How fast is a 24 outlaw?
My brother is looking at a 1998 or 99 24 outlaw with a 454 310 horse. How fast are these hulls? How about with a 454 Mag or 502 Mag? How much power does it take to push it to 80 or so? Any input would be great. Thanks Greg
|
A 24 with a 310hp 454 will be at best in the upper 50's. A 385hp 454MAG should see low 60's and a 502MAG might make her go in the upper 60's. 80 is going to take some serious horsepower.
Allan4 might chime in here...He's got a 24 running some big hp. It's not a particularly fast hull, but is very stable and will deliver a superior ride compared to most boats in its size. |
I had a 1998 that came with a 7.4 (310HP). Once the engine was broken in I made one WOT run. Only say 55 on the speedo. It was so depressing I never made another WOT run the rest of the year. That winter I put in a 502. Saw 66-67 on the speedo with the 502. Never checked it with GPS
|
I'm running with approx 550 hp and my best is 75 mph. Gonna take well into 600 plus horsepower to hit 80.
|
I had 1995 24' outlaw with 502 mag would run 66 on gps. 98 is the last year they made the 24' outlaw nice boat you will like it.
|
I had a 97 SST 502 mag, cmi's , ecu, k&n, it ran 66.4 gps
|
My friend has a 93 24 454 mag carb,23" mirage and he ran 63.5 on a stalker gun.

HPJUNKIE....I sent you a response PM
Yup....right on guys, I think you are all accurate. You will need about 650hp and tq to get 81 or 82ish... They just are not that fast of a hull and have a very low X. They hit "the wall" in the low 80's. They can be a little tricky to drive in the 70's at times also, especiallly aired out. ALL OF YOU NEED STEERING IF YOU ARE RUNNING OVER 60MPH!!!!! My sugestion anyway. E-mail or pm me and I will shoot you some prices. In order to run fast you need the proper safety stuff. Why do you think ALL race boats have hydro steering?? I can beat all other popular makes in price, have equal-to-superior equipment, and will give OSO members a discount. 520hp gets me about 72-73 ish....empty...VERY empty. I can get about 68-69 if I am lucky in a race setup (ballast, fuel, passenger) etc...That ballast really scrubs off speed. Works out well though...P5 is 69mph and under, so I am within the calss rules. But....with a good tq motor, I have also seen 68-69 with 5 people in 1-2 chop. Key is stern lift.... Hope this helps. I am serious about the steering. Yes, I do sell the systems, but I had one on my boat long before I started selling them. Have fun, be safe A4:) |
that hull isn't known for speed...... no pad, but they ride great! I rode in one once with 700+ hp scary as he!!.
|
My 1998 24Outlaw (310 HP) would top out at 56 GPS with a 19P Mirage (labbed). Great boat.
Bruce... |
I have a 95 with a 454 mag efi that I rebuilt, new cam, exhaust, valves, etc. approximately 450 hp. I get 68 on gps.
|
I HAVE A 93 24 OUTLAW 502MAG 21MIRAGE 62.4 GPS. IT IS ALSO FOR SALE. SEE IT ON THIS FORUM. HAS BEEN TOTALLY REDONE
|
my 88 has 600hpat 5050rpm tq 620at5050 and I'm not happy , 74 mph with 50 to75 gallons of gas I raced p5 last yr I 'm going to try a2'' or 3'' shortie this winter buy one hope to break 80 then at 5400 rpm 625 hp tq 597

A-time...
I was thinking about trying that also. May try one this fall, I will post results. I'd like more power, but by running P5 I am not going to add power. It is set up just right as it is.... |

Hey Allan,
tried a 21 Rev 4 on my 24 Outlaw. What a difference, ran great, may need a 23 labbed. You were 100 % correct on the Rev 4 though. Tried all kinds of props & that seems to work best. I also replaced my cracked CMI headers with new & that probably also helped. Thanks John:) |
Great news Johno, glad it helped.
I would love to try that 21rev4. If you are comfy with sending it up here for a few days, I would LOVE to try it out. I labbed my 23 and picked up little or no speed or revs. I really need to get a shot at a 21 to see what happens. I think it would help me pick up a little mph....maybe 1ish or 2ish at max. I will load you up with freebie stuff if I can borrow that prop!!:D :D If not, it's okay, I understand, just thought I would ask. How many rev's are you pulling with the 21? What Power? Thanks, glad I could help. A4:) |
Allan
I am going out this weekend, 5 people & full tank with gear. I will really check it out better & have more info. I was just really pumped the last time I posted as I have have had real bad luck getting this motor combo sorted. Hopefully my luck will change:)
I plan on buying a 23 & getting Throttle up to Lab it for me. I will check RPM Sat, the mid range is awesome & and the boat pulls hard. Coming onto a plane is almost instant. Maybe a Bravo 22" 4 blade may also work?? That Rev has been the best I have tried. Motor is a HP 500 .30 over with Merlin intake 800 Holley, 139731 Crane cam+- 530 HP I guess?? I can ship it up to you, just let me play a little & we can compare results. John |
Hey Johno, I bet you are a little less thatn 530hp, but that is a nice package you have. Very close to what I am running....same cam and ci's. You probably have over 550ftlbstq, that is why the midrage pull is killer. Mine pulls really hard....it actually pushes you into the seat.....even the big power guys like the accel of that boat and motor.
Sure man...take your time....it's your prop!!hahaha We will be done for the season in about 4-5 weeks, so if we can't get together by then, that is fine, maybe we can do something for the spring. Have fun, let me know how it goes and thanks for the offer. A4:) |

