1997 Checkmate 283

I saw a 1997 Checkmate 283 with a 454mag EFI for sale. Can anyone give me some details on this boat. Weight, speed, overall length with and without platform. How do they ride compared to the 253 or 259. thanks

CONVINCOR 300 08-01-2002 11:23 AM

The 283 is 27'11" (29'8" w/platform)... about 5,300 lbs w/single..it should run low 60's w/the 454MPI...and will run much better in ruff water compared to the 259/253.

Checkmate283 08-01-2002 11:36 AM

If i put a procharger on the 454MAG could i get high 70's?

HiPerf2000 08-01-2002 12:57 PM

My buddy has a 96 with a 540 and 250 B&M....i think it puts out 650+ hp. He runs low to mid 70's, and may see mid/upper70's depending on air temp and conditions.

Well a deposit will be on the 283 tomorrow. Just working some minor details out. Its 454mag efi has 200hours so I hope I can get low 60's on GPS or my friends will be walking bye.....not for long! Any other comments

Thanks for your help guys....one last question. This boat is in Georgia and has no numbers on it. Not sure if it was ever registered. Since I live in NJ and will register it in NJ how will the sales tax work. Someone told me I would pay sales tax in Georgia at time of purchase and then in NJ again when I go to DMV to register. Is this true??

CheckmateF1 08-16-2002 12:24 PM

You shouldn't have to pay any sales tax until your register it in NJ.

I am leaving Monday morning from NJ to go to Georgia to pick it up. Can't wait!!

Good Luck!

Let us know how it goes!

Checkmate283 08-23-2002 09:20 AM

I just a read a report with a 300 Convincor with twin 454mags. It weighed in at 5600lbs. I was told 5300 with a single. Only 300 lbs less for a single engine.....i dont beleive it! I would imagine about 1200lbs more for extra drive and motor......Anybody?

Give us a update did you get the boat any photos.

Checkmate283 08-29-2002 09:28 AM

I got the boat and am very happy with it. It was a lot bigger than expected! Going through the registration process. I dont think it will be registered for Labor Day weekend....:( The dealer forgot to give me some paperwork that DMV needs to register. Not a big deal b/c the weather doesn't look that good. Here are a couple pictures.....

Wow..... that's a nice ride ;)

Checkmate283 08-29-2002 03:58 PM

hi-perf-2000.....how did you enter that pic? I tried clicking on IMG button and entering the .jpg address and it didn't work!

Is that a 253 or 283?

Checkmate283 08-29-2002 04:22 PM

Here are the results from the test ride.
1997 283
454Mag efi 240hours.
22 Bravo 4 blade
4 adults 200+lbs each
100 gallons of fuel(3/4 tank)

4600rpms at 59.6 gps

The motor should be at 5000rpms. Did all this weight kill my rpms? I haven't run the boat with a lighter setup yet so I can't tell if the rpms will increase. Any ideas? thinking about labbing prop, high flow flame arrestor, gill exhaust etc. Maybe a procharger but doubt it.

slapshot 08-30-2002 09:28 AM

Links work now, nice ride. I'm looking to step up to something in the same size range. I know that it's new to you, but how's the ride quality been?

Checkmate283 08-30-2002 10:09 AM

I went from a 1999 ZT240 to the 283. I only took it for a test drive on Lake Lanier, GA. It was 9am in the morning and it was a sheet of glass on the water. Its a much bigger boat than mine and some 253/259 i have been on. From what i hear they ride much better than 253/259 in rough water. They are slower b/c they weigh 5300lbs dry and with a 130 gallon fuel tank plus people you can add 1500lbs more! I will give everyone an update on the performance/ride next week when the registration is complete. Its sitting on the rack at the marina waiting to be run

Mate 229 08-30-2002 08:01 PM

You should consider a Procharger if you are looknig for reliable performance. I have a 27 Fountain 502 mag efi with a procharger and Stainless Marine exhaust. If you stay with a stage 1 no more than 5 lbs boost you will be safe with a mag motor. Too many people get crazy with the boost and then complain about superchargers.
Your boat looks great good luck and safe boating.

checkmate283,

My boat is a 97 253. I have yet to see another with the same color scheme....until yours. Nice boat!

The 283 is much bigger than the 253. It rides nicer also....just takes a bit of HP to get them moving.

To post the pic you need to save it to your hard drive, then click the browse button (in the attach file section near the bottom), and browse to where you saved it, then select it from there.

Good luck with the boat.

Congrats on the new ride.Looks sweet.
