24 Outlaw Question
Hey everyone!
This is my first post on this board. I would like some information on a 24' Outlaw I am looking at. It's a 1993 with a 502. Is there anything I should be looking out for on the Outlaws of this age? I am not real familiar with them but I have had friends with an H2X and a Baja 260. How will the ride compare to these other two boats? The majority of my boating is done on the Ohio River and an occasional trip to Kentucky Lake. Thanks! |
Welcome to the board!
I have a 1993 24 Outlaw but she has a 454 in her. I really have nothing to complain about with her. I bought her from a fellow board member who took really good care of her. Make sure you have someone check her out real good before you decide to take her home. Bajas are real good boats but if she was not taken care of she might not be the right boat for you. Soooo, what does she look it? |
How about looking at the bolster pulling out of the floor. They are only screw through 3/4" plywood. Also the rear engine hatches are almost always rotted out or rotted out around the screws. Lets not forget blisters on the bottom mostly under the bunks of the trailers or in the rear corners.
Good Luck |
I wish I could help but I can’t. I had a 1998 24 Outlaw for 3 years and had no problems at all. I would still have that 24 Outlaw except for Mrs. Outlaw. I married her in 1999 and she hated beyond belief having to get on her hand and knees to crawl into the cabin of the 24. That’s the only reason I have the 29 now. My 24 came with a 7.4 but I put a 502 in it after the first year. It ran about 67mph with a 23-3 blade. With the 7.4 it only ran about 57mph.

I have a 24 with a HP 500 around 530hp, great rough water boat for it's size. They just need a ton HP to make them run, mine runs in the low 70's. The H2X will be faster with same power but the Outlaw will run better in rough water due to the 24 deadrise. Both are great boats & I am happy with mine. We run offshore most of the time & for a 24 she runs well.
Good luck John |

I don't like h2x's because of low freeboard and no bolsters, and not near the ride or offshore look as a 24, I had a mint 97 sst 502 with cmi's, AZspeed computer and K&N ran 68 gps at 5,000 with a 23" mirage plus, here is a pic from travis

skoboat, this is proman i have a 93 24 outlaw. it is on this baja site. it is also on boats for sale. it has a 502 and does 64 gps 70 on speedo. i have raced alot of h2xs. calm water some have beat me but in the ruff you can wave good buy to them. not a whole lot of room and not as long at the front end.still a very nice and affordable boat. i just drove a friends 99 24 h2x a coulpe of weeks ago.very nice but a big difference when i got back in my boat. i like my outlaw a whole lot better. but that is just my opinion. take some time and check my ad out.