I have a 97 24ft Outlaw I run an Hp 500 Carb engine with a 731 cam, merlin intake, gold roller rockers, Imco exhaust. runs a 23P mirage plus reworked to a 24p runs 73 mph on GPS at 5250 rpms. Spent 30 hours blueprinting the hull and it lists to port, does yours????I have to drop the port side tab 2 bars lower to run flat and it chine walks above 65mph like a big dog. It does have latham steering...any thoughts??? |
ALLEN 4 hey I run a 4 blade 26 bravo and had run a 25 mirage which I just sold, when I raise the drive 2'' . it will be 4 or 5 blades only if they make a rev 25p I would think that would be the prop?

You, as well, have comparible power to me. Yes, mine does list if the drive is tucked all the way in, but trimmed out it runs level. If I need to keep the drive tucked, I will run a bit more tab on the port, as you are doing. I'm glad too see you have steering on that thing. Safety first. It's not wise to run that fast without some sort of hydro assist steering, atleast. Hydro assit or full hydro steering will REALLY help chine walking, especially with a dated boat that has worn steering components, in addition to the increase in safety you achieve. Mine walks around alot with a 3 blade prop. I hate to sound like a broken record, but try to dig up a Merc Revolution 4 and see what results you get. Mine liked that much better than a Bravo 4 blade of any size. Faster as well with 575 ft lbs of tq. It walks a little, but not much. The steering really helps that. AIRTIME, yes, I would think that a 25rev4 or even bigger wouldbe great, but the problem is that I beleive they only go to a 23p. A 28 Bravo would be a good choice also, as long as you can spin it, but that is a big wheel for a 24 with a deep X like these. I'd be interested to hear how the shortie goes, I have been thinking about that also. That would be my suggestion, or you could have a 23 Rev4 worked and see what you can get out of it as far as p increase. Darren from Houston Prop is on here, he would be able to answer that for you. Good luck guys....have fun and be safe. If anyone needs hydro steering prices, pm me, I can make you killer deals... Also, check out our website. www.hilsingermotorsports.com We will be selling the steering and other parts and accessories on the site in the coming weeks when it is completed. The message board is now up after a little.."snafoo".. hhahahahaha...like erasing the entire board...ooopssss.... Seeya folks, have fun!!:D :D |

I've been on my buddies 24 Outlaw with 1000hp and B-max drive running 95 mph. It's pretty hairy up at those speeds in that hull !!!
He has seen upper 90's, but still hasn't broke 100mph. He is putting a couple more horses in this winter to get him into the 100+ club. |

Allan4, Thanks for your input....Mine does start to level as it is trimed out but then it starts to chine walk. I am going to try a rev 4 prop and see what that does. Darrin did my last prop so i'll contact him.

Rev 4
I just got a Rev 4 23 to try, the 21" Rev 4 worked great this last weekend. 5 adults, full tank,2 big coolers plus the regular gear I pulled 5400rpm. So a 23' pitch with labbing shoud be perfect. The Bravo 1's work good but the Rev 4 better as it tends to lift the whole boat out of the water. She does list a little to port but not very much. I guess with all the torque thats normal. Overall I am very happy finally.

Johno....you are correct. The key to getting these 24's to run and drive better is to get the stern lift. The Rev4's provide that lift. If you want to run in snotty water, you need to get the boat leveled off and the stern up "on top" of the water. THey will drive pretty good with a good stern lift and some ballast or good fuel load...or both....They will run pretty good in the 70's in 2 or 3 chop if you get them setup correctly. I'll run that 24 vs any other 24 on the market in chop.....it's all about the setup.
Glad I could help guys...... Allan:) |
Baja 27 Who is Darrin?

Darrin
He is the guy at Houston Propeller

Thanks G

May be a little late for my input but what the heck. I got a 88 240 sport. same hull as the outlaw, with a 454 mag 330 horse. It hit 58.5 on gps with two poeple on board, including myself, and 25 gallons of gas. Running a 23 pitch mirage prop on a 1.50:1 bravo one drive. I definately want more speed. Just dont know if it is worth it to build up this boat or just wait till the next one. Lookin to move up to a 28 or 30 footer. Twins of course.

Originally posted by thisistank DUDE!!! A thousand ponies in a 24 Outlaw!!!  That is crazy!! I hit right under 80 in mine and it needs to be pretty smooth or the ride gets a bit scary! I would not want to do much over 80 in one. |
