24 Carrera with 496HO?

Hi there!

It seems like a white 24' carrera is heading overseas to sweden any day now...:drink:

Just bought a 24' Carrera and I will install a 496HO, what kind of speed would you guys guess I will see?
Also, what prop would be a good first one to try?

Im new to the carrera boats so any input is welcome!

Thanks! /Fredrik, Sweden

I'm not sure 425hp is enough to break into the 70's, low to mid 60's I would think

(you bought the white one for sale in Miami? )
when new back in the 80s a Carrera 24 with a run of the mill 330/454/TRS would hit low to mid 60s on the radar gun depending on drive height and setup.
Hell there were actually a few cheapo (no cabin/no options) 260/350/Alphas built and they ran darn near 60mph (57-59)..
with 425hp/Bravo I would think it would run low 70s setup correctly
Best rough water 24' hull ever built, congrats!

Hi Freddan, long time..

First I like to say congrats :) I really like these 24x7 boats.
The hull is pretty much the same as the 24 Pantera hull.
But does it have the padded keel?
If the numbers is MPH one of the 24 Panteras in Sweden
run +66mph on a 400hp 454ci. My prev 24 Pantera -99 with a 454/365hp hit 63mph.

Don't be shy, talk 24x7 on boatsite.se, some of the guys there have some knowledge ;)

Yes, I bought it without power. Im not exactly sure what power he had. I got the boat for a fair price I think, alot cheaper than what he asked for.

Starting to tear down the transom - rotten.
Stringers in engine compartment - rotten.
Electrical system - installing completely new system.

And so on... Well, the boat is 25 years old so I had it coming.

A question for you guys who runs carrera 24's with big block;
Were you able to fit the engine and still keep the rear seat?
I think I will have to rebuild the rear seat into stand-up bolsters to fit the 496HO.

freddan 12-31-2009 04:04 AM

... forgot to mention... The wooden frame of the front seat bolsters were totally rotten... New frames will be made.

freddan 01-09-2010 04:10 PM

Started to rebuild the transom with resin today so things are moving along really nicely.

Hey! Were are you carrera guys? :drink:

Yes but it is tight.
All 24x7s (Carrera,Pantera,Pythyon,Jaws,Superboat,etc)
Have the same tight cockipit but they all have rear seats with big block.

Thanks for the reply!
Does anyone have a picture of the engine compartment and the rear seat?
The 496 is shaped like a square box and Im really concerned that I will have to rebuild the rear seat. I think the height will cause some problems.

Remember that all carrera's are not created equal, Depends on the x-dimension even when using the same engine package. Also that boat originally came with a trs drive, trs trans, bbc. So I believe the engine was sitting further forward compared to a bravo one which will leave more room for what you want. 496dimensions are length 35",width 33",height 24". I also know it is a one piece hatch with seat. P.S almost bought the boat, bought another same color, year, also without power. :boat:

Exactly, its a one piece hatch. WeŽre also thinking of a sollution of separating the hatch from the rear seat but weŽll see what happens.
I will actually have the engine in 2 days and then I will be able to measure exactly. I bought the engine from Cobra Power in Fl.

I wish I could upload some picture for you guys to see, when I tore down the transom I found traces of the first TRS setup. The transom had ALOT of old holes in it that I had to fix.
I also had to sand down the gelcoat on the transom hull and found layers of old paintjobs. Seems like the boat was all red from the beginning, then painted dark blue.
The wierd thing is that the previous owner seems to have run the boat without trimtabs? I will definately drive the boat with trimtabs.

Highvoltage, what boat did you buy? Do you have pictures of it?

Thanks for the pictures Stormrider!:drink: Looks awesome!

Those frontseats looks just like the ones I have for my boat.
Im currently rebuilding the wooden frames for them.
