How much do you guys pay for insurance?

And who is your carrier?
I dont have insurance on my boat yet and was
curious what it is going to cost me. I have
no foggy idea what it costs to insure this
thing?
Any clues?
Thanks
Jason
PS is it based on purchase price?
or something of the like?
Blue book value? ect?
Thanks
Jason

Jay - there are lots of threads out there on insurance - check the General Discussion Board.

Start with the "name" companies - Progressive, Allstate, Nationwide, etc. Also call BoatUS - a lot of people have insured their boats through them....

The rate is based upon numerous factors - experience, type of boat, deductible, replacement value, liability limits, geographic area, where you store the boat, where you keep the boat, etc., etc. It is difficult to say what the cost will be, but for comparison I have a 1995 Baja 272 Shooter insured with Allstate. My rates are approximately $750 per year, but I carry pretty high limits to protect my other assets (home, business, etc.).

AAA 800.00 a year, full coverage plus the 10g's in the stereo. ;) Of course I want be telling them about the "little" motor upgrade ;) ;)

1997 24 outlaw 502 mag sst state farm 480 a year

Allstate, just under 500/year for 1998, 26' Baja Mach1. $100 deductible. Have had excellent experience with Allstate. Had boat bump against dock and broke the plexiglass windscreen. Had me send in quote, sent me check. Never even came out to look at the boat. Just a couple questions that took about 5 minutes. Can't say enough good about the service they gave me. And I get to talk with a person, no automated voice systems....

Right at 1,700.00 a year with Allstate,36 outlaw.

My insurance company asked "how much is it worth?" and "how much do you want to insure it for?". I guess in case you owe more than it's worth, like when you take a beating on a trade in.
Of course your deductible affects the cost, and how much you want to insure the trailer for, and having your outdrives insured may be an option, so you have some variables.
I'm insured for $37,000 for $530 a year, $500 deductible. National Marine Underwriters.

jawbreakerkid 02-01-2002 12:18 PM

i pay $1,400.00 a year on a 2000 '33 Outlaw through Worldwide Marine.

Jay
Give sy a call at total dollar, also you get 10% discount if you are a NJPPC member.

Shooter 02-03-2002 10:26 AM

Sy wont's insure you unless the boat value is greater than 50K. I use Campisano for agreed value fo 35K for 1400.00. They also know about the blower. I'd advise you not to lie about the engine. You have a problem and they see that, you outta luck. 1994 Shooter 272 with 525hp. Living in 'Jersey, the land of sucking insurance!

$845. Boat U.S. And yes. They know everything. Insurance is there for a reason.

Sean :)

29Fever 02-06-2002 01:58 PM

1998 29' Fever 500HP. State Farm. $550 per year. Insured at $80k with a $500 deductable. Friend's '94 272 502MAG, also State Farm $400 per year.

It really depends on where you are. We boat on the Ohio River and from what I've heard the insurance is pretty cheap here in Cincy.

Jayl13 02-07-2002 08:15 AM

Hey Biggus Dikkus
What do you pay for yours?

CigDaze 02-07-2002 08:26 AM

Boat-U.S.
2001 25 Outlaw, 496MAG HO(425hp).
They also know everything! I carry moderately high coverage and I have an agreed hull value(replacement value, not depreciated value--very important!!!) of the full purchase price! = $1300/Year!

It's a lot more than most of you, but Our age kills us! I also like the peace of mind with Boat-U.S. I've seen them in action and they do a nice job with their claims!

Jayl13 02-07-2002 08:36 AM

What do you mean age
How old are you
im guessing your young from that statement

Great I thought that car insurance was bad under 25
let me guess i have to start all over again since im 31?
I hate insurance companies
and I dont have any blowers, turbo's or NOS or anything on my boat
Hell I think my starboard engine is trashed so i want some insurance for about 300-400 bucks
damn thing is not even that fast
Jason

Shooter 02-07-2002 09:34 AM

I think the biggest differnce in price, more than location, is agreed value versus depreciated. I'd be very cautious with other than agreed. You might be hurtin if something happens. My boat is at 35K agreed. I paid 30K and put 10-12K into it(easily). A new Baja 275 runs 80K for about the same. If I went with the NADA book - and they don't care about my pretty Gaffrig Gauges and stero, blower etc... I'd only see about 20K.

CigDaze 02-07-2002 09:48 AM

Yes, that's right shooter! There is a huge difference with Agreed value policies and non-A.V. policies! That's somthing you have to scrutinize very carefully when reading the fine print...Many non marine-dedicated ins. companies don't offer that or won't make it known until you file your claims.

And when I spoke with Sy Goldburg from this board once, he also mentioned that I boat in what is considered one of the more "troublesome" areas statistically, so we here in Central to South Florida pay a little more than inland or river boaters.

And yes, Jayl13, we(wife and I) are only 24...So until we hit that magic quatrer-century mark we are just too damn outright dangerous, wild and stupid with our vehicles and boats. Damn Insurance Companies!!

;) :D

Allan4 02-11-2002 07:42 PM

24 years old, damn, your balls haven't even dropped yet :D ;)

Jay-L, your name sounds like some punk, p-diddy gangsta rapper, booooyyyeeee.

HAHAHA, My insurance is thru a local company and I pay about 600/year with a 500 deductable. I think that is about what I pay anyhow. I thought you were going to pay some homeless guy $50 bucks to set the boat on fire a few months back. Better get 'er insured first, or you will end up like 29Fever, with 10 year old criminals playing on his boat all winter..... :D :D

29Fever 02-12-2002 03:24 PM

Where have you been Allan? I heard from Byron that you were trying to recruit a new hamster to spin the wheel in your engine compartment. :D You guys are going to make me Whipple the beak boat aren't you? :D I was down at the fire pit last weekend. My wife couldn't believe you still haven't waxed my ride! I explained to her that you were busy, but she spit on you boat anyway.
