29 Outlaw
 

A friend is look at some 29 Outlaws, how does a single engine vs. twin compare? The ride, power maintanence, etc. I know they will be more expensive, but in general.

A single most likely, isn't going to run over 60 mph.

The only singles I've seen have been at LOTO.

People are buying those more for the ride than
the speed.

I've had 2 29's, one with twin 7.4's, and the
current with HP500's.

The ride is good.

The 7.4 boat ran aorund 65 mph, the 500 boat runs
low 80's.

My person opinion, I would look for at least 385's for
power, you then, usually get external steering and
k-planes.


At cruising speeds, the single will be working harder
that the twins.

Yes, the twins will burn more fuel, but it won't
be twice as much .

Yes, it does cost twice as much for the basic
maint. items, but were not talking a whole lot of $$$.

The twins also get the nod on docking maneuverabilty.

Exactly what was said above. The singles are very very slow. I have the 385 mpi's run low 70's w/ 24p 4 blades. Docking is a lot easier also.

slowride 388 Scott with the cig on the same dock as you guys down at LOTO had a 29 with a singe 502 in it before he got the cig, ask him, your dad should have his phone # I know your brother Ben does.

Anything over a 27 footer should have twins.

Not sure as I am looking at a 29 myself for the first time. Looking for the original owner of a clean '02 blk/red 29 with 496Mags in Chi, IL area who trades with GSC and boated on Lake Michigan. Please contact me at [email protected] if you read this. Thanks.

Hey guys: I'm BRAND new to the forum and am looking at 29 Outlaws as well. '02 model with twin 496MAGs, 375hp each. What can I expect performance wise? This is going to be a big change from my 22 Crownline with 502MAG. The former owner of this clean blk/red 29 in Chicago supposedly hangs out on this forum and now owns a 40 Outlaw that he takes to Lake Michigan. If you are that person, I'd love to talk with you. Here is my .o2 cents about the Superboat Y2k compared to a used Baja 29 Outlaw as I am currently looking at both!

29 Outlaw Pro's:
Wide Beam
Large Cockpit for the Family
Large Cabin for the family
detailed cockpit feautes: i.e. bolsters with built in grab rail. nice feature.
availibilty: Once finance goes through I can find one within a week to my likeing
twin engines: I like the fact if you loose an engine you still can make it back to the marina
#1 resale. If something goes sour with my finances I know I can sell it right away.

29 Outlaw Con's
heavy ass beeaaattcchh.
some stringer problems to watch out for.

Superboat Y2k Pro's
lighter than the Baja
less expensive than the Baja
John Coen will build the boat anyway you like, or I should say FX10! : )

Superboat Y2k Con's
Probably the number one reason: Takes too long to build. If I order one today I have to wait until the end of summer. In the northwest I only get May thru September to boat if that, so that wipes out a year of usage right there.
narrow beam could be a problem with fat chicks.....ooops, I mean big boned mother in laws
Cabin is tight. Best usage is for the stowage of gear, and an emergency crap.
Resale: The good news is that people that buy them keep them. So resale in case of a financial emergency is not proven and could present a problem if the market for the product is narrow.
I don't like the fact that the cabin door has to stay closed while running. If the kids are playing in the cabin I want to pop my head in and see what is going on. I don't want to lock them inside the cabin. Maybe Superboat should consider a sliding door as an option.

My overall thoughts:
I like both boats. If a Superboat was available for pick-up today I would consider it.
However, with my family in mind, and not my own personal wants, the wide beam, twin engines, good looks, resale, I am swayed towards the 29 Outlaw. I want my family to enjoy boating as much as I do.
With over 50+ available on the market at any one time, I am sure I can find the one I like within a week.
