Nice Reply - thanx
So from the tone of your reply you obviously think the boat is stolen ? Is this a common occurance with older boats ?
I'm sorry to say your reply is kind of intimidating. The person who sold it to me is of good character and advertised it in full public view on the internet, so I'm confident it was rightfully his. If you or anyone you know feels this is their boat please feel free to state your case here. Charlie, since you were the builder of this, I'm surprised you don't choose to be a little more helpful ? |

Since that was your very first post here on OSO and you start with that kind of information, it didn't exactly start you off on the best footing. Why don't you post some photos of the boat and maybe we can help you figure out who made the boat.....that is why I asked for a VIN number, that will determine quickly who the builder was and the year it was made. |
I was very curious about this thread as I never heard of a Banana Boat this big.
I checked the Banana Boat site for some info and history about the Banana boats to see if I had missed something. http://www.bananaboatco.com/ Well, you already have an answer. Are you 100% sure about the length? Cant be a cig can it? I believe Glastron have made some boats called Banana something. Dont know when they were built and what sizes? Otherwise im out of guesses. The VIN is important so you can verify what you have bought/own. Im sure you will get help if you post some more info. :) Pics of your boat would also be interesting to see. Hope it gets sorted out quickly. :) |
Boat Pic
Well, it looks like I could have been misimformed then....
it is definetly from that era and has certainly seen better days as you will see from this picture, hope this works..... http://http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...todog/boat.jpg |
underdog, why are you so quick to think the boat was stolen?
That's not the underlying tone i picked up from Charlie's post. Boat has nice lines, but the HIN# will surely ID this hull. I hope you can find it.(if its not on the upper rt corner of the transom) |
Wow, that thing is friggin cool looking!
Is that the old 38' Top Banana? |
BTW, regardless what it is, a pair of 425hp, 496s will work fine.

You may have a Coyote....and it would be a 38 not a 40.....what does the deck look like? And what is the VIN number on the top right of the transom.
Second thought....with the extra strake under there, you have a boat that was taken out of the MSV or Cobra mold. Like La Tortuga or Beep Beep. The original mold was 44 feet, but everyone blocked it to the length they wanted....if it measures 40, that's your answer. That hull design needs a lot of power to push it into the 80's and 90's, but if you just want to cruise around, moderate power would work. Nice looking boat......you did good!! |
more pics
Well, there is no vin. The previous owner had his employees sanding it during downtime at work and they took off all the exterior fixtures and no vin can be found.
Here is a pic of the deck and another from the back so you can see the dash and windscreen configuration. As you can see the stringers and floor need attention, but inside is already done and the engine bay/transom is good too. http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...g/IMGP1198.jpg http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...g/IMGP1200.jpg http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...g/IMGP1203.jpg |

That is a MSV boat.
It has the same deck as the old 44 footers had back in the day.....see boat # 83 below. MSV stood for....Sonny Miller....Bobby Saccenti....Jon Varese. They won the first ever Benihana race with La Tortuga. |
Wow ! Thanx for the help on identifying the brand. The previous owner was pretty sure it was a banana boat.
I'll ask him why he thought so but I think I remember him telling me his previous owner told him that. Do you think 500 hp would get her on plane and go 50 mph ? |

Msv
Nope, all I got was what you see and some exterior fittings, motor mounts, gas tanks. Cost......4K. This is a 2 or 3 year project for me because I work on ships and am away alot.
So I imagine somewhere along the line I'll learn more about powertrain choices and get one. I'd like to go modern but I don't think I can justify those kind of $ on such an old boat. I have a line on 2 chev marine 350's with mercruiser I/O..... |

I have a line on 2 chev marine 350's with mercruiser I/O..... This will be a long project and that is a good thing. Don't jump at motors now that will not be what you really want later. There will be plenty of time to find the right motors for that boat.....and in my humble opinion, they should not be 350 cu in....they should be big blocks to start. Make a list of what you need and start to ask around the different boards, get help just like you did here. Look in the classifieds and start to record what people are asking for what. You would be very surprised what is out there right now if you have the cash to make a deal. Motors can be the last thing you buy.....get everythng else squared away first. |
appreciate the advice
thanx guys, thats what i needed, i hate to spend money on the wrong stuff. so i'll just start on the stringers and hull
and with time......i'll get educated. |
I see everything got sorted out and that you got a really cool looking boat.
Congrats! As Charlie said, take your time to think about your boat and how you want it to develop. Ive had mine for a year now and the first idea was to run it with a small block. Today thats not valid anymore. Its going to have a big block instead. This is just one example of changes I have done. :) :) Make a detailed list for your self about how your MSV will be all that you want. Your dream boat. Engine, drive, steering, interior, tabs, gauges. You get the point, detailed list. :) Then you can start to calculate on the costs and see if you can make it or if you have to take a slightly different route. If you want help, thougts, ideas from others publish the list on here. There is a lot of experience out there with people that already has tryed the stuff you will list. Good luck with your project! |

underdog, Where are you located ? "HIGH LIFE"

get it covered up 1st either have a discount boat cover make you one out of the new polys 9.5oz is the new ones or look at a left over 40 or 42 baja one, theres a few at the baja forum here on oso, theres a parts place in the great lakes area thread if you go there you could get a heavy duty one for cheap money cause a green trap to cover that will be 100 bucks anyway and won't last, but you don;'t want rain to get in on your work area. good luck. [ tons of left over baja stuff] is the name of the thread you just hit the blue link and it will take you there theres pages of stuff you maybe able to use for the boat electric panels gauges ect good luck art
