Not sure if I am doing this right but OSO has added a video program on the 1977 Plymouth 160 race.

If you look closely, you will see 5 different banana boats (including the original 24' top banana!!) as well as an interview with my dad throughout the video.... Hope you enjoy it!

Re: Plymouth 160 Video

For this race, we had a magazine writer who wanted to come and see what offshore racing was all about. In the old days, I drove and throttled the boat and since this was a fairly simple course, we put him in the naviagator's slot.

At one point off Provincetown, we stuffed the bow and a wall of green water came rushing up the deck....my mechanic and I had been there before, so we just put our helmets down to break the wall of water and we rode it out. When we came out the other side, the third spot in the bolster was empty....I thought the writer had been washed out and over.

After looking for him in the water, we found that he had been pushed down under the bolster in the boat, and was rolling around the floor. I reached down and pulled his life jacket to get him up.

When he came up, we all started laughing as the goggles he was wearing had blown out and they were down around his neck and his beard was sticking out where the lense should have been.

We had to back off as the rain was heavy and stinging his eyes at speed.

The other reason we backed off, was that for this particular race, my heart was not in it. Just before the race, I had gotten word that my father had died back in Rhode Island....this wasn't one of my better memories.

Very cool video!

Actually was with some friends and brought the boat to Plymouth this past weekend. Beautiful harbor and lots of sand bars I'm told. Was relatively calm and was out off Provincetown in no time, but I have heard it can change very, very quickly there. Was great to see the video before we headed down there. Have not seen some of those faces in quite some time on Channel 5.
