towing info 29 outlaw
 

I just bought a 04 29 outlaw twin 496mags w/triple axel trailer. Heres the low down. I have a 99 ford expedtion 5.4, heavy duty towing and cooling pk. and load leveling suspension 2wd. Iam under no illusions about this set up. I do 85 % of my boating at the lake where i keep the boat stored which is 5 min from the ramp. my main concern is 3-5 times a year i tow 3-6hrs to other lakes. can i get away with this. If not i have a friend who has a heavyduty f250 diesel who can help here. can the expo. tow any distance at all? will i even be able to get up the ramp? I can buy a new tow vehicle if i have to but wanted to wait till next year before doing so. Any info here would be much appreciated. thanks

Check the owners manual for the gross tow weight. I would not exceed what it says, by much. The highway tow should be no problem, it's start and stop traffic that will work on it.

You are probably OK from what I have seen.

It will pull it and it will handle OK, just be extra careful to allow added distance for stopping.

Make sure your trailer brakes are in good condition also.

If you decide to upgrade a 3/4 ton will be the way to go.

I am basing the above statement on a friend that pulled a 35 Fountain with a 1/2 ton Chevy Sub.

I have seen a Baja 38 Special pulled with a vehicle JUST like you have, but the guy only did it once! He could not stop it!

The truck brakes were not strong enough to activate the trailers brakes. (13,000 Lbs) :eek: :eek:

I towed for one year with a Ram 1500 5.9. No problem.

unfortunately, i had to tow my 2000 342, which i purchased in florida with my 02 dodge 1500 4x4 until its lease ended. this truck is rated for 7200 lbs which was okay for our 272, but the 342 is close to 10500. never had a problem towing, launching etc. even from florida. like everyone has said, make sure your trailer brakes are working, and take your time. acceleration and breaking are a lot slower than usual. fortunately, new ctd dodge is on order....

He is always right in the middle of anything happening on Norman!

I think I can help you with your question. I have a 1999 29' Outlaw with a triple axle trailer and tow it with a 1999 Ford Expedition 5.4. I tow the boat at least every weekend about 20 miles. I also tow the boat on some long trips during the summer upwards of 8-9 hours.

Like everyone else said, make sure you anticipate your stops, and make sure your trailer brakes are in good working order. The truck has no problem hauling the boat aside from stopping. It will pull the boat out of the water on a steep ramp no problem. The only thing I would recommend would be to get air bags in the rear. Otherwise, I would save your money and use your Expedition for towing.

NEW29ol, I had the same truck and pulled my 25 outlaw around no problem, I know the 29 weight's more but my buddy used my truck all the time to pull his 30' scarab and same thing (no problem) you just have to remember its back there and give plenty of room to stop.

you will not have any problems with the tow rig you talk about, just listen to the above about slow stops ect.
I still tow my 29 outlaw on a steel triple axle trailer[twin 454's] with my chevy 1500 ext cab 4x4 , the only problem is on steep boat ramps when you pull the boat out it will spin the back tires[ have to put it in 4 wheel drive] have fun with the new boat

Just be aware, a 29 full of gas and on the trailer will weigh around 9,000lbs. Mine crossed the scales earlier this year at 9,400 lbs full of fuel, trailer, and gear. Stopping distance is the key. Make sure your hitch is rated for somewhere close to that.

whee do you get airbags for rear end? how much are they? Is it similar to load leveling suspension?

I got rear air bags for my Tahoe from Summit. Makes a big difference. I pulled a Formula 311 which is bigger than a 29 Outlaw, you need to have good trailer brakes to assit in stopping. I also upgraded to tires with a load range D rating. The stiffer side walls eliminates the truck from swaying on the softer, better riding, stock tires.

have a friend that pulls his 33 ol to Poker Runs 3 hours away. He's never had a problem with his Expedition.
I have an F150 SC 5.4 pulling my 25 OL and the only thing I would like to change is the brakes as well.
Keep an eye out for the idiots.

I had a 97 Expo with load-leveling. Yes, it is the same as air bags. I only pulled a heavy trailer once (16 flat bed with wooden floor and a full-size sedan on it, all covered with 1/4" of ice from freezing rain. I have no idea how much that weighed, or where it was distributed, but it was a lot.)

The Expo "chine walked" the entire time. I now know the rear air bags shared their air, and when one side of the truck dipped, the air rushed to the other, then came rushing back, etc. Pulling the empty trailer the truck did great. Engine is fine. Brakes arn't bad. Wheel base is a little short.

Miss the expo. It was a snap to drive in the city and in parking garages.
