Baja finally addressed the issue of the ongoing project with a press release. I've e-mailed them a few times requesting info and here it is:

That whole letter sounded like a way to back door out of the fact Baja has been saying all along they wouldnt step a boat!!

I like the stepped hull. I think it depends on where you boat. I'm on a river that for the most part is smooth. I like having the extra few MPH. I might reconsider if I was constantly plowing through 3-4' waves. Perhaps they will do what AT does...Offer both. They put out enough boats.

I hear what you're sayin' Tank...I can also see your point 29Fever. I'm just curious what is really going to come of this. I mean Baja is going to need to do a whole hell of a lot of back-peddling to get themselves out of this mess. I mean, I can go back the last 5 years of catalogues I have and in every single one, they made it very clear how important it was to them to offer the safest, True-V hulls. Now, they've turned 180* and are meddling in uncharted waters. Sure, I'm certain Baja and Douglas can and will come up with one fantastic design, but it's just intriguing to see this route. I'm still a believer and a fan of classic straight vee's.

fan of steped hulls or not, I'm glad that Baja is on the move to build faster boats. In my opinion the marine industry and technology is changing very fast and Baja is doing a good job staying out front as the best performance boat build.

I don't know that it really makes a difference to me either way, besides that it pleases me to see Baja trying to keep up with the times. Everything changes, including competition and customer demand. The second you become complacent, you are pretty much a sitting duck in the business world. I think Baja realizes this. If Baja ignores this they will only be making center console sport fishers five years from now and the value of our boats will hit hte **** hole. Of course, I don't think a stepped hull is going to help our case much, unless you find a real traditionalist to buy your boat.

In my opinion, anything faster is a good step, as long as the handling and realiability do not hit the skids. I have a Baja shirt the has the slogan "speed changes you" and my buddies laugh their asses off when I wear it!! Those bastards, but let's face it, they are great boats, I really like mine, but they are not the fastest boats around....but.....either are cigs, apaches.....etc. I guess it all depends what you want out of the boats. I'll shut up now......A4

I'm not totally against stepped hulls as long as they are safe....I think that argument will wage on for as long as stepped boats are made.....Though I dont feel gaining 5 MPH is that important. If you want a boat to go 5mph faster, supercharge it! get better exhaust, better parts, etc. etc. And it will go a hell of alot faster than 5 mph faster! :D ;)

My whole problem with Baja stepping a boat is that they have said for years that they would not do it. Now they are back peddling. I don't like that. But I do agree it would be cool (and a way for Baja to keep it's dignity) if they do decide to step boats to also keep the non stepped models. That way the costumer can decide what they want.
