Stolen Apache Mold Story!!!

2 Attachment(s)
As some of you may already know, my name is Charlie McCarthy Jr. – my dad is Charlie McCarthy who founded Banana Boat Co. and used to race a boat called “Top Banana” and “Rums of Puerto Rico” in the 70’s.

Long story short, when my dad sold the trucking business in 1995 and retired, he was toying with the idea of getting back in the boat building business but wanted to make larger boats. He went to see his old friend Bobby Saccenti in early 1997 and Bob sold him an old 38’6” Apache mold that had never been put into production. We had the mold at B&C Marine in Hollywood, FL for a couple of months but eventually had to move it to a storage area because of zoning changes etc. It was a difficult time for my dad and me as I had been working in the family trucking business since 1990 and after he sold it, I kind of wanted to do my own thing for a while. Now of course as some of you may know, we have recently “dusted off” some of the old banana molds and are planning to re-launch the company again for the 2006 model year.

Anyway the Apache mold was loaded upright onto a triple axle white/grey Target trailer and placed into a storage yard in Ft. Lauderdale. If anyone is familiar with Lauderdale, then they will remember the storage yard right at the junction of I-95 & I-595 – that’s where it last was in 1997. We have never seen it since.

I have been trying to keep this quiet for a while now – trying to locate it quietly – following every lead (one even led me to a landfill!) But now I figured I’d post a little info. on OSO in the hopes that someone might be able to help… I mean how can a 38’6” mold just disappear?

Here are a few photos & measurements. This hull pictured here came out of our mold but was shortened by approx. 2 ft by blocking the transom. This hull “plug” is what Apache used to produce the 36’ molds.

Please let me know if anybody out there knows anything. Does this boat look like anything being built out there at 38’6”??

Thanks!!

It has to be a coincidence but the bow pictures look just like my 386 Sonic. Any transom pictures?

The original Sonic was an evoloution of my own 38' Banana race boat "Top Banana" which then became Coyote then Sonic.....so we know for sure that this is not a Sonic.
There is a thread that covers this topic and gives the time line for this 38 foot design.

The big name boat companies are not using it for sure, we think that a smaller shop may have used it in the past or has it stored somewhere in the various caves of shops in Florida.

When it was stolen, it was on a triple axle Target trailer with the VIN number of 78TRT1294. We have all the documentation to prove ownership....maybe the trailer was parted out from the mold and is out there somewhere and could lead us back to the people who took the mold.

The whole reason my son put this info out there now, is to use whatever connections may be found on OSO to help with recovery of this theft.

I have one of the 41 molds but is not a original. Mine was built for Cigar boats in the late nineties by Jack Clark at Jaguar Catamarans. Let me know if there is anything I can do. If you need to give me a call sometime 770-231-6153.

Re: Stolen Apache Mold Story!!!

Just looked through some of my old notes regarding the theft.

The storage yard was told that the mold and trailer had been sold and the people were there to pick them up. As the storage charges were all paid and up to date, there was no reason to hold them.

The storage company told me that the guy who came with the truck for the pickup, was a guy called "Mike". This Mike drove a blue Porsche. He told him they were going to be using the mold to build a boat called "Mirror", or something like that, down in Miami.

The actual date they were taken was the first week of October of 1998

Re: Stolen Apache Mold Story!!!

Thanks to everbody on OSO for all the kind words and offers of help as usual!! This is a powerful website. Keep us in mind if you ever come across it - we'd be really grateful. I first wanted to keep it quiet as I didn't want someone else to learn that it was "misplaced" and acquire it for themselves...but what do we have to lose at this point?

The actual date that we learned of the theft was 10/12/98 - not 97 as I incorrectly stated earlier.

The latest wild goose chase I went on turned up the old 39' English Cougar deep-V molds...just before they supposedly met the crusher. I hope these don't belong to someone else out there like us...

Why did the storage place just let them take the mold and trailer without contacting you first? That's B.S. Maybe they had something to do with it? I hate theives

I agree. Releasing equipment without contacting the original renter is very suspect.

Have you asked for any compensation from the storage company, just out of curiosity ?

Re: Stolen Apache Mold Story!!!

as i recall todd cimmino from hawk marine (the dude who rippe doffa bunch of OSO members) had an apache mold. When i went on a seas trial of the 45' apache he was "brokering" we talked abtou his 41 molds and he had a very fishey story that nobody else had ever heard of (including the guys at apache).

to the best of my knowledge a new guy bought the name and the company. Todd got arrested and was being prosecuted for multiple counts of fraud and some other stuff. YOu migh tbe able to find somethign out i fyou contact the DA who was incharge of the case.

This was posted a long time ago on OSO.

Todd had Billy Dahls 47 mold, or claimed he was buying it, which has now been sold.

DirtyMoney 08-21-2005 07:45 PM

Re: Stolen Apache Mold Story!!!

I have the 41 and 21 mold Cimmino had and sold to www.boatmoldtrader.com this is not the 41 mold that is being referred to. The mold I have was the one pulled from the Team Apache boat and built by Jack Clark. Todd did also have the 47 mold but he and Bill never did complete the transaction which was to build Bill Dahl a 41 hull and deck as trade. The mold is at my shop here north of Atlanta waiting for funds and anyone is welcome to inspect it.

Does anyone know where the old 24' Carrera SS7M/Scorpion 24SS hull and deck molds wound up? I believe I saw an old OSO thread somewhere that mentions they were sold to someone in the Houston area. If anyone knows, what company has them now and what are they making from them?

Re: Stolen Apache Mold Story!!!

Charlie,

I don't how it would relate, but there is a blue "Mirage" at a dealership (Forgot the name) right at Griffin Rd. and 95. I spoke with the salesman and he indicated that the boat was built from the 41 Apache mold by Mirage. Actually, the boat looked more like a newer version that is a little more rounded at the fairing. I'll see if I can dig up a pic of the boat if it's of interest.
It's titled as a '04 w/ diesel power.

Bryan

Re: Stolen Apache Mold Story!!!

Im new to the forums, but that is really sad to hear about your mold.

That is pretty bad of the storage yard to just release it to whomever, they should have checked with you first.

I hope you find out who the s.o.b. was that did this to you and make them PAY!

as far as I know all the original Carrera molds were passed on to the new owners of Carrera who now build the open fisherman versions.
Even if they dont have them the new owners know the original owner (Humberto Picon) so I am sure a call to them would get you your answer.
