Location of boat name on cat
I understand that the name must be visible, with the port of call located directly under the name. On a cat, the transom dips pretty low in the water. If the name isn't visible while underway, due to a rooster-tail or because the boat isn't yet on plane, is that a violation? Must the sheriff be able to read the name prior to stopping you? Once stopped, the name would be pretty visible , even with the low transom.
What have others done on a documented off-shore boat? |
if your cat is throwing a rooster tail, the sherriff ain't catching you anyway.

I don't KNOW but I can't imagine any Reg Agency being upset with you so long as they can read it when you are stopped. Plenty of boats are hard to read when at speed regardless of whether there is a rooster tail or not.
Not to mention that they are also going to want to pop the engine cover and see the DOC #'s which I KNOW they can't read at speed...!!! |
Mine are there in the middle between the 2 outboards and you can't really see it unless right behind you. I have only been approached 1 time( I was just leaving a gas dock at idle) about it and it was cause they just thought i wasn't displaying numbers. Once stopped and explained and they saw, no problems other than they asked to see required safety equipment, etc.
At any speed above 30mph i'm sure it's unreadable but I don't worry about it. :) |
The only thing the CG states is that the lettering has to be 4" tall.
It can be on your transom or hull sides. I have a problem that there is not 4" of even semi flat space on the back. I know mine isn't a cat but CG doesn't care. |
Been stopped several times for safety insp and the lack of a name and port of call never even came up. I have the properly mounted reg numbers on the bow and thats it from PA. I'm never out in the ocean so maybe thats the diff? What, now I have to come up with a name?

boat name&port of call is only required if you are coast guard documented,if state regestered, issued numbers twards bow is all you need, plus reg sticker.
|
yeah... this is why I live in canada... boating is much simpler up here!!! lic #s in 4" up near bow and your ready to rock!! and amen to the big rooster!! :daz:
