Joined the Checkmate team !

Well after selling my 22' Scarab two months ago I finally pulled the trigger on a new ride. Got a great deal on a 1994 283 Convincer. Boat is mint and wasn't on the market but lucky for me I heard about it from a friend that knew of it sitting in a barn where the gentleman collected boats, cars etc..

Twin 525sc's
Bravo One drives
Stelling extension boxes - raised
Lathem steering
New gauges
New controls
K-planes
5 blade props
nose cones

Interior and exterior is all original and in great shape, only flaw was the checkmate decal was rough so I replaced it with the new style decal. Gonna have the windshield tinted next week with stereo and some trailer upgrades to follow. I wasn't looking for a Checkmate or even a boat with twins but after seeing 82 on the gps my first trip out I'm very excited!

Looking forward to getting more seat time, anything over 77-78 gets alittle squirly

Should have bought a cat. I sure love mine. 35 years of owning V's. I was overdue.

Congrats! That sounds like one heck of a Check! Once you get that dialed in it should run real good.

Sounds awesome, can't wait to see the pics.

MINK 07-17-2014 09:46 AM

can anyone post pics if I email them over?

Running 24p 5 blade props, Ill likely leave the setup alone this year and learn to drive it..I dont think 84-86 will be an issue as it sits but with some prop changes I'd like to get in the high 80s!

Boat pulls like a beast, main issue is stability after 75...thats where I need to get more seat time in!

diesel30 07-18-2014 09:34 AM

i can't wait till i come around that thing next year. lol. see you out there this weekend.

What an absolutely beautiful and unique Checkmate !!

MINK 07-19-2014 08:34 AM

Thank you!

ezstriper 07-19-2014 08:57 AM

neat boat...these boats very sensitive to water conditions at speed...have a 253 that runs over 80, that boat should run over 90 with all the planets aligned, you might try a pair of 4 blade good props and see what that does for handling...thats a lot of power and weight in the stern for a 28....interesting what you can get out of it...looks like was a factory set up with the dished engine hatch...never heard of one with that power...good luck Rob

90 would make me VERY happy, looking forward to getting the boat out next weekend.

Drives have the 1.36 gear and props are 24p ...boat comes out of the hole super easy, I will be changing the props up to find some top end eventually.

There was one other twin 525sc 283 Convincor boat discussed on the Checkmate site aa couple years ago. I think it was black. That is a very unique boat and 525sc engines are very good. They do love 92+ fuel though. Mine runs best on Shell 93. My friend tested some and it had less ethanol in it than the other brands .

Edit. I found a thread on this boat or the exact twin on Checkmate-boats.

What and where do I need to search? I just became a member over there last week..

I searched twin 283. It was on page 3 of the search results.

I posted the boats forsale ad last summer on CM forum.

BUP 07-22-2014 07:36 PM

Really nice CM . I will say it looks stern heavy as another poster said the same. I will have to agree SC big blocks and extension boxes on a 28 footer would be really stern heavy.

In the pics it looks stern deep / drafts a lot of water. The extension boxes on the boat also moved the center of gravity and the center of balance even further aft (back) especially on shorter boats. No offense, I really like the boat. Maybe some bigger trim tabs might settle it down at the higher speeds and props as well.

Also keep your eye on water reversion especially just sitting in the water - engine off. I only say this because possible stern is drafting too deep in the water.

Congrats on the new ride!

JUPITER PULSARE 07-25-2014 12:12 PM

Any speed updates on your new ride?

82mph seems to be it.

Spent the past weekend at Cumberland and with 4 people, 100gal of fuel and all my overnight anchor stuff saw 81 on the gps leaving the Raftup - Boat is much more stable now that I'm getting some seat time. Intercoolers and some prop changes are in store for next year.

Keytime 08-15-2014 11:18 AM

That's a sweet set-up! That boat has to be a blast to drive.

Checkmates are drivers' boats. Get the hang of it and you'll be fine. I run my 283 on LOTO and it's always been predictable. Tuck the drives in and tab down when it gets rough and there will be no surprises. It's a fun hull. ;)