Hey Proman, It looks like the inside of the gelcoat is different color than the exterior. Is the exterior painted and the interior the original color of the gelcoat???
|
Hey Guys,
Thanks for all of the information! You gave me a lot of helpful things to look for and I appreciate it. The boat seems to be in good shape for a 1993 model. It needs to be cleaned up a little and the trailer seems to be a little rough. I has been a one owner boat and overall, I don't think it is bad. I think it will make a nice jump up for us from a 20' Rinker open bow. THANKS! |
The Outlaw is an offshore design, the H2X is not. Where on the Ohio do you plan to run? We are in Cincy. I have a 24 Outlaw, 1998 that runs low 70's. I like the boat very much.
It all depends what you want to run and what type of boating you do. Rhickoff is right...look for bolster bolts pulling out and rotted hatch cover. Also, leaking around the rub rail, stress cracks in the gel on the hull and where the bunks sit and look to be sure the floor is even and the fuel door (middle section of floor) is not higher or lower than the sides. Be sure all engine and related fluids are good. Chekc the play in the gimbal and in the factory steering system and see if it has any hydro steering assist system on it. That is always over looked and many people recomend this for boats over 60 or so. Safety factor, especially for a boat with 10 years on the factory cable steering system. All things you should look for on any boat, not just a 24 Outlaw. Good luck, they are good baots. They do need more power to move them but in all they can really handle the abuse and make a great little Offshore boat. |
I've been running an Outlaw for going on 10 years now, longer than anyone else here I'm sure. I like the hight freeboard, I don't feel like I'm going to fly out of the boat in rough water. I don't like having to sit down like you would in the H2X. The 260 is wider and has a much flatter bottom. MacDad260 on this board has one and I've ridden with him several times. The Outlaw rides a TON better than the 260.
The Outlaws may not be as fast as some boats of the same size, but being able to leave the throttle pinned to the dash when it gets choppy while others are pulling back on the stick is a lot more fun if you ask me!!! Now, I just need to put a new motor in mine so I can have fun again next season!! 'Foul |
actually the h2x is almost 2 feet shorter than the outlaw on running surface (h2x has intergal platform)
|
hey jason, check out the 32 on the fastboats****** web page classifieds.it looks pretty nice.:)
|
I checked it out, I will probably look at both but I think the one in Ohio is cleaner and has shorepower and fridge and monster gauges, the way the old swim platform holes were patched on the one on the other sight makes me wonder about other things, they are plugged with screws, I'm kinda scared of buying non stock power
|
Waterfoul,
Glad to see that things appear to be improving for you! |
I also owned an H2X for a time. Except for the sit-down seats, I liked it a lot.
Didn't ride as good as the Outlaw, but rode much better than a lot of boats I've been in, especially for a 21 deg. deadrise. More room in the cockpit in the H2X than in my Outlaw, but less room in the cabin. Put some power in the H2X and it goes pretty fast, if that's what you want. If you are in rough water a lot, I would vote Outlaw. |
Hey guys,
Sounds like the Outlaw will definantly ride better than the 24 and 260. I didn't think those boats rode bad so the wife should be really happy with this. The cuddy is a little small but it should be good enough to get our two kids out of the sun a while. The speeds you told me to expect should keep me happy for a while :>) I hope to look at the boat again this week and will keep an eye out for all the things things you pointed out. I did check for play in the steering and is seemed to be ok. The only thing I would add to it is hydrolic assist. The guy also said it has the 1.36 gears. Would that change much performance wise over the 1.50? Right now it is running a 21 Mirage prop. Would it be worth it to change to a 1.50? Allan4, we do most of our boating on the Ohio around Evansville, Indiana. |
I would not worry about the 1.36 gear. You can change props around and that will make up for the difference. I would ask the seller why he changed the gears though. Not something you see alot in a 24 Outlaw. In theory, it might help top end.
As for the steering, We are exclusive dealers for XS Performance Marine. They specialize in high end steering systems, both Full Hydro and Add-on Assist. I can beat the pants off other high end systems as far as price is concerned (WPM, IMCO, Latham, Marine Machine...etc). Very good stuff. I will be happy to help you with this decision, just let me know, I will help anyway I can. Go to this link to learn more about the systems and see pics. http://www.hilsingermotorsports.com/...hp?threadid=38 Thanks and good luck, bring that thing up to Cincy next season!! :D Allan:) |
SKOBOAT,
I have an 23' P Mirage Plus LABBED by Chad Hill Props. Also a pair of Rex Marine Exhaust Tips that would be a perfect fit for an 24' Outlaw. Both are in excellent condition and the exhaust tips are new in box. Anyone interested excepting offers. |
Hey Rhickoff, What do you have to get for the tips? Do they have internal flappers? Do you know if they are a direct bolt up to the factory Corsa holes?
|
The Rex Marine Exhaust Tips have blowout proof stainless flappers. You will need to have the exhaust rubber tubing to go from the tips to your corsa exhaust. Cost new were $150.00
|
skoboat, my 93 outlaw also has 1:36 gears. i dont know why but i am also running a 21 3 blade and the boat works the best with that prop. i bought a high dollar lab 23 and it made the boat slower at top end and a slug out of the hole. stay with the 21 you will get the best results.
|
Proman,
That's strange. I had two baja Outlaws both ran best with a 23" P prop. In fact a 23" P comes standard on the 24' Outlaw. Also I ran a 21" P with a 454 mag. it ran to high in rpm. When I switched to the labbed prop I had a gain of 2 mph. Which went from a top speed of 63 mph gps to 65 mph on gps. Anyway, if you buy my prop and don't see any positive results I'll take the prop back and give a full refund. |
RICKOFF, DID YOUR BOAT HAVE A 1:36 RATIO? IF IT DID THAN YOU GOT DIFFERENT RESULTS THAN ME, BUT IF YOU HAD THE 1:50 RATIO IT IS PROBABLY RIGHT ON THE MONEY WITH THE LABED 23. I AM JUST GUESSING, BUT YOU PROBABLY DID NOT HAVE A 1:36 RATIO.

Props
Try a Rev 4 prop, Allan 4 runs this prop as well. I tried everything out there & the Rev 4 lifts the boat up & out of the water. I had the best overall results with these props.
Happy Holidays:) |
You are absolutely right Johno.
I run a 23 Rev4 and it is BY FAR the best prop for my boat. Beleive it or not it is the best out of the hole, best midrange, best handling (by far) and also the best top end. It's like I hit the lotto....well, okay, not even close, but you get the idea. I would like to try a 21 Rev4 sometime as well.... The key to getting the 24 Outlaw to run is get the tail end out of the water, and the Rev4 gives it the proper stern lift. That prop and some ballast up front and this 24 will EAT UP rough water for a boat it's size. You have to et "on top" of the water for it to run thru the chop. Once you get it dialed in right, they can be alot of fun.:D |
