around quite a bit)

2. You ar taking a HUGE risk. If something should break in the gimbal or steering assembly (which is under alot of strain with these huals), you are going for a swim. Atleast get a dual ram hydro assist. PM Alfster on this board, or call him @ 513-407-0215. He makes steering systems that are very good and very well priced.

Post results so we know how it is going.

Good luck, have fun, be safe (I sound like my Mom :D )

How hard is it to move the whole drive up an inch or two?

Pretty difficult, comparatively speaking. The engine has to be remounted along with the whole housing.
Adjusting lower units is a whole lot easier.

What Daze said!! I did it the hard (and irreversable) way. Filled in the transom and re-cut the hole. Raised the engine mounts too. Works fine, but was a lot of work.

How would I go about adjusting the lower unit?

CigDaze 06-27-2003 07:25 AM

It's simply a matter of replacing it with another one.

You can buy 1, 2 and 3" shorty's for different x-dimensions, or buy the shortest(3") one you can find and adjust with spacers of various sizes.

So basically I have to buy an Alpha SS.

Allan4 06-27-2003 02:03 PM

Yes, if you currently have a stadard alpha......
