CHRIS CAT SPEED, are they that slow???
Someone here bought a project boat I looked at 3 years ago. 1987 chris cat 31 with stern drive.
He ran it this summer, converted to 3 x 2.5 outboard. You know what? He's only running 76 mph, with a guesstimate of 150$ / hour at roughly 45-50 mph... Man I can hardly believe this! Do you guys think this is normal? are they gas eater that much? |
What prop pitch, ratio, and rpm?
The IOs can be hard to initially set up which can cause a lot of slippage. Guessing the OBs are not different. |
The 30 Chris Cat race boats were running over 100 back in the mid 80's with triple 2.4's.
|
I dont know much about the outboards, but my 1985 Chris consistantly runs past 115gps with 736hp 509's gm heads etc. Not to mention it handles rough well, with old school SSM III drives and big shafts, we had a great summer and finished the Lake Cumberland Poker Run without a hitch. Most boats we have ran with are well over $50k more and we have just as much fun!!!:D

can you post a picture of your boat? always curious to see these cats!

What is the other boat in the pictures besides the cat? looks like same name!
also: if I would not have my formula If I could insure this type of boat here... I'd buy it! Nice boat! |
Thanks Jeff,
The boat beside it is a Stinger. These pictures are from the gentleman who i purchased the boat from in October. I haven't even put the boat in the water yet. As i said, I hate to get rid of it but I found my dream property on the water and i have to sacrifice the boat for now. |
Oh yeah, my insurance... I pay $63.00 per month through State Farm. If you know anyone looking for this type of boat, please pass on. I have the port motor out now at the machine shop getting turned .40 over, heads being rebuilt, the blower was just sent off to The Blower Shop for rebuid, carb just went out for rebuild, etc. I am trying to get the boat into the 100's. I was just keep going ahead with the motors and adjust the price as time goes on. Nice boat you have..

I was never sure if it was black duck or not. The new name was black steel and it had a similar paint scheme on it, I just figured that it was the old black duck race boat. thanks. If you are refering to the accident in Key West. the boat had minimal damage a couple of big prop gouges in the deck and a small ding in the side from the breakwall. No stress marks or really anything bad. The shadows were tough boats.

The Black steel boat came from Champion marine big auction. A couple of guys from chicago raced it in Key west in '95 or '96. The boat had motor problems(3 o/b's) on the 1st lap and was going too slow around the breakwall by the viewing area. Zero Defect(laith Phaeron) ran them over while battling with Alcone. The driver was hurt pretty bad(has since recovered) and it happened in front of a bunch of spectators. The boat was beached there till the races were over. Back then pro outboard raced w/ modifed classes and the speed difference between the two classes was alot. It will probally come up for sale on oso soon with Two nice 2.5's on the back of it now.runs good and it is a nice shadow cat. jay.

It was Black Shadow NOT Black Steel....
|
Your probally right on the name. It is hard to remember all the boats that were restored.
|
It definitely was "Black Shadow". I was racing in my Chris-Cat at the time ("Euromarine Special"), and that was definitely a bit unnerving. "Zero Defect" was an open or super boat, not a modified, so the speed disparities were significant. It was definitely not a good idea to run those classes together. I still maintain, however, that it was up to the overtaking boat (Zero Defect) to pass safely. They always tell you in the drivers meeting that rules of the road apply, but you would be amazed how few guys racing have any idea as to what the rules of the road actually are! Anyway, glad he recovered. I have photos of the boat that my friend took and you could see the marks on the foredeck where Zero Defect's props walked right up the deck. Very scary!

I was actually standing on the breakwall and saw the accident right in front of me. The driver jim finkel took the hit from the skeg of zero defect in the back of his helmet an open faced bell. The 'd' rings were streched to about 3" in length. I thought the worst for him but glad he recovered. I think a guy named Frank martin?(?) retrieved the helmet from the water floating, where it had been torn off his head by the impact. It was a horrible accident . Thanks for refreshing my memory,it has been a while since this happened, but I do remember euromarine. If anyone has pics, can you post them, thanks jay.

I want a shadow/chris cat, please PM with any ones for sale. Been looking for a while. thanks.
I have the original (Shadow Cat) brochure since I work at the marina they were built at in Lake Hopatcong (elbie's place). My avatar is my boat parked at Hockenjos. |
