Another thread on being sold a junk outdrive and screwed

I purchased a bravo 1 outdrive back in June 27,after a total of 2 - 3 hours the upper blew , it's been in a shop and they tell me it's junk it didn't run out of fluid because the gears aren't scorched . The drive had regular power in front of it . There are no serial number on it anywhere to even identify it as mercruiser or a gear ratio, which leads the mechanic to believe its after market , anyway the drive is junk and must have been built improperly,

Here's the facts bought on eBay on June 27 ,1600 $
Outdrive shows up month later after many excuses as to why it ain't shipped yet
I put out drive on boat 2-3 hours of use its junk , thing looked brand new
My guess is he blew it once with that big blower motor he has in his eliminator rebuilt it wrong and sold it to me
Outdrive went to the shop for about 3 weeks where mechanic tells me the gears are in pieces

I've got the guys phone # no response yet
eBay and PayPal working on it
I found the guys Facebook page and that's where I see the big blower motor , well you do the math
Anyway I'm not a dick just not gonna let this one go
I can almost guarantee klaus from tacoma is on this website
And of course I would ship back or love to work out a deal -feel my pain

"There are no serial number on it anywhere to even identify it as mercruiser or a gear ratio, which leads the mechanic to believe its after market"

If your mechanic cannot identify the drive I'd suggest finding another mechanic. Working on a drive without knowing what it is is not a good practice.

Look I bought a drive described as like new it's broken after 2-3 hrs and worthless , the thread ain't about serial numbers or mechanics but thanks for the input bro

Post a pic of the boat and motor… Most people know boats not names around here

Unlimited jd 10-01-2014 12:12 PM

What kind of drive is it? What kind of boat did you put it on? No one makes a bravo upper in the aftermarket (not a direct copy that is) so I'm hoping your not talking about an alpha? What shop has it now?

Sick Stinger 10-01-2014 12:23 PM

It's a bravo boat that I know.

chewymalone 10-01-2014 12:44 PM

Not enough info to determine if you got screwed or not... depends on how it was represented in the ebay listing and what (if any) communication you had with the seller prior to bidding.

Matjluk 10-01-2014 12:53 PM

It's a bravo 1 ,boat is old formula with 350 hp,better question would be what would cause a bravo 1 that looks brand spanking new ( on the outside ) to end up destroyed on the inside ? I suspected it ran out of fluid and siezed but the unit was still full , the mechanic said there was metal everywhere .
Just to be clear I'm not trying to start #+\= because in all honesty this guy wins and there really isn't any thing I can do about it unless the guy has a conscience , it's more of a heads up .

Best part is that eBay can't do anything about it because its been over a month since purchase which wouldn't have mattered because it took over a month to get anyway

Matjluk 10-01-2014 12:56 PM

Screwed ?? I paid for a drive that worked for 3 hours .

chewymalone 10-01-2014 01:42 PM

Every drive I've ever blown looked perfect on the outside before it broke. The ones that broke without driving the upper gears through the top cap even looked perfect externally after breaking. I'm not trying to bust your balls at all, but if I were purchasing a used drive I would have a list of questions... 1) What is the year, model #, serial # of the drive? 2) How many hours on it total? 3) Has it ever been rebuilt? If so, how many hours since the build and who did the work? 4) What kind of power and hull has it been run behind? 5) What kind of gear lube do you run in it and how often do you change it?

I can tell you that a drive that looks OK externally and even internally to the untrained eye can turn into a mess of scrap metal in seconds after a small impact with something in the water or a part failure. Point is, maybe the guy didn't know the drive had issues, maybe it didn't have issues when you got it, or maybe the signs of impending doom were there but you didn't ask the right questions. Whatever the case, I know it sucks and hope you have better luck next time.

I can show you 2 drives right now that look 2 weeks old. They have 600 hours on them from a fishing charter boat just since may.

Like I said advertised as great condition , lasted 3 hours
How is this any different than a Johnny boatman drive ?

Well, much like you when you received them and installed them, maybe he thought they were in great condition.
You said yourself that they looked good from the outside and, without tearing them apart, how would one know?

Well I would expect the one selling it would know because that's how it was advertised .
I believe the listing said 30 hrs ,
How much should a drive that lasts 3 hrs cost ?

hullofjustis 10-01-2014 04:12 PM

wow do you have any record of correspondence asking him where the drive is.after a week. i would go after ebay and paypal on that as well that you did not recieve the part stating you did not get the drive for a month. generally when a serial number is not there, it has been stolen and ground off.
what happened to your drive. i would not have waited a month for a drive to show up in the middle of the season

Serial numbers are just stickers on drives

Mr Gadgets 10-01-2014 04:32 PM

Typically when you replace an uppercase it won't have a serial number on it, unless somebody transfers the serial number from the old the case. if it's built from parts from scratch, typically it won't have a serial number.
EBay's garantee has a lot of small print. Keep talking with ebay there maybe a loop hole that will help????

Any pics of the damage?

hullofjustis 10-01-2014 04:43 PM

They are stamped as well. every bravo i have seen has number stamped in it somewhere

I'm going to pick the drive up this weekend I will post pics
As for eBay they told me that a dispute has to be filed within a month of the end of auction, and since i received it after a month I should have filed a dispute after it didn't show up on the estimated arrival date which was like a week , take note of that people .

I still believe the drive was put together wrong by the seller after a rebuild

Mr Gadgets 10-01-2014 06:10 PM

Shoot me a PM when you post the pics, I would like to see what they found..

Thanks
Dick

Did you pay via Paypal utilizing a credit card? If so, you can dispute the payment with the cc company even though it's been well over a month. If they agree with your side, Paypal will have to provide a refund.
