Comforting to know I'm not alone, hearing loss and BCC removals! (49). A big challenge for me is figuring out how to protect my head, its so hot here and I have a very sensisitve scalp-if I wear a cap or any kind of hat I break out in heat rashes and it is very uncomfortable. I try to stay under the bimini now but have to put it down underway. Anyone had this issue?

ezstriper 08-14-2018 05:51 AM

tuff deal here, had several removed in last few years, nothing bad so far, but my wife does have a bad spot that she has surgery on sept 4, guess would have known be lots of us in the same boat...good luck to all dealing, the ones that have not have issues, see dermotoligist regularly

Sunblock is a must when being out on the boat.

Pismo10 08-09-2019 05:23 AM

Just remember sunscreen stop sunburns but not cancers from developing.

Living up in Canada where we cover up for 6 months of the year and still see a dermatologist every 6 months and have spots burned off each time.So far no more major sports that need to be removed. Thank god for our health system all has been covered.

I just tried a long sleeve sun shirt for the first time last weekend out on the water. Those things are great. Lightweight, wicks moisture, and blocks the sun to the equivalent of over SPF 50 according to my UV meter. No sunscreen needed for skin covered by the sun shirt.

I just had a "pre-cancerous" suspect removed on my arm and the wifes all freaked out about it  I told her that im still gonna be on the sun no matter what...its in my blood. But i did start wearing those SPF50 PFG shirts as well.......be aware that the shirts are not 100% blocking. SPF 50 only means they block 98% of the suns UVB rays..And an SPF 100 would do 99%........there is still stuff hitting your skin. I wore the shirt just this past Aug when we were down in FL for the entire week...thought i would have tan lines from it....nope still got a tan just didnt get anywhere near as dark as i used to in the past :) they do help but are not the be all end all for protection....just FYI :)

Wildman_grafix 10-11-2023 10:36 AM

Living here in FL we use the shirts and sunscreen. It's funny at the sand bar you know who are the locals and who is visiting, we all have shirts on and huge flopping hats,,,,,, the visitors will not have anything other then swim suits.

Because we`re warming up our bones from the cold.:D
When it`s hot how do you wear a longsleeve shirt? Gotta even hotter . We don`t have thin blood like you locals , I get extremely hot.
Today it`s 38* , feels like a hot wave, I`m down to a sweatshirt .
I go to Florida it feels like Im in a Fu king OVEN set on Broil!!!! No way I`m wearing a shirt much less a long sleeve.

Pismo10 01-25-2024 05:16 PM

New treatment/preventative for skin cancers is the HPV vaccine. Very new research.

Yea I get it, I grew up in Northern Indiana.

Funny how after 13 years I get cold when its mid 60’s!

On the shirts, the sun is so intense that its cooler with the shirt on.

When I saw this thread pop back up and I hadn't seen any posts by him for a while, I just checked when he was last on too. Last on OSO 7-01-2020.

Anybody know him personally???

Dan,

I'm right there with ya. But....

There are some really cool materials out there nowadays, and they are making "sun shirts" that I'm told are actually cooler than bare skin in direct sunlight.

Thanks. Brad.

Spent years in the sun in Australia and have had a plethora of small skin cancers removed/lasered/cauterized. Now living in a stinking hot climate all year round, when boating or golfing, most people wear long sleeve shirts or stretchy ‘sleeves’ on their arms.

I hated the idea of long sleeves but the materials used don’t make me feel hotter. Manufacturers claim they actually keep you cooler, but that’s debatable. Long sleeves for me on the golf course, boating, and sometimes, even swimming.

I wish my family had protected me as a kid (we didn’t know better then) because that’s when most of the damage was done. It’s too late now. I see a dermatologist every 6 months and have new spots treated and try to protect myself to prevent things from getting worse.

Different skin types have different resistance to sun damage but most of us will never know until it’s too late.

Never stop enjoying life, but make educated decisions, especially the decisions you make for your young kids.

Yes we didn't know, I used to lay out on a black tar roof and use Hawaiian tropic "OIL", no SPF at all.

Used to be mistaken for well,,,,,,,, had a nick name because of my skin tone.

Long sleeve is actually cooler than wearing short sleeve/shirtless. Next time you are in Florida look at the lawn crews/tree guys/golf course workers and you will notice they are all covered up. Even lifeguards will wear long sleeve shirts. I definitely own more long sleeve shirts than I do short sleeves

I was in Wyoming over the weekend and it was 30's, Denver was 60 Sunday and S Florida is 60 today.. Temps are odd for late January
